This is always interesting when I read things like the GC having a "much nicer interior" as the valences suck in the GC and the dash doesn't flow IMO - I'm coming from Audi's and a single VW. The Audi's interior while better than my 4R absolutely destroys the GC interior regardless of doo-dads. The GC has a build quality closer to my sisters Kia or my lil bro's Suby (not bashing Kia of course).
This is my first Toyota ever and I am by no means a Toyota loyalist, but I'm starting to think that there are lots of Jeep loyalist lurking around here because stating that a Chrysler interior is 'nice' or high quality just doesn't add up. It'll be interesting to see my 4R interior in about 5 years vs a 2013 GC interior.
Anyway, that being said, people like what they like and that's that. If you like the Jeep go for it.

My previous vehicle is a 2005 JGC Hemi Limited and I just got through making this choice. My wife and I test drove new JGC's and then test drove the 4Runner, after the testing the 4Runner the choice was simple. While my base 4x4 SR5 doesn't have some of the extra features of the Jeep, the build quality alone is leeps and bounds better. The interior fit and finish can't be beat. The engines seemed comparable in acceleration, and having the extra torque to tow our boat was a plus (along with standard hitch receiver; no tow package bs).
We traded my wife's Sorento which she loved on the 4Runner and the reason they can get away with slightly less quality fit and finish is because of the utter bargain they offer. Her Sorento with backup cam, alloys, heated seats, bluetooth, third row, etc. was $22k and gave us an honest 28-30 mpg highway.

I have not driven a 5th gen yet. I thought about trading now but would like to wait to see what Toyota does with the 2014 4Runner.

After owning two Grand Cherokees over the last 10 years and driving a combined total of nearly 500k miles, I have to say that I am extremely happy with my 4Runner.
The Jeeps were good vehicles and served me well, but the maintenance was a little more than I would have preferred. Especially the front differential rebuilds every few years.
The second Grand that I had was the Overland model with all the bells and whistles, big mistake, all that stuff went haywire at one time or another. The automatic HVAC was especially bad as well as the rain sense wipers, adjustable pedals, tire pressure sensors, window lifts, door lock solenoids, power steering pump, exhaust manifold bolts, front wheel bearings and cv axles. Just to list a few of the issues that I had over the years.
The 4.7 engines and 545RFE transmissions were excellent and never gave me any trouble.
I have had my 4Runner for 9 months and 29k miles now and have had no problems at all so far.

After reading all these posts I'd say everyone agrees that you should get the T4R over the JGC. I failed to mention earlier that I did own a 95 JGC Laredo V8 5.2L (318cid) all time AWD. Yes the truck was a beast and fun to drive. The only thing was I only owned it for 2 years because of all the electrical gremlins I encountered in such a short time of ownership.
Went to look at a new 97 T4R and guess what, I still own the 97 (171,000 miles) and my daughter now drives it. That's the main reason when shopping for a new SUV I got my 11 SR5. I figure if the other 4Runner has lasted this long, my 11 should serve me just as well?

I test drove a 2011 JGC with the V6, I went back and forth for months between it and the 4runner, I preferred the higher seating position of the 4 runner and the body on frame design. I am planning on having this car 20 years and figured toyota was a better bet. as far as interiors, they both have things I liked and disliked, but I preferred the 4runners. the only things I wish I could change about the 4runner are the stereo is not that great, the nose dive under breaking, and I wish it had a center differential, but overall, I have been very satisfied with this truck.

Any change HID lights will be available on the 2014 or should I quit dragging it out and just get a 2013?
I've been waiting and praying that Toyota releases a factory HID for the 4R but it's looking dismal. Even Ford did this with their F150s! For a vehicle that costs as much as these, it's hard to believe it's not even an option. Stuck with getting bent over in the aftermarket realm - Probably $2,000 for us up in Canada, all said and done.
I currently own a 4th gen. it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is a 2003 Sport Edition v6. It has been very very reliable and just all around great. It is my wife's daily driver and has been there with us as our family has gone from just us to 2 to us 4 and has never felt small even when it has been packed full on long trips.
That said I am in the market for a newer one and went and test drove a 2013 sr5 and I have to say I also really like it. In fact it would already be in my garage if the dealer actually wanted to sell cars.
