awesome touch with the nexus tablet, i know t mobile has a prepaid data plan with 5 gb's a month for 30$ if you didn't want to tether it to your cellphone if people were interested in getting the 3g version of the nexus 7 which is 350$ i think? you would still need a signal processor with usb input to hook it up to your amps. Cadence Sound CEQ777 4-Band EQ w/ 7v Line Driver - Showtime Car Audio its only a matter of time before a fully featured android head unit is available i would think tho

For reference I have seen number for those Scion HU indicating a S/N of about 45 db.

My Alpine is around 102
Most Apline's are 95-102
Kenwood Excelon is 105

Does your current high level amplifier have pre-outs? That's what I would use if it were availalble. Otherwise you would have to use RCA splitters to get you what you need. I haven't seen any EQ or Preamp setup that gives you front/rear/sub off of a single set of RCA's.

Having thought it out a bit , I would like to do a Nexus mod project.

However I simply cannot go without a proper volume knob of some kind and the thought of running the nexus audio out directly into my Alpine amp with Kappas is SCARY. Even if I DL'd some kind of master volume control app.

The solution of course is to mount the nexus as shown in the traditional double din and then mount my Alpine CDA-9834 below the double din, where people often put a CB or Scan Gauge. Minor cutting will be required but i already removed the cig-lighter and change tray so that space is empty. My alpine HU of course has the TILT option (pre-2005) which would allow it to be usable even that low to the floor. This way I can keep my deck including the pre-outs for amp & subs. The nexus will feed into the HU aux-in.

That is my plan and i think it would look clean.. It will be a few months though.

Sorry for not getting back.

I had some pics of the install but I lost them on my phone.

I originally tried to mount a Nook Color in there, but it turned out to be too big. I had hacked a bunch of the original radio mounting structure to make way, and trimmed a a little on the bezel so the tablet would lay flat. I used red 3m tape to mount the tablet to the bezel.

Right now I am using a cig lighter (2 amp) charger to power the tablet. Audio is ran through the headphone jack to a 4 channel amp. At the moment I'm using a software on screen volume control until I go ahead and order a RCA inline volume control.

Internet is done with wifi tether through my cell.

I use an app called tasker. It automates things based on certain triggers such as power on and power off. Since I have power through the cig lighter, when I turn the key, the unit comes on, backlight set to full, screen timeout set to 1 hour, turn on wifi, gps, bluetooth. When I turn the key off, power is cut off, and the backlight is set to low, screen timeout set to 8 seconds, turn off gps/wifi/bluetooth. So basically when I turn the key, it wakes the unit up and sets everything full power, when I turn the key off it puts it to sleep and turns everything off.

Still looking for a solution to handle telephone calls through the tablet. I've tried a few and they don't work well, or in the way that I want.


All in all, its pretty cool. Definetly has a big wow factor. Its quite distracting though. And a little buggy, nothing ever seems to run like it should 100% of the time. Like yesterday there was an update for 4.2.2 android. I installed it, and now I can't connect to any wifi.

I'd say, if your an android geek, go for it. If you dont know your way around an android inside and out, then I'd say don't do this at home.

thanks! the pioneer appradio (while more expensive) using something like ARliberator might be a little tamer for someone that isn't quite ready to geek out that much.

i am an XDA geek..but this is daunting...

I have the Pioneer AVIC-Z130BT that tilts up from the bottom and I love it. It's a full, touch screen navigation, DVD compatible unit. Tilted all the way up, it's perfect...even in park.

Unless someone talks me out of it, I am going to go for a Nexus 7 / Cadence Sound CEQ777. I guess I will lose local radio, but that isn't that big a deal to me. If I want to, I could add a cheap single din unit for radio. I should note that I am already running an amp, with high level adapters from the stock head unit into the pre-amp inputs on the amp.

Advantages:

• For trips, I can plug a USB into the CEQ777 for when I am out of cell data range.

• I can tether the Nexus 7 to my cell for Pandora and the like.

• I think I can get one of those ball mounts so that I can put the Nexus 7 down low and tilt it up.

• The CEQ 777 has a volume knob

Disadvantages:

• The Nexus 7 won't be flush mounted, so maybe easier to steal.

Anyone see anything wrong with this setup? I don't know Cadence Sound, so a lot depends on the quality of that piece.

Bracket part number for a 1999 is either 86211-89111 for "Bracket - Radio 1" or part number 86212-89111 for "Bracket - Radio 2". I don't kniw the difference between them but it looks like OP has bracket "Bracket - Radio 1" showing in the first post.

Bumping an old thread:
When you pull out the factory unit, there are 2 plugs off to one side. I know one is the antenna, but the other looks similar, and is smaller.
What is that? And what do I hook that wire to? There's nothing that matches that on the new unit.
