3RZ Runners Only

Kryptoroxx hey buddy I read maybe 4-6 months ago something about a oil leak below exhaust manifold, somewhere in the oilfilter housing area(can't remember if you had the problem or someone else)...lone behold mine just started leaking there as well...I've been searching and searching for the threads I was reading but seem to not be able to find them. Any chance you solved yours and/or know what exactly to search for on the forums maybe point some fingers in a direction(s) to search and I can get going on the leg work of researching this thing lol
Yep that was me too lol. Fairly easy repair.....but messy. I also ended up having to drop the oil pan and later the front main with the oil pump. All sealed up now I think [emoji23]

I got my seals through amazon after looking up the seal numbers in the manual. I will see if I can find that order.

Pretty cool. Good engine selection for that little thing. Never understood the v8 engines. They all weigh a ton.

I had no spots in my driveway either. Must have only been leaking when running. I lost a quart every 3000 miles.

Hey guys,

Forgive this question as I'm certain it's been covered before, but has a consensus ever been reached regarding 3RZ timing chain replacement interval?

Everything I've read is that it's a "lifetime" part, but I'm wondering if someone knows differently.

It's a pretty hefty chain. I've only heard of replacement a few times.....and it's been on 400k engines. The way I figure it when the timing chain is due....and a rebuild might just be a better solution to give a fresh build to the engine.

Kryptoroxx... not specifically a 3rz question but sort pertains to it still so i figured id ask ya....how many other totota engines do you know of that has a timing belt/chain that lasts as long as 3rz's? Or rather considered "lifetime" part? I think thats a major plus having that lol sorry little bit out there but hoping you or someone woukd know

Every R series engine and the 1GR 4.0 V6 all have chain driven cams.

Yeah i know all about the r series if youre refering to 18, 20, 22 and such those are just the more well known ones. I wasnt asking which ones are chain or belt! Maybe i worded that wrong if so i do apologize. I know a fair amount around vehicles, engines and whatnot(except suspenion lol) , more than average joe for sure and eagerly learn more daily thanks to you gracious forum members! so timing belt or timing chain: most of the time not all, belts have some plastic or all plastic timing covers and chains dont have any is the easiest way i think about it..or google. Ha but ive never heard of any other toyota as long as ive been a fan of em, that timing chain or belt either or being considered a lifetime part....all my 20, 22r(e)'s are definetly not lifetime! Unless youre saying all toyota timing chains are considered "lifetime" part? Maybe im understandinf you wrong?

To be fair, an all aluminum 5.3 or LS1 engine is only 50-60 pounds more fully dressed with all things considered. Add 80 lbs for an Iron Block LS or almost 150 for a full cast small block and iron cased transmission, and you're talking way too heavy. The one I'll never understand is the 4BT Cummins in an FJ40, extremely heavy, noisy and shaky.

I don't know of any of them that have a change interval, the R series usually wears out the guides before the chains. Haven't heard of any issues with the 4.0's yet. I think the consensus is if you're doing a rebuild, replace it, or if you're already close enough doing another part and it's been a looong time, replace it.

Since the runner has changed quite a bit since the last time i posted in the thread.. its time for an update

I think i may have misunderstood, what was spoken earlier. But now that you say that it makes sense as being considered "lifetime". Haha feel like an idiot there i just was looking at it from the wrong way i guess

The 22r, if you have the dual row from the factory, is a lifetime part. There's no way that little engine could stretch the dual row lol. There was a kit available from LC that would convert you to a dual row. I think it was 150? Pretty easy decision if you were doing a timing chain.

You could do the same thing with the 3rz too unless I'm completely off my rocker.

The 2tr engine probably has a fairly lengthy replacement value but since they brought in vvti to the R family I'd be willing to bet that replacement interval is around 100k.

Other than that I think the 4.0 has a replacement interval.

Isnt running the 20r head on a 22r block a big reason folks do it for the dual row of the 20r? I think i remember something like that anyways getting off topic here...topic being 3rz runners only haha sorry

Not sure on the rest of the stuff, but I know that the pre-VVTi 1GR doesn't have a replacement interval. My dad's is at 190K and my mom's is at 165K with no issues yet.

It was one of the reasons. The biggest reason people did it though is it took an already bulletproof motor (although weak) and make it even more indestructible. Great little engine. Pretty good torque for what it was.

I thought the 1gr had a replacement interval. I could very well be mistaken though.

Recently getting poor MPG's around 18L/100km or about 13MPG..

I've cleaned the MAF and it didn't help.

Anyone know how the Fuel pressure regulator works and how to test it? I'm consistently getting 50 psi of pressure and pretty sure that's way high.

Any other common things to check?
