3RZ Runners Only

Mine sounds like a diesel too. Seems to be normal with these motors even though it was really quiet for the first 10 years. My mechanic friend calls it the Toyota Tap.

Red, I've been following your engine rebuild in your thread...well done.

Regarding valve noise. Mine also sounds like a small diesel (reminds me of my buddys old VW diesel rabbit). I have had the same concern for mine. In fact I have had 2 local, reputable mechanics look at it, because I thought it was excessive, even though all valve clearances were well within spec, and they assured me everything is fine.

BTW, I have 226k on original motor.

Keep us posted.

Thanks guys, this makes me feel a little better. I'm pretty excited about the new engine, I think I was just little worried since this is my third try.

What rpms are you guys hearing the tapping / ticking noises? Mine has 230k+ and I don't really hear any "diesel" sounds from it, though it's not sowing-machine quiet.

Mine is much more noticeable at idle. Its just a clicking, rattle coming from the valve cover. The noise nearly completely disappears if you rev the motor up to 1200-1500 rpm and higher.

Also it clicks whether the engine is hot or cold.

Getting LCE headers - which cat back exhaust?

Hey, fellas, I'm about to jump on the LCE street headers and would like to upgrade the exhaust at same time. I want to up performance but go not loud, but a bit more of a growl (ha) than stock.
I know a bunch of you run LCE or Thorley headers; what cat back do you have/recommend/hate?

thanks for any input, very inspiring thread!

(cleaned my MAF and cleaned/oiled K N air filter and my little girl sounds in excellent health. Perfect idle, never heats up, doesn't burn oil, handles 10 hour drives at 75 without breaking a sweat. I do, up hills, hence the headers;)

My DT headers added a nice rumble under the hood. I have the JBA cat back & it's loud. I think any high performance cat back is pretty loud. I think the Borla sounds the best. The Gibson is similar to stock, maybe a little louder? Maybe a TRD muffler? I'm not sure. Check some youtube videos. Welcome to the club!

Thanks, bro!:tea: Trying to get my ass OFF of youtube;) Good to know what the JBAs are like. The Borla's definitely on my list. I tend to run the little truck at pretty high rpms, so don't want to become the buzzing insect of the neighborhood. SOund def counts. Thanks!

Please keep us posted on your decision. I plan to install headers and cat back exhaust (and possibly a couple other goodies) this winter.

Also, thanks for being considerate of your neighbors. You sound like the kind of neighbor I would like...

Any of y'all with high mileage 3rz's taken long road trips? I'm a little hesitant about taking mine with 270k.

Last summer, with 230k on the clock, I took a 3000 mile road trip through the Rockies loaded to the gills with gear plus a hitch carrier full of stuff. There were plenty of hill pulls at elevation that involved 4500rpm+ at full throttle for minutes at a time.

Got >22mpg and didn't burn a drop of oil.

Just ordered the Headers from LCE 2 minutes ago, gonna wait on the exhaust until I hear what the Header's like;) I'm mentally stuck between the LCE exhaust and the Borla. I really want side exit instead of back...

I live on a dirt road in New Mex with my nearest neighbors hundreds of yards away... I hear more gunshots than cars! No neighbors = good neighbors;)

I saw Borla's at AutoAnything.com with a side exit. They're out there but hard to find. Might be for a Taco but they fit.

I live in a rural area to so I dont bother my neighbor's. My neighbor down the block has a 1st gen Taco with glass packs & it sounds awesome.

When the following presented itself, I thought about cat delete, high flow and some other options;)

SO the headers is beautiful, no doubt, but my cat has no flange on the engine side to bolt onto, so I ordered a couple from LCE along with gaskets and bolts and there'll have to be a weld. No real biggie. Part'll be here this weekend, get it done Monday or Tues. Yeehaw;)

Also-just rolled over 150k!

So have you already installed the header? Did it go smooth?

Or, are you waiting until you get all the parts in hand?

If not, I'm hoping it does go smooth for you...

I'm running the header and the Hi Flow cat from LCE. Just those two things made my truck quite a bit louder. Its kind of a hollow raspy louder. As for cat back I used a Walker quiet flow, I know its more of a replacement than an upgrade. It was still too loud for my taste so I added a glass-pack "resonator" in line and it is now about right IMO, but I really like quiet.

BTW, I hate the Walker, not because it doesn't do a good job, but because it is so rusty after about a year that it looks like the oldest part on the truck and its supposed to be Stainless.

Nope, waiting for the parts as it's my DD;)

Another note, rolled over 150k and for its birthday threw its first cyl 1 misfire code... it begins! Time to get a valve job. Thanks for the kind wishes, sure it'll go well once parts in hand.

Thanks for the details, Red, that helps to know. My exhaust system is hands down the nastiest looking thing under the truck. The back flange on the cat is almost unrecognizable as such. Looks like a ball of crud. Definitely going to replace it, performance and sound will determine what I go with in the end.

Many thanks fo the input! Anyway, on the valve job, my uncle Joe worked for Toyota all his life up in CO, opening and establishing dealerships I think. Knows everyone in the state and he's hooking me up with the master mechanic who teaches all the Toyota techs in the region to reup this little 3rz his bad ol self... this is uber lucky. Also means I can't ask him to do the balance shaft delete:D Pretty sure he'd be insulted.

All that to say that I'm happy the code my little babe threw was something I was expecting and already knew about. I've been watching too many 1000hp 3rzs on youtube and pushed her as if she were new. Nevertheless, because of the above connection and way besides the obvious cash hit, I'm pretty excited to see how this ends;)

Anyone considered Dual Fuel Filters?

I know this is more of a 3rz question, and it is a bit of a hypothetical question.

Knowing that the fuel filter on the older 3rz is a little hard to change, has anyone any knowledge about running a sacrificial filter ahead of it? To elaborate, keep a new Toyota filter in the original location, and then mount a second one ahead of it somewhere in the engine bay on the drivers side.

The new easily accessible one could be a cheaper auto store brand and change it out on a schedule. As ours uses banjo bolts on both ends, a section of fuel hose with banjo bolts on each end would connect the 2 filters.

Would there be any negatives other than complication to this set up? Fuel pressure? Harder on the fuel pump?

Primary reason for thinking about this is sub-standard gas in southern countries. We are considering another trip south.

Thanks.

I don't see the point of the second filter. If it's downstream of the original filter, the original filter will catch all the debris anyway. I'd just run one good OEM filter and move it to move accessible location, many people have done this, there is plenty of room in the engine bay.

If you are going install a second filter, I'd install it behind the original filter location towards the gas tank. Maybe a smaller in-line filter that's easy to access.
