Glad you are safe. What shocks me is all 4 people in the other car don't realize upcoming traffic is at a complete halt? I guess we'll never know. I imagine a passenger had to have yelled at that driver.

What happened to your front end?

The front left light, the bumper, the hood, left front fender, driver's side door were toasted. The engine still ran, no fluid dripping, and I even ran the truck a few feet to get out of traffic (since it's full time 4WD, just had to give it a LOT of gas for it to go)

Yes it was totalled, hence my ''new'' old 1998 4runner

Until the OP decided he wanted to just be stopped in the middle of the highway for no good reason and force them to slow down from 70-0 in a couple of seconds.....

Jrandom, just a few days before the accident, I was just beside where you live, SLC, on the bonneville speedway saltflats Really got a load of fun out of my 5th gen even if it died prematurely.

At least I didn't have to clean the ton of salt that adhered to the underneath of the truck from the multiple WOT runs I made on the speedway

Apparently in the old days many a wagon of folk wandered around there aimlessly, near death, stories of treasure boxes, chests and valuables, sinking into the salt that people shed to save weight trying to survive the crossing on the way to California.

Nothing like ripping across it in something with something that has a little get up and go though Yeah that stuff sticks when moist and the dust when dry woohoo. *cough *cough you can feel it suck the moisture from you skin.

Glad you're ok. As for the post saying this falsely demonstrates the 4Runner's rigidness.... come on man. The other car was destroyed. They left in an ambulance! Hope they're ok too.

Because first, I love to drive .

And, because I did have some more destinations to go, including las vegas and colorado. Doing multi-location trips by plane is kind of an hassle. Having my own vehicle lets me decide whenever I want to leave a location to go to another, or just go back home. This lets me choose cheap hotel on the fly (got a 30$ room at stratosphere las vegas).

Now, why I went to L.A., funny story, a friend from florida texted me while I was in vegas, saying he was in california, so I went to pick him up to bring him to las vegas with me, but we went to hollywood blvd and the hills to see the sign (that is NOT illuminated during the night!!?!!) then on our way back BAM this happened. Let's say my friend felt quite guilty about this, but he had no reason to, it was pretty funny

On a side note for my canadian friends;

Driving through the US is very enjoyable, loads of service locations on the interstate road system, and most of them are 24H. Going through various climate, from the desert of nevada to the tropical florida or the cold snowy great-lake region in one country is one sight to see. Let's say that the place is much more convenient to drive around than where I live (quebec)

I think the way to think if you want to enjoy such long road trips, is to enjoy the way to the destinations as much as the destinations themselves

Realize that the front is designed to crumple as in crumple zone to absorb the impact energy. I find it funny when people post photos like these falsely serve as examples of how stout their rig is.

No, it is not designed to crumple like that. There is significant intrusion into the passenger compartment, and the entire vehicle twisted, with the roof buckled.

Your point is certainly valid in some examples, but the damage done to the car shows far more destruction than what can be attributed to crumple zones. It's pretty clear the 4Runner is the vehicle you want to be in, in this case.

I rented a 2015 Sr5 for $25/day from LAX for 12 days back in Aigust. The drive to Vegas is awesome. We were coming from Monterey/Big Sur and cut over via Bakersfield. We went thru the Mojave as the sun was setting and we arrived into Vegas just after dark. Awesome scenery along the way!

..I got rammed at approx 70mph, guy hit the rear left corner of the truck with the right side of his car, and mostly hit the frame and the rear differential, kinda got under the truck. The 3 rear windows shattered, I have been projected forward at a pretty decent speed, and myself rammed the back of a semi truck. The impact feeling was massive. Each of our seats got into the fully reclined position...

I've been there too (I mean on the receiving end of similar collision) in 98 Isuzu Rodeo. I miss that truck very much, but for whatever reason Isuzu decided to not make it anymore. It was built the same way as T4R with BOF design.

During rush hour on 99 in Sacramento some Dodge Caravan with "failed brakes" (this is what they said) run into my stationary Isusu at full speed on the fast lane (he was doing around 70 at the time of the collision). Result was pretty much the same: got pushed 3 yards while still holding brakes till I the rear bumper of Crown Victoria that was parked in front of me went through my radiator and then I bounced back to receive the second hit from the rear.

Front sit were bent into full recline (bent metal) but damages on both ends were limited to the point where the frame started under the body. In my Rodeo 5 people (my parents, wife and 11 years old child) walked out without a scratch (Rodeo was salvaged because of repair cost). Dodge caravan looked similar to the Honda on your picture.

My brother is teasing me, that I burn more fuel than I should because I'm carrying "air" on my daily commute. I always respond, that I am carrying my armor.

As much as you can love your car, you will love it ten times more, when you just walk out of such accident without the scratch.
