4-Runner Manuals

Just wanted to collect some opinions and see what people were using for manuals. It seems that the popular Haynes/Chilton manuals do not exist for the late model 4-Runners not sure why though, there are certainly plenty of them on the road.
Being one that likes to tinker with cars I was wondering what alternatives where out there? I have never used anything but either the Haynes/Chilton. I looked and it doesn't seem as though Helms makes one. What is everyone else using out there?

The factory service manuals. They are offered via ebay frequently.

Paper verisons are more expensive. CD verisons are cheap but have no index. Search this site and you'll find plenty of threads regarding factory service manuals.
 
I searched and could not find a part number for the manuals.

Is there a Toyota part number?


Here is a current auction for the 2004 manuals, vol 1 & 2 Starting bid is $125.
 
I don't know about part numbers, but there are publication numbers.

For 2004, there were the following factory manuals.

RM1059U1 - Repair Manual Volume 1
RM1059U2 - Repair Manual Volume 2
NCF257U - New Car Features
EWD552U - Electrical Wiring Diagram (Manual)

These and any other Toyota manual can be obatined on CD, printed, or downloaded directly from Toyota's service web site. The download option is only ~$10 but just like the CD, gives you MANY pdf files without much organization.

Search the forums for more info on the various options.

No, the manual generally does not include part numbers.

Search for 2003Toyota4RunnerPartsList.pdf. It was posted sometime back and probably has what you want.
 
i downloaded that a little while back...unfortunately there are some differences bt. the 03 and 04. For example, when I broke one of the clips in the truck area, I used the 03 part number. The clip was actually bigger than the one already on the car. Minor but a little annoying.

Is there a limit to what you can download? My brother has a Tundra, and friends have a Tacoma and Corolla. Hopefully I can download the 4 I need.

I'll probably spend the $10 and download the electronic version. But still buy the 2005 printed copy when it is available.

I'm not sure where that file came from. Maybe PM the original poster to see if he/she can get the 04 and 05 parts list. It's very handy.

It took me about 5 posts to realize this thread had nothing to do with "manuals" or I refer to them as "5 speeds". :arrow:
 
I just received my RM1059U2 Maintenance/Repair Manual this afternoon in the mail and all I can say is "WOW!"

This is an awesome manual! It is a combination of step-by-step but each step includes the technical information like required torque values, if a part needs to be replaced upon rebuild, etc.

BTW, I didn't buy the Troubleshooting manual "U1" because I have the electronic equivilant.
 
Yea I agree, but it aint cheap. I believe it cost me $ 225 for all three.

Know that Toyota doesn't make any manuals on CD-ROM; they only sell the paper kind.

The CD's on eBay are bootleg copies of PDF files downloaded from TIS. The copyright doesn't seem to be stopping people from trying to make money on it. That's why the "quality" of the CD's is very inconsistent. Some people go to the trouble of making index files and renaming the PDF's to make things easier to find, and some don't.
 
I love using the computer. It has saved me lots of money. However, I am funny about certain things and this is true about service manuals. I just like holding it in my hand and being able to walk it outside to trace something like a wiring diagram. FSMs are expensive. The Haynes manual does not even skim the surface of the real thing. Even though I spent over $ 200 on three manuals, I still think it is the best money that I have invested on my t4r so far. And I have invested lots since I am religious about doing all of the maintenance myself. This means all fluids (tranny, TC, coolant, and diffs) changed at each 30 k mile intervals. In another 20 k miles I will be looking forward to changing the timing belt, water pump, TB tensioner, TB pulley; and saving close to $ 1000.

I have all the ones for my previous car, 2000 celica, including the new car feature book.

The new car feature book lists all the changes for the specific model that year. It also caries the most technical information on systems; ie: trac, dac, vvt, etc... So the 03 and 05 books would be good for us.
 
For the record, here is all I could find by way of PUBLISHED (i.e., paperback) references specifically for my model year 1997 Toyota 4Runner.

I could NOT find a Haynes or Peterson published shop manual (do you know if they exist?)

Found a few online manuals

Found these online in the doc section and elsewhere ...
