400W Inverter Mod?

this is what my dual battery setup is like. my battery and dc-dc charger is in one box as shown here on my setup. all i have to do is connect my fridge to the box and it's always on all the time whether i use the car or not.

I installed a lithium 100ah battery charged by a Redarc bcdc supplying power to a few things such as the fridge from a newly installed DC plug when engine is off.

The thought process is that I can use the alternator to power the fridge thru the inverter when the engine is running using the ARB 120v plug. Simultaneously, I would have the ARB plugged into a DC outlet with power supplied by an aux battery when the engine is off. The ARB will automatically switch to 120v when available then back over to DC when engine/alternator is off. And I don't have to unplug and replug every time I start the engine. And the ARB fridge has one DC power plug and one 120v power plug.

But I am wide open to ideas and suggestions.

Edit: I expect the alternator to adjust to accommodate the additional load on the system from the fridge.
 
I can't tell what i'd need from that site to just use my original outlets at 400w. I emailed them. I'm thinking i just need the 2 wiring harnesses and no outlets.. but do i need a longer cable for the rear outlet?

After I saw this post i started to research their 400w harness also. But i stumbled across this site. Apparently they're banned on the Tacoma site due to seller issues.

Worked on my 2016 Trail

Thanks Josh_357 this worked. I found the writing a little hard to visualize, if anyone else does also here is my take:

1. To start you only need to remove the ac/dc panel in the rear. Use a plastic pry tool and pry from the bottom. rest it out of the way

2. there are two white connector plugs in the inverter. unplug the right one or the one with all the wires in it. I found unplugging it gave me more room to solder.

3. Find the black wire in the plug. for me it was in the bottom right. cut the black wire leaving as much of the wire dangling out of the back of the white connector. I did not undo the wire loom. I just cut it at the tape.

4. strip and crimp or solder to another wire, I soldered and shrink wrapped a 7" piece of wire to it. on the other end I crimped it with a ring heat shrink wire connector.

5. Remove the 10mm bold under the inverter, add ring end and replace bolt. Not a lot of room to work here, I used a little ratchet and an extender.

All done.



I know this is an old thread, but I did the mod this weekend and wanted to share my experience.

On my 2018, I took the black wire from the connector into the inverter, the NSW wire, and cut it from the harness and grounded the end going into the connector. In otherwords grounding the NSW line into the inverter, leaving the harness NSW wire open. I did not cut the speed wire, and everything works as expected. Can drive all day with 400W setting.
 
I ordered the KTJO4x4 harness to make my outlets 400w all the time and it was shipped no problem. And, the install went smooth.

Hey all, just thought I'd put my findings here.

I tried grounding the Black wire on my 2015, and although when shifting in to drive or reverse, the 400w lamp remained illuminated and my load (Makita battery charger ~200 Watts~) remained on, as soon as I started to drive, BOTH 100w and 400w lamps turned off, and I had no usage of the 120v plug.

So, does anyone know if I have to ground the speed sensor wire, or is it looking for something else?


As an aside, I did this mod in my 2010 Tacoma Manual Trans, and I remember all I had to do was ground a purple wire, but there were way less electronics in that beast.

Not entirely sure which wire is which to be honest. I had just bought the kit and grounded the wire that came with the grounding hole-through terminal on it.

Then just used the secondary plug connector to add an outlet to the front.

Has been working great.

Does this also mean it works with the engine not running?

That looks really similar to this one that's only for Tacomas from Cali Raised... Cali Raised says this:


"Please note that this harness DOES NOT allow the inverter to be accessible while the truck is off -- the truck will still need to be on to power the inverter and prevent battery draw."

I know for sure the Cali Raised won't work on a 4Runner (Or at very least mine)
 
Can anyone point me to an installation guide for the KTJO 4x4 400W inverter harness, specifically for the 5th gen 4runner?

I’m also confused about how it’s supposed to work because their website does not have an installation guide and their webpage for the harness makes a reference to “Packages 1, 2, and 3”, but they do not elaborate on what each of these are supposed to be.

And their website also notes that the purchase of 120v 400w outlets are required but they need to be purchased separately.

I've had the same questions, I emailed them for some clarification on Friday but haven't heard back yet.

Regardless, there's no reason not to buy the $60 kit, if you buy the $45 inverter harness you still need the $15 outlet harness anyway, so there's more value in the kit even if you don't use it all.
 
I couldn't find any pictures so here is what worked on my 2022 4Runner. I extended the black wire coming from the inverter and attached it to a nearby ground, fooling the inverter into thinking the transmission is in Park or Neutral. The other end of this black wire coming from the harness is left cut off or open. The short cut off wire sticking out of the crimp is just there to fill the crimp since the crimp was too large for the tiny wire coming out of the inverter plug. I had to remove the speed sensor wire from the same plug so the inverter doesn't get a speed signal when driving. I taped up the connector pin so it can't touch anything. The speed sensor wire is the smallest diameter red wire, the one between the pink and purple wires. The inverter now stays on 400 watts while driving.

To remove the cover with the 110 volt and 12 volt sockets, pull out on the sides and bottom.

I just did this on my 2015 4Runner Limited, and it worked great. Thanks so much! Now we can run our son’s oxygen concentrator while driving. This is a huge blessing to us on vacation. For my vehicle, the #2 wire was a light green color. I followed this video.
