4R for highlander for towing

My main reason for purchasing a 4R instead of a highlander is because I plan to tow a boat on occasion, that weighs about 4k lbs on the trailer. I have read that the body on frame construction is superior to the unit-body construction for towing. However, both vehicles are rated the same SAE J2807 5000lbs tow capacity.

If this is the international standard to compare vehicles, is it a fair conclusion that they can both tow this load equally well? What is it about the 4R that makes it better at towing than the highlander?

IF - big "IF" - your boat AND trailer weigh 4000# TOGETHER, buy what you want. Overthinking.

4000 pounds is pretty close to both vehicles limit (I believe 5the gens are only rated for 4750 pounds). If I were you, I’d be looking at a full size truck.

Ratings and towing ability are separate discussions. I've not towed with a Highlander, so I can only guess, but I wouldn't use it to tow a 4,000 lb boat.

Many people use a shortcut calculation that towing capacity should equal 1.5 x towed weight. For a vehicle rated 5,000 lbs towing, that's 3,333 towed (boat, trailer, all the crap inside the boat, including gas, etc). There's much more to it, but that's a useful guide.

If you want a towing SUV, you should look at one based more or less on a full size truck frame: Suburban/Tahoe, Expedition, and Sequoia. Or an actual truck.

I don't get people who get all worked up because someone posted a question on a topic that has been asked. You can ignore it and it will die, or maybe someone will see the new post that wouldn't have seen the old one and offer something new. There was a big AT tire thread 3 or 4 years ago.. Everytime someone posts a tire thread you get the HWGA replies. Things change, threads get burried, it's nice to see new perspectives on old topics.

Now in this specific thread we may have a guy who's just trolling the guys who get all worked up... Don't take the bait.

this guy posted a ton of threads just last week,
he didn't respond to the thoughtful responses from users. They were run of the mill questions covered in the sticky "Are You a New or Prospective 5th Gen 4Runner Owner? Need Help Searching? Start Here!". Seriously - all covered.

It really, really looked like trolling.

Our Mod put all of his questions in one thread, but as the vague questions increased, eventually the thread was locked, and the user was banned, fgeorge097

Now he's back doing the exact same thing, as fgeorge098.

Personally, I'd love to see this guy get a highlander.

Nope been around this and other forums for over 20 years. Seen many die when people don't post anymore. Posts keep forums alive. There's so many forums out there with a post a week or less.. Basically dead. I don't see this forum flooded with tons of useless posts. Yeah there's one here and there. But hey keep rudely jumping on people and fewer and fewer will post. Pretty soon hardly anyone will post. I've seen it happen to once great forums that were very active. It's the attitude of the forum police that ruin things.

I understand what you’re saying, however is it really that hard to do some simple research? We unfortunately live in a world where some people don’t do research and/ or learn anymore. They want the answer now and then to be gone. You know what else makes a good forum....contribution. This OP has done nothing but want the answer now and if he doesn’t get it then he’ll just start another new thread. If he were to contribute and/or continue to discuss his thread or thank members for their answers, then I don’t think he would be getting such a hard time.
