285’s on a 2016 4Runner Trail - Fender Liner Mod

Does anyone know why the TRD Alloy Wheel Trim Kits are discontinued? The part number is PTR25-89150. I know they are expensive and something you can pretty much put together on your own but I like that they had templates so you couldn't go wrong.

I used cross cutting pliers. It's what Toyota was using at the port when they were doing this mod. You clip across about 1/4 deep at a time till you get to your mark. After that, sand your cut smooth with foam sanding block. These cutting pliers really keep you from going too much, too fast and screwing your trim job up.

Dremel here, can saw off a bit and then sand it to smooth out...

Honestly, a heat gun and fresh box knife do the best job. You can make a cleaner cut, just take your time with it.

Does anyone have an update on rubbing while off-road (suspension travel extremes)?

Just wondering if further trimming/mods were needed after taking the vehicle off road?

Huh, I didn't even know this was a thing until I saw Jason's video. I did the 285 KO2's on the stock rims on my 2016 trail premium and mine rub a little on the liner in front of the tire when I'm backing up and turning sharply. I think the spacers Jason is using definitely add to the rubbing. I'm not using spacers. Will be doing the lift someday, but this little fix sounds too easy not to do and be rub free.

Would stock 17" TRD Pro Wheels with 1.25" Spidertrax spacers be the same as a 17" aftermarket wheel with 8.25" width in terms of rubbing ? I believe the stock TRD Pro wheels are 7" width so I added 1.25" as a example.

Planning to do a 2.25"/2" spacer lift. And want to run 285/70/17 on a TRD Pro vehicle.

Hmm. I misread OME as OEM so I thought you had stock setup. I just picked up some 285 duratracs and I have a bone stock 2018 off-road. I plan to just put a leveling spacer kit up front. If I do this fender mod, should I be able to fit the 285s?

Its an easy mistake to make: OME vs OEM.

I have a 2016 Trail Premium and they work with a little modification. I'm not sure if the 2018 is the same. I would chance it if I had your 4runner, but I don't mind trimming the front bumper and removing the mud flaps. You might. I guess the only way to be completely sure is to wait for some other 2018 owner to do it or get your tire shop to mount up one and try it on the front before you buy it.

TRD PRO wheels are only 7” wide (no idea why they did this) but they are 4mm offset vs 14mm for other OEM wheels so they stick out a tiny bit more.

I just ordered 1” BORA spacers for my pro wheels. Thought 1.25” Spidertrax would be a little too much.

Fender trim for 285/70

Great write up and the pictures really help.
Now I know what I'm in for with my 2&1/2" ICON lift in front ad 2" lift in back, new ICON 17x8.5", 0 offset wheels and 285/70R17 tires. I'll be doing this in a couple of weeks too.
I think the wheel spacers contribute to the problem. You're increasing the scrub radius, right?

Did this today. It really does take about 20 minutes. My fronts were rubbing only on backing up and turned hard. But it would rub on backing out of a parking space. Really annoying for me. My fronts were rubbing both on the mud flaps and the front liners. So I removed the mud flaps and moved the liners up about 1/2" or so. I did trim the bumper slightly with a sharp pocket knife, but I'm not sure that was necessary. I wanted to get this done in one shot and not have to keep getting down there and trimming. I didn't bother sanding either. Its not a part that anyone will see.

I don't have spacers so my rubbing was probably much less that Jason experienced.

I'm glad I got the 285/70 tires. This mod was so simple and the problem is resolved.

Anyway, thanks again to the OP in posting this mod and then mentioning it on a video. I didn't know it even existed until he did that.

Did this over the weekend. Simple quick mod.
3" toytec lift here with 1.25" spacers. Was not rubbing before spacers.

I would only rub in reverse.

Wanted to say thanks for this!

I just had the toytec boss performance put on with 1.25" spacers and my 275/70r17's still rubbed up front on full lock. I have a liiited model, but the application still applies.

Great write up. I'm sitting in the tire shop now waiting for the 285/70-17s. I actually think the spacers contributed to the problem. The wheel articulates around the spindle. The farther the wheel extends from the spindle, the larger the arc (articulation). So I don't know if I needed to do the mod, but will know soon enough.
