4R for highlander for towing

Nope been around this and other forums for over 20 years. Seen many die when people don't post anymore. Posts keep forums alive. There's so many forums out there with a post a week or less.. Basically dead. I don't see this forum flooded with tons of useless posts. Yeah there's one here and there. But hey keep rudely jumping on people and fewer and fewer will post. Pretty soon hardly anyone will post. I've seen it happen to once great forums that were very active. It's the attitude of the forum police that ruin things.

I'll continue to call out the lazy folks who won't even attempt to search:thumb3:...and if they don't like it?

I doubt anyone will miss them. They're not going to contribute anything meaningful anyway.

I've been here since 2009 when the 5th gen first came out, and there was a bunch of guys that felt the same way.....and the forum has grown x50 since then. Just go through the first 5 pages of topics and tell me how many could've been solved by a simple search...and there's your answer.

I honestly don't expect you to "get it".

.

If none of those people from the first 5 or 10 or 20 pages who could have searched posted you wouldn't have an active forum, you wouldn't have the activity or clicks to support the advertising and you'd have a recipe that could lead to stagnation. Who determines what's a useful post and when it's been long enough to post about a topic that's previously been posted?

I do "get it" I just don't "agree with it". And I'll leave it at that. The only thing worse than a useless post in a forum is two guys in a pissing contest.

Maybe you better step in here before poor ol' Pat strokes out on us...

Literally no one on here was getting worked up, this user just has a strange history of asking questions and then ghosting and never even replying. This post alone would be just typical new poster stuff, but in context of all their other posts it's hard to believe it's real and not trolling.

And the fact that they changed their username and asked another question should make it absolutely clear it's just trolling.

Cant find any direct highlander vs. 4Runner for towing threads

They both have the same SAE J2807 rating at 5000 lb, and that is going uphill through a desert with the A/C blasting (per the rating standards), so why should I assume the 4R can tow better than highlander?

Please explain
Thanks you

Here are my thoughts, been towing for a long time. You wont find those threads.

4,000 pounds? Get a larger vehicle. Towing is not only about what a vehicle will pull, but also what it will safely handle in traffic, hills and stopping. Get in a tricky situation and the trailer will drive the truck.

I have 3 full size trucks in addition to my wifes 4runner. I would not pull my boat, which weighs less, with hers. You also have to figure in fuel weight and all of the goodies that you are carrying in the truck / boat.

I have been on boat ramps that my Z-71 4WD had trouble with due to being wet and very steep.

If you only have those two options, get the 4runner for Body on Frame construction and the in-line drive train. It is also easier to mod for towing (rear air bags, tranny cooler etc.).

Or get a smaller boat. Not saying it cannot be done, but can it be done safely?

Tough crowd? ... or stupid questions ... asked repeatedly? Hmm.

Look dipwad... your question was answered right here ...

IF - big "IF" - your boat AND trailer weigh 4000# TOGETHER, buy what you want. Overthinking.

Did you read it? Do you comprehend it? How about YOU answer THAT hm?

Go away. You don't even own a boat. Find a Highlander forum.

..... aaaaand the troll sucks me in. :frusty:

I've banned this guy before and he just created a new name. My advice is to just ignore him and his awful questions, he will get the hint. same advice for redundant posts.

Just to answer your question directly, I'd say the 4Runner would without a doubt be a better towing platform than the Highlander. Slightly more curb weight, body on frame, beefier truck based powertrain, brakes, and suspension, as well as the ability to better upgrade for increased towing performance.

Thank you for your good assistance.

I have ruled out highlander because I do not believe it will be good at towing my 4000 lbs.

Now it is down to 4R and Tacoma.

Thoughts? Do we think Tacoma will get the 4000lb tow job done? The GMC Canyon has a bit better tow cap and is a bit nicer on the interior, but the tacoma obviously has the resale/reliabilty factor. Thoughts on the GMC Canyon vs. Tacoma??

GMC has a forum.

I bet they'd have an opinion.

All of these are bad choices you nonce

you need a sequoia if your towing something so heavy

edit: why is OP so uneducated on vehicles today?

I do not understand - Tacoma has a tow cap of 6500 lbs.

Why is towing 4000 lbs not considered OK?

Thank you for any real help. Not sure why everybody takes time to chime in with insults instead of just being a helpful forum member.

It’s ok for towing that weight, but you also need to take into account all of the stuff you’re going to put on the boat when towing (gas, equipment, etc...). Now all of the sudden you’re towing 5000 lb+. Very close to the limit. It’s not that it can’t but is it the best tool for the job? I can use the back end of a screwdriver to put in a nail if I needed to, but why wouldn’t I just use a hammer?

The reason why people are getting upset is that you asked a similar question about a 4runner vs. Tacoma. You got reasonable answers (I gave you one myself) maybe not the ones you wanted, but honest opinions. If you really want to be an informed consumer, do some research with everyone’s best friend google about towing, tow ratings, etc. Also go to some boating websites/forums and see what they are using to tow their boats. If you come with more background knowledge than what is printed on the dealer brochure you’ll find the people to be much more helpful. You also don’t need to create a brand new thread for everything. Read this
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/208458-you-new-prospective-5th-gen-4runner-owner-need-help-searching-start-here.html
You’ll find numerous threads on towing and then add on your thoughts/questions after reading the previous answers given.

Bottom line is you don't want your tow vehicle rating to be so close to the amount towed. The 4R will tow that amount, but not well. There are better vehicles suited for this (i.e. full size trucks).

There are probably a hundred threads here on towing. Please use the search feature, or Google (5th gen 4Runner, towing). You will get much less negative feedback if you search first, and then ask questions in those threads.

The T4R forum is not the place to compare a Taco to a GMC product. This is a 4Runner forum, not a towing forum.

Would recommend a ford raptor or a honda ridgeline. My buddy says behind the badge, they are pretty similar under the hood. Both have a 3.5L V6.
