285 70 R17 BFG KO2s With Load Range “C”?

Moving from 275 E to 285 C

Not sure if it's been discussed but has anyone gone from the 275 E to the 285 C? Not sure what to expect as far as MPG change since the 285 C is lighter weight. I expect acceleration to slow but would almost make sense moving from 275 E to 285 C would improve MPG?

Found a set of 285 load C complete take offs from a JLUR for 700$

Mounting them tomorrow, interested to see how they compare to the 265 wildpeaks I have now

Did they include the wheels for that price too?? If you so made off very well as Im sure you could easily resell them.

Considering the new Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT's but going back and forth with the C load KO2s. 55 lbs for the Coopers, about 4 lbs heavier than the KO2's C load. Mainly considering the Coopers for better wet traction and the new XLT's have an aggressive sidewall as opposed to the old AT3's. Cooper AT3 XLTs not made in C load so that is the dilemma. BGF KO2 or AT3 XLT. Here is a link from the Tundra forum.

I put a pair of C 285/70/17s on last week. Love them.

I will second this, I have been running a set of Jeep take offs for a couple months and they are far and above an improvement over my Load Range D KM2s- a bit obvious I know but I did not realize how loud my KM2s had gotten

There are plenty of good tire options out there and I don't swear by BFG products but have been plenty satisfied always keeping in mind the limitations of the tire I am buying.

Maybe it’s just me, but seeing the Cooper actually mounted doesn’t impress me. The look is better than it used to be for sure, but the KO2 wins in appearance hands-down...and I’m not a BFG fanboy by any means.

I'll agree on the looks. But it is better than before and wet handling is pretty important to me considering most of my driving is on pavement.

Discount Tire has the KO2 C load but not in RWL. I may be able to get them to special order it as BF Goodrich site does say it is available.

I certainly don't swear my allegiance to BFG either. I think people need to manage their own expectations when buying A/T tires and plan accordingly for how they will use them.

Like you said, there are plenty of good options out there. Too many folks here are looking for a unicorn.

I went from 265 KO2's to the 285 Cooper AT3 XLT and there is no competition, AT3's are so much better. Balance easy, quieter and ride better on the road, and after taking it to Moab no worse than the KO2 although I still need more time to test it off-road. Took Top of the World in the rain and it didn't slip one bit. I will never go back to the KO2. In terms of harshness, I haven't noticed a great difference between my C-rated KO2 and E-rated AT3's after 5000 miles. For what its worth I think it looks like a nice tire too. If the only thing that matters in a tire is appearance then sure go for the KO2. If actual performance matters then get the AT3.

Thanks, that helps!

Interesting, I'm sort of torn between these and KO2's for 285/70/17. The cooper AT3 XLT are about 5 lbs heavier....do you notice much in the way of diminished braking compared to the KO2's due to the additional weight? I'm intrigued now that you say there is no difference in ride quality, the AT3 XLT being a E-rated tired. I'm not sure if the XLT's have a 3 ply sidewall like the KO2's....which maybe explains the little difference in ride quality with KO2's (in terms of rough ride). I currently have 265 KO2's (C)

Well I went from the 265 KO2 in C load range, like yours, so it's not exactly a direct nor fair comparison. I believe the 265 KO2's are 45 lbs vs 56 lbs in the 285 AT3 XLT. The Coopers are 2-ply sidewall and the KO2's are 3-ply. I have noticed it's heavier to brake, acceleration is decreased as well, and I took a 1 MPG hit. All of that is to be expected going to a larger tire with more rolling resistance along with the additional weight on all 4 (5 if you count the spare). But again that's not exactly a fair comparison.

If you are talking about the difference between a 285 AT3 XLT (e-rated) vs 285 BFG KO2 (c-rated) then I doubt there is much. You are still going to have to pay the penalty by going up to a much larger tire with more rolling resistance. Any benefit you gain from it being c-rated and 5 lbs lighter is negated by that fact that the KO2's are louder, are more difficult to balance, have worse road manners, and worse wet/snow/ice traction. They are also about $25-$50 more expensive per tire as well. I got the AT3 XLT for $203 ea and got a $70 gift card.

I think there is a bit of a misconception around everyone needing E load tires. As someone that ran 34" E loads for years and switched all the way back to a 32 inch C load, I would say unless you are running like a race truck or doing rock crawling a C load tire is plenty. I will say I never had a flat on E load but I have never had a flat on C load either.

I guess it is a matter of debate on whether an E load 2 ply tire will actually protect the sidewall as good as a C load 3 ply tire.

Seems like I remember reading you can air down an E load tire more for 4x4 roads for better traction but not sure.

I do agree an E load is overkill if you are not planning on towing anything.

It would be nice if the AT3 XLT did come in C load.

i did exactly that and got +2mpg! even feels like it has more torque... could just be me

Old post, but wanted to share. I also got 2+ mpg better mileage going from BFG KO2 275/70r17 E-rated to KO2 285/70r17 C-Rated. Does “seem” to accelerate / stop slower, but not too much. Still working on PSI, but think 40 might be the spot. 37 rides nice, but more road noise and doesn’t roll as easy.

40psi front/38 rear seems to be the sweet spot for these tires. That’s in stock form without additional weight added.
