3RZ Runners Only

Question for you 3rz guys.

I have a base 1996 auto with 210K miles. Every now and then it stalls in stop and go traffic. it happens maybe once every few months, usually after a quick stop in traffic. It always starts right up afterwards. Other than that it seems to run great. I recently replaced the TPS sensor and thought that replaced the problem but no dice.

How Is your normal idle?

Hey 3RZ buddies!

I currently drive a 3RZ with a 5 speed (4.10 gears, standard 265/70R16 tires) and find its "get up and go" adequate for city and highway driving. The only times it's a little lame is trying to pull long, steep hills at high speed.

I'm looking at a 3RZ / 4WD / Auto as a backup rig, I guess. Don't know about it's gear ratio. Just wanted to see if anyone has personal experience with the 3RZ + Auto. Should I expect it to be about the same or worse than the 5 speed?

After wrenching on 22RE's and now the 3RZ I just can't quite bring myself to buy anything with more cylinders :bounce:

I've never driven one but I heard it's a pig, meaning slow as shit. With the manual you can choose your power band in 3rd or 4th depending on the speed. I live in a hilly neighborhood so I power up hills in 3rd at 3000rpms. On the highway I put it in 4th & can stay at 65mph. Of course the pedal is mashed to the floor.

I have the 3rz /4WD/Auto with 4.56 gears. Everything in the engine is stock except for the OEM mini headers.

I live in the PNW and drive in the mountains all the time. I can't go 75 mph over the steep passes but it doesn't really bother me. There always seems to be an RV or semi slowing things up anyway. I just turn off OD and keep the ECT button engaged. I frequently have the rig fully loaded (including a larger roof box) and can almost always keep up with traffic. It's not exhilarating or sporty by any means but that's not why I have this vehicle.

I love the 3rz. Sometimes you need to step on it but it likes to be pushed and runs well over 3K rpms. The engine is simple and easy to work on. Mine has over 220K on it and I wouldn't hesitate driving it cross county tomorrow. I've recently taken it on 2-3k mile road trips around the mountain west and it did great. I'm keeping mine until it dies...then I'm getting a 4th Get with a V8 LOL.

Cool, thanks so much! Exactly the feedback I was interested in.

Can you tell me what is the axle code in your door jamb? I want to see if this prospect has the 4.56’s as well

The front bumpers on both of you guys' rigs Scramble and rkntoy look so classy.

Just a couple photos of Red currently, for some 3rz inspiration...

That first photo is pretty recent, Utah still thinks its winter in some places, haha.

That AZ paint starting to show some great patina, I'm beginning to really dig this look

Did some awesome desert camping. Red did a fantastic job towing that little trailer as well.

3RZ Brothers Unite!

I have a concern. I just installed the new engine Ive been working on into my truck. I built the bottom end and just went thru the head and made sure everything looked OK, and it does. Head work just wasn't in the cards this time. It runs great.

But I'm a little concerned about the amount of what I think is valve noise. How much valve noise is too much valve noise? How much valve clatter do you guys get from your trucks?

Edit...
I did check valve clearances this morning, cold engine, head torqued down on the block, etc, all the numbers look good. A few of the valves are at the bigger end of the spec, but still within the specified range...

Red, I've been following your engine rebuild in your thread...well done.

Regarding valve noise. Mine also sounds like a small diesel (reminds me of my buddys old VW diesel rabbit). I have had the same concern for mine. In fact I have had 2 local, reputable mechanics look at it, because I thought it was excessive, even though all valve clearances were well within spec, and they assured me everything is fine.

BTW, I have 226k on original motor.

Keep us posted.
