Help!!!! Does anyone know if a 4th gen 2wd has an independent suspension or not? I'm trying to put bilstein 5100s on by myself but I know nothing of independent suspension

I absolutely love the ome 885 coils (amazon) and bilstein 5100 combo on the front end of my 04 v6 runner. I would suggest going to the second highest level on the bilsteins as the top level was too much recoil and was kinda rough on the spine...lol

As for your rear suspension...its a tough call because many posts ive read show different people with the same stuff get different lift heights due to oem or stock springs and shocks which are shot and therefore sagging.

What I did in the rear is order a set of procomp fj lift coils (amazon) to go with the bilstein 5100 rear shocks. the lift ended up really stable and leveled everything within 1/4" to 1/2" variance in height from the ground up in height all the way around. I mostly did this because I carry a good amount of weight in the rear with my eclipse 15" sub woofer and box approx. 75lbs and supplies when traveling/wheeling with the grandkids. I am "considering" a 1" spacer in the rear to compensate for the times I may carry (extra) loads but we shall see. Its holding up well as is. The stock fj coils you mentioned in the rear (may not) be enough even with the coil spring spacers to level out your ride. You may be very close though. The procomp fj coils I got from amazon was priced well and worked great for my needs. I am cheap like that! lol But I wanted something that would be good on and off road without sacrificing thousands on a highly priced lift kit which although is much better in my opinion...just too expensive for me. Amazon became my best friend for a while...lol I prolly have roughly $600 to $800 invested in the DIY (amazon) lift I did including the 5100 bilsteins and coil springs front and back.

Did you install your lift yourself? We tried installing the fronts yesterday, got the passenger side fine, but now I think since that side is lifted already, we can't get that side to compress enough to be able to fit the shock in the LCA. FWIW, we don't have assembled coilovers.

Our next approach is to have a shop assemble the coilovers, then try putting that on. It should fit that way.

Yes I did it myself with a jack and jackstands like the thread says. be sure to use a second jackstand diagonally on the frame in the rear. it helps keep the frame from twisting too much so you can get more clearance to work on the front. Also you may need to use a pry bar on your lower control arm to get the strut in place in the lower arm. the original thread will show you exactly where to insert your pry bar. I used big ass screwdriver I call BETSY to do it. keep us posted! Would love to see the finished product! alohas for now!

More than likely the bushings and the cam bolts have frozen up and it won't flex as far. I had that issue my first time. They will go in easier assembled. You could try that.

Yeah, that's what I think we're gonna end up doing. Gonna find a shop to assemble it, and try it again.

I just had a local guy offer me 2013 "stock" front fj coilovers and rear shocks. Does that even make sense? Will they fit my 4th gen?

OKay, I just bought my 4runner and joined the forum. There is so much info to read through and this seemed like the best thread to ask on. I will do some more "light reading" to understand if that's what I want.

He claimed he didn't have springs just the coilovers and rear shocks and that's what threw me off since this thread just mentions fj springs and shocks to help get a small lift. I have never been on a forum before so my searching skills are very limited as well so if you could point me in the right direction that would be helpful.

I think I will get them then. He said he would give them to me for $30. I may have found springs on the FJ forum that I could put with them. Do you think I will have to trim anything or change the UCA to make the shocks work from the 2013 FJs?

I think the lower shock bushing needs to be changed as it is bigger. Don't quote me on that, someone will speak up I'm sure. For $30 I'd definitely run with it and then find coils or buy aftermarket ones and change bushing if needed. Should be pretty easy overall.

Just got a new to me v8 4wd limited and I took it out on the beach, looks like the tire rubbed the control arm a little while we were out. Completely stock with some road going Michelin tires. <65k miles and also has a faint steering wheel shimmy around 75mph.

Any ideas why?

Aside from the occasional jeep trail for car camping and/or getting to a trail head with my dirt bike my T4R spends most of its time on the pavement.

That being said, I need some new tires and was hoping to get 265/70/17s(or any similar sized tire) on there after I add the Daystar 1" kit.

Am I on the right track and would I be missing out in not adding FJ coils?

Can someone let me know if a 285/75/r16 tire would fit on my truck, or what mods are needed? I have FJ coils f/r, 5100 shocks set at 1.75" and a daystar 1.5" in the back. My wheels will be 16x8 -10mm offset.

The rear tires should fit ok without much modifications (maybe to the mud flaps) but the front may need some alterations due to rubbing at full range turns. I'm running ome 885s and bilsteins in the front and I did a body lift just to be safe and no body mount chop was needed to clear tires at full turns. Just trimmed the fat off of the front fender liners.

Hi there! The 265/70/17 should fit no problem after your spacer lift. The FJ coils will give you a little bit more clearance if you need it. When I got my 4th gen it had 265/65/17 on sport rims and ran like that on stock height suspension for a few years. The difference in size from these options are minimal...maybe 1/2" or so in height. But the FJ thread in here is a great tool to search through if your considering your lift options. Happy hunting my friend!
