4th Gen Exhaust Pipe

Does anybody know why the 4th gen runners have the exhaust pipe go out the back instead of on the side?

I hate riding with my back window down because I think carbon monoxide is creeping in my ride....not to mention the sulfur smell.

I'm thinking about turning the pipe out to the side.

I think the rear exit for the exhaust is just a style choice. Seems like Toyota has changed almost everything to this.

I can't see a reason not to divert it to the side if you'd like it that way.

Carbon monoxide probably won't be an issue in most cases because modern vehicles with oxygen sensors and temperature sensors and sophisticated engine computers do such a good job of combustion that they don't produce much.

That's very true... and if I remember correctly, the 4Runner engine is a LEV, which emits even less than normal.
 
When I replaced my stock muff with a Flowmaster I had the shop cut out the resonator and add a turned out crome (bling) tip to the side.

how does that flowmaster sound? Does it drone on the highway? Did it affect your fuel mileage?

Any way you could post up a sound clip?

The catalytic convertor also pulls most of the CO out.

There's LOADS of carbon monoxide in gas burning engine exhaust!! And carbon monoxide is ODORLESS and colorless, which is why people die every year from defective furnaces and gas/kerosene heaters. If you have windows down and the vehicle is outside and moving, there is almost NO chance you'll die or get sick from the carbon monoxide, it will be diluted by fresh air. But don't leave it running indoors, like a garage(you probably know this , but it's worth mentioning).

If you have a "sick" car ( you drive the car and feel
nauseous ) it's probably an exhaust leak, and the car is recirculating air. I have been in old cars like this. Bleah, roll the window down!!

That's exactly why modern vehicles have sophisticated emissions systems. If you ever did a gas analysis of your engine's exhaust gases, you'd realize that the CO is a very small amount... most likely in the single digits parts per million.

If someone tried to commit suicide by locking themselves in the garage with a running vehicle, they'd probably run out of gas before they died of CO poisoning, if it were a modern LEV or ULEV.
 
Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion. Too much carbon fuel for the available amount of oxygen. Modern vehicles avoid this condition to improve mileage and decrease emissions. They typically do a great job, and there are stories of unsuccessful suicide attempts by folks who try to off themselves by sitting in a running vehicle in a closed garage. All they get is a headache.

But if something goes wrong with a vehicle or if the vehicle consumes almost all of the available oxygen, you may have real problems. And I suspect that more CO is produced when vehicles first start up.

There is another problem with CO, though. Exposure to fairly small amounts can eventually accumulate to something significant because CO bonds much better (something like 20 times better) to hemoglobin in the blood than does oxygen. It comes out of the blood very slowly, unless you have access to a hyperbaric chamber.

So it pays to be very careful, even though the hazard from BBQs and kerosene heaters and malfunctioning furnaces and other sources is probably greater. Cars, at least, have oxygen sensors and will complain if there's too much incomplete combustion.

As for the earlier topic, I suspect that a good job of diverting the exhaust pipe out of the side of a 4Runner would improve the CO problem in comparison to the existing rear-exit approach.
 
When I have the back window down, and I get on the gas, I can smell a strong sulfur smell. That can't be good for you. I know there is a TSB for it, but my VIN falls slightly out of range, and I don't really trust the toyota dealers. I guess if I turn the pipe out I won't really smell it as much.

Upon cold start-up, vehicles are in "open loop", which means they are not running with sensor input, but rather by a set of fixed-value parameters built into the control module.

In other words, once the vehicle warms up and goes into closed loop operation, it produces far less emissions than it did when in open loop.

That's the reason that your local inspection station waits until your car reaches full operating temperature before testing the tailpipe emissions.
