3rd Gen Hood Scoop Removal & Restoration Tutorial (pic heavy)

Hmm any pics of what that goes, can you post a pic after you do it ? I'm assuming some 3m foam tape would do same thing, but just leave the backing on it.

I think I have all the parts for the hood but not this. Is there something else that can be used instead of this? Would be cool to see a pic that shows this.

Yeah, that's where I'm struggling too. I can understand what the other pads do, but I can't figure out what contact this "protector" protects against.

I'd be nice to see an installed pic. If I figure it out, I'll certainly post mine.

Ok, lol, I thought it was just me. And what's the function of these things? I love how sometimes some parts aren't needed, but need to know if these are a must. Getting painted this week.

Well the four pads are where the scoop contacts the hood, as I show with the green arrows below:



But the function of the long piece is not clear to me yet.

The pads keep the scoop from rubbing against the hood surface.
I thought of purchasing the Toyota pads, used 3M double sided tape, not foam tape, just regular double sided and left the red cover on the side to the paint.
It is the same thickness as yota pads I removed or little thicker considering they were 17 yr old. Worked perfect

Mine's white, so I had the scoop painted white as well. Here it is soon after the hood came back from paint.

Lookin good!! For sure paint scoop to color match body.
I didn't care for black mesh insert of scoop.
So I chemically stripped mesh insert, under black paint is nice stainless steel
that goes well with Millenium Silver.

Success, I got the last pad on, thanks for the help! It was a bit annoying, since the pad, even though brand new from the dealer, must have sat around on some shelf for a decade or two, so the adhesive has dried up. I had to use some additional adhesive to get it to stick to the scoop.

So for anyone coming across this thread in the future, here is the complete parts list you need, and some more photos to show you where the small parts go (the ones in the front, like the bulge, plate, and guide, are pretty obvious so I won't show them).

Finally:

Thanks for all the tips. There are actually indentations on the bottom of the the scoop showing WHERE to stick those tabs too. I don't know if anyone mentioned this, or if maybe my scoop is a newer version where they added these indents on the underside.

Now if I'm really picky, I'll order a new Emission Label Part #11298-62440 $7.93 and Vacuum Diagram Part #17792-62190, the stickers that go on the underside of the hood, as you can't remove the old stickers and re-use

I guess *I* am also really picky . You think anyone (other than folks here) will know that Toyota didn't make sport hoods for '97 models, which is what the sticker is for?

Thanks. Well, all hoods have those stickers, so I figured I'd put them back on. I don't have the hood liner, and am not buying one, It's $200 (prob make engine run a little hotter) and I think is only for noise, but mine is super quiet up front anyway. Your donor hood prob had it already there.

Yup, mine came with the insulator, though I had to do some restoration work on it to get it to look decent. My old hood didn't have an insulator, and I don't see any difference in temps or noise, seems about the same.

Cool. Maybe it's there to keep underside of hood from looking dirty? Not sure, but I had my guy do the underside of the hood with a shiny clear coat to keep the grime off.

Stickers when you order them are take usually a week to come in as they are printed somewhere else, then shipped.
