4Runner Logo - Rear - Holding it on?

What holds the letters on the rear lift gate that spell out 4RUNNER? Is it adhesive, clips, bolted, etc....

I've got my plasti dip coming in tomorrow and wanted to paint the chrome bezel part but not the letters. If they are adhesive what are you guys using to stick them back on? 3M Emblem adhesive?

It's all adhesive, as is the Toyota logo. First time I dipped it I peeled the logo and lettering off and used 3m adhesive to put them back on. it was a pain in the ass. more recently, I just peeled off the old dip and masked off the whole plastic trim piece and did the whole thing as one... Looks better IMO.

Dip the whole emblem then just peel off the letters.

I was thinking about this too, I was wondering how well this works. I watched a video of a guy doing it a while back on a different emblem. I think he used a tooth pick.

Do you think I'd need to score around the letters with an exacto knife?

I was thinking of making a template with my 3D printer re-align and hold the letters in place if I remove them. I'll try dipping the whole thing and peeling the letters 1st though, just a l little concerned about being able to clean around all of the letters well enough.

There are lots of posts here, on youtube and P-D's site. Read up. One trick I learned is to put enough paint on all the sides and edges of the letters. As you make the painting passes, hold the can at angles up, down, left and right so you're coating all the sides well. If you coat them too thinly, the P-D separates as you peel it.
You should not have to score it.

Another thing I did wrong was hold the can too far from the target. This caused the paint to dry a little before hitting the surface, causing a gritty finish.

No don't use an exacto knife, that will scratch up the bib part. The toothpick will not scratch anything up. It will come off the letters super easily with just peeling them off and it will leave the bib part perfect as well since there is a tiny gap between it and the lettering. Cool thing about plasti dip is if you don't like the end result, peel it all off and try again or do something different! I ended up removing mine from the door eventually and using bedliner to paint it. Not a big fan of plasti dip myself.

It will come off the letters super easily with just peeling them off and it will leave the bib part perfect as well since there is a tiny gap between it and the lettering. Cool thing about plasti dip is if you don't like the end result, peel it all off and try again or do something different! I ended up removing mine from the door eventually and using bedliner to paint it. Not a big fan of plasti dip myself.

Thanks guys for the tips, I'll give the tooth pick a shot. I'm doing Plat Dip since I'm not sure if I'll like it. If I like it I will probably pull the letters and paint the bib with the body paint.

Just do 4-5 solid coats on the entire thing and just pick at the edge of each letter and they should each come off as one piece. This stuff is pretty cool how it works. :rockon:

With as easy as it is to remove it makes me wonder how it doesn't just come off on its own...

I had ordered it on Amazon since I couldn't find it locally, its taking a week even though I thought I bought it with Prime. I got impatient and went on Pepboys website and saw it was available next day for local pick up. As soon as I hit order it showed up as available for pick up, I'm guessing I was looking the wrong area? They only had the VHT or some other brand that had less favorable reviews. I'll give it a shot tonight, but with the weather I'll probably have to wait until tomorrow to pick at it.

When I dipped my emblem the first time, I screwed it up and had to peel it off. I used a toothpick to lift up the edges and corners. From there it peeled off quite easy.

I dipped my front grill piece, side "Limited" emblems and the rear piece like yours and none of it has peeled off yet. And if it does at some point, I will just redo it. My buddy has had some peel off but that was on wheels and he was doing it to hide some corrosion so I'm sure that didn't help secure it. I would suggest to heat up the can a little before spraying, helps keep the consistency good and apply evenly. I usually just run it under hot water for a min or 2 before applying. Good luck!

It's amazing how well it stays on. I have had a couple of scuffs, so have touched up a few spots (mostly on the rear bumper). I used a small sponge brush, sprayed a bit of plastidip onto cardboard and "painted" the dip on the spots to touch it up. I've had my dip on since summer of 2014.

VHT.... I believe that is nightshades paint and NOT plastidip. I would only use plastidip.... You should be able to get it at your local Lowes or Home Depot.

I have a 2013, so there is a chrome strip about an inch wide that runs from one side to the other, just below the liftgate on the bumper....

No need to scuff anything up.... make sure it is clean and dry, run some rubbing alcohol over the places you are going to dip.... Go to dipyourcar.com and watch their videos. Do the same with youtube.

Don't forget to wipe the areas down with alcohol where you want the plasti dip to stay. Wax on your finish will make, in this case, you letter's easy to peal off.

Did my badges after watching a youtube video of a guy and his tacoma... it is really that easy.
