4Runner Carnage!

That was one of the things that I asked them, and they are so it should turn out pretty nice after its all done and over with. Plus that gets rid of the only noticeable scratches in the paint on my runner so I should be good to go. I'll make sure to post pics when its done.
 
First off, glad to hear that you are ok and that your 4Runner is not totaled and all that. Second off, I have a real hard time believing that you took that much damage at 5 mph. I hit a guard rail going about 30 then bounced off and spun and hit it in the back too and still did less damage than that??
 
While Juice can explain it in detail, it does not surprise me.

It would guess the budget truck was a large box truck with a high door/lift. Judging by the height of the damage, the impact line appears above the bumper. Note the radiator/grille and hood.

If you hit a vehicle, barrier or obstruction at the bumper line that is one thing. Hitting something higher or lower and/or at an angle, the damage can be remarkably worse.

I would guess the airbag did not deploy based on speed and/or collision was not at the sensor location.

There is nothing like a love tap anymore. My neighbor in a minivan rear ended a full sized SUV at 8 mph and his front was totally wasted. The SUV only had a scratch on the bumper. Go figure.

I can see what you are saying. I know that a higher impact would result in more damage due to less reinforcements and what not, but still.... thats a lot of damage. I would hate to think that a 4Runner would crinkle up like that at 5mph. I'd hate to hit a box truck at 30 mph... you'll probably die.
 
Yeah that looks excessive for 5 mph regardless of what was hit and the angle of approach. I think the inaccuracies of speedometers at low speeds are something to take into account here. At least there were no injuries and the runner will live on :bigok:

I was watching a thing on the news recently. Old cars used to have these huge chrome bumpers that were bolted right to the frame. When hitting a solid concrete wall, they could withstand crashes up to 5mph without any damage. They then tested modern cars. The Nissan altima suffered 6k damage from hitting a wall at 5mph.
 
Modern cars are designed to absorb energy in a crash. The frame, body and engine components all have this design feature.

The idea is to bend, crumple etc and absorb the kinetic energy and reduce the rapid deceleration of a crash.

As Eskimochaos said, older cars had big ass bumpers and all the kinetic energy was transfered right to the passengers. That is what causes fatalities.

Watch a few of the slow mo crash tests by the Insurance Institutue for Highway Safety and you can see this in practice.

Funny thing is in a 5 mph crash, the driver barely feels the impact. That's what you get for 6 k in damage.
 
that bad boy is totalled. most likely. general rule of thumb, if the repair cost is at least 75% of the value its a total loss.

don't plan on partin' it out either, if they total it thats how they will get some of their money back, by scrapping it. I almost got in trouble last year for taking things off my runner when it was totaled

you can't make them use new OEM parts if your policy does not state so.

sorry i didn't see that it was not totaled, thats a shocker.

i would have been hoping for total loss. your resale value is going to suck big rocky mountain oysters
 
Maine Runner is right, It had a lift gate on the back and I hit the corner of it. You also have to take in the fact that a was accelerating, while he was at a dead stop. If I had hit him at 30 MPH I think that the damage would be significantly worse but it would probably look smilar to this.

P.S. Snookster, I don't plan on ever reselling it, so I don't really care that much
