4runner TRD Pro

I was watching cars.com like a hawk everyday. When a pro is on its way to a dealer it automatically gets posted on cars.com in advance usually. Sometimes those pros posted on cars.com are pros someone ordered already and sometimes not. This is how i got mine quickly.

I got lucky and called around and guy calls me back in 1/2 hr and said one inbound at MSRP do you want it? I drove down and left a deposit 1 hr later. You won't believe how many dealers I called:

1. wanted a 5k mark up
2. said couldn't place an order
3. said we have one coming in but is spoken for

I called/went to at least 10 dealers around me and one in Reno. I think it's luck sometimes. Wait list be damned? I was on a wait list and dealer calls me back and says can't order and all spoken for and good luck on your search.

The used prices are even more insane on AutoTrader. Asking over MSRP for 3-15k miles on em, up to 47K. Mind boggling. Guess I should feel privileged to of paid a bit under MSRP. LOL. Makes no sense to me.

Well you can walk in the dealer and take it for a spin and actually see the used one. You can't walk in a dealer and take the new one for a spin. Supply and demand. Some people are impatient and have to have things NOW.

Bad timing for me, have 3 weeks before I leave for Canada on a bear hunt with my dad, and never know how many more of these he has in him. So need to savor that. Also have some other urgent medical issues with the woman etc....so this is no time for me to be flying to other states to wheel and deal on a rig and road trip back.

Guess its just bummer I live in LA where everyone wants above sticker price. A few dealers told me they only get 2 a year, and they will be sold above sticker because they can and have buyers ahead of time...so that my only option is a Trail. That is what TWO dealers said, that a TRD Pro is not an option unless I want to pay $5k over and wait until next years model and be the first in line hoping to get it.

If anyone is in LA/OC and happens to know where a Pro is that the dealer will not bend you over a barrel please contact me....

I went home and emailed all those dealers and each emailed me back saying sorry, it was ordered and spoken for. The next day I got a call from one of them telling me I could have it (I believe it was $100 under sticker) if I wanted it. I had the truck in my driveway within two weeks of deciding I wanted one. I say this because LA to Houston is no drive so you may have better luck including the area in your search.

EDIT: I am sorry, I see now that when you say LA you mean Los Angeles. My apologies. When we say LA we mean Louisiana. Sorry. Good luck to you.

That is a great price in CA Trail premium no less. I was quoted 39k+ up here. But am eagerly waiting for my TRD pro to arrive next month. I would jump on it if you can't find a Pro and still want a 4runner.

It is NO KDSS...that might be why it seems a good deal...KDSS would bump it into the $39k range easily. without KDSS still a good deal?

I will cross my fingers for a Pro...but at least became friendly with one dealer who is cool enough to try to bargain with me, the others are idiots. Sending me links for 2 wheel drive 4runners when I asked for a TRD Pro....

i do want a 4runner...want reliability, rear locker, off road parts available down the road when warranty runs out. what other options are out there ? ruled out the Jeep Grand Cherokee based off reliability issues.....selling my Rubicon its gnarly off road but on road getting to be a pain on long drives and mpg is horrendous...

Is that a typo of $39,760? Because that is the price barrier I'm stuck at for a TEP with a $42,200 MSRP. PM if you want to hand off that deal [emoji4]. I'd love to save another $2k...

sticker is only $39 somthing on this one...not $42... No KDSS

Hopefully they wont make you pay for the 10k oil change, they might do that. They goad you into thinking they're comp'ing you an oil change.

The owners manual does states that if you: drive often in dusty conditions; or frequent cold starts in <32 degrees F, it is recommended that you change oil every 5k miles. My service advisor gave me the choice to pay now or later.

No worries...for my 10K service I will either get Motul or Mobile 1.

If it's a Rubicon I wouldn't worry about selling it because there will always be a buyer. I sold mine faster than I could get a TRD Pro but fortunately, I worked with the buyer and he let me keep it for 3 weeks until my 4Runner arrived.

Yea it will sell whenever...was just nice that the first folks to look at it wanted it, and they were fantastic people I really liked. So many Craigslist folks are a Jerry Springer hassle. They have time, so are super flexible. So I was hoping to find one before I left for bear hunt...but not looking like it will happen...couldnt be easy hah.

I will be taking a bath with my Rubicon though, because I thought I was gonna keep it forever, just dropped a brand new custom tranny, on top of all other sorts of mods and upkeep I just did...so it will sell, but I am losing a ton of money. If I kept it stock I would have been better off!

Here in CA, I've learned not to trust dealer listings. They usually leave them up even if they have been sold or spoken for. I've called when I've seen a new listing, get my hopes up, only to have them tell me and it was told no longer available or already sold to a buyer. I've seen them leave the listing up for weeks after I've called them.

In just a few days I learned you cannot trust cars.com, Edmunds, or dealer websites. Every TRD on cars.com/edmunds and cross checking their dealer site to confirm a TRD, upon contacting them it is taken. That includes a super long shot in Indiana, PA...which I grew up hunting there and it is the boonies, and I would suspect many people back in Western PA are too practical to buy a TRD, as in not going for the pretty gingerbread stuff with their hard earned money. Since i am flying to Pitt in a few weeks to grab dad and drive to Canada for the hunt, I thought maybe I would get lucky in Indiana, PA..nope and even they are sticking to sticker price hah AND it is taken but they are leaving it on website. Heck my parents STILL get the lowest base model of any car or truck they buy and special order just the minimal options they want, and not because they cannot afford it. They are just strictly practical about everything. But someone in Indiana PA is hot on a TRD but its still on their website and cars.com..

Also a warning for those of you searching like me....you have to put your info in to get the price quote or availability check, some dealers flood your inbox with a bunch of vehicles you wont wont and ring the phone off the hook...to include last night I checked with the two NoCa dealers, and BOTH of them had internet sales people call me AFTER 9pm...but neither of them knew any info on the TRDs....

I cannot go to Alabama anytime soon, I would need to grab one within a days drive to CA if its in the next two weeks....or wait until after the bear hunt so sometime in June...but I do have a retreat in St. Paul MN mid June if one pops up there, I would drive it home after hah..
