4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

I had them swap them to the new Wheels. I am typically (Tacoma) used to seeing the tire pressure dash light if something is going on with the TPMS. It has only happened in an aggressive turning maneuver.

I just figure if there is a barking alert I should figure out the cause. Thanks guys!!

i get this every now and then too. double beep sometimes making a sharp turn if i clip the curb or a bump or something. didn't notice any lights for tpms but i figured that's what it is. im also running aftermarket wheels

Traction control. Hit it hard enough and it'll blink the lights and throttle you back too. I did it often until I broke an abs sensor and lost Trac. Lol

Is it the $909 Toytec lift that the coilovers aren't adjustable? Would those be a better option than just getting springs and regular bilstein shocks? Kind of worried about them not being able to be adjusted or repaired if anything were to happen. Also I'm assuming the coilovers provide better ride quality, but any input would be helpful.

+1 Had a similar issue after going bigger/beefier on my Tundra.

Thought these might be helpful if added to OP

I'm looking at the Toytec Ultimate lift with the HD coils in the rear for the roof toop tent option too.

Thats my plan.

You can go with the Ultimate, or the BOSS for a few more dollars, or the Icon Stage One for a few hundred more. The Ultimate is 5100's front and rear, but Toytec includes extended-length 5100's for the rear to pair with the 2" lift coils (Standard-length 5100's are for 1" rear lift).

Boss is Toytec's inhouse brand shocks paired with Eibach coils in front. The story is they wanted to build a kit they thought would be better than the Ultimate 5100 kit, so they put stronger shocks in the Boss kit, supposedly more wheel travel, they are rebuildable, 5100's are not.

Then you have Icon Stage One which from what I read is a step above, but a few hundred dollars more. Not a bad deal at all, but I opted for the Boss kit to save a few hundred and put rear airbags in for towing.

Also, the extra money saved could go to extended rear brake lines and the brake flush, as noted in the OP. Installing the Boss kit I disconnected the rear brakeline bracket, reinstalling at full droop (WITHOUT THE REAR SWAY BAR INSTALLED) the brake lines were so stretched out I couldn't get the bracket back in until I jacked up the axle.

If you keep the OEM rear swaybar in brakeline extensions probably aren't needed. For me, because I ditched the rear swaybar I'll have to put extended brake lines in or fab a brakeline extender. Possibly an ABS wire extender also.

I'm sure this is posted somewhere although there are so many posts that it's hard to go through them.

2wd 2006 4.0L. I've got the Daystar spacer lift installed but my front end is still quite a bit lower then my rear. I'm thinking about going with the Bilsteins and setting them at the .85" setting.

Any issues that I may run into? Any other suggestions?

I am confused and I am hoping that you can help me out. Over the last couple of months I have noticed more than acceptable lateral (right to left) roll or bouncing/roughness. It looks like my right rear shock is leaking but when I went to replace it it had the same amount of compression ad rebound as the new shock. The new shock is off of a 2014 fj cruiser but its basically the same thing.

Could it still be bad and I judt don't know what I'm doing? I out the d one back on bc I didn't want to use the fj shock if I could help it. Which now that I write this I feel a little stupid for not doing.

What else cod cause right to left roughness?

So I have OME 885s in the front and FJ/Daystar 1.5" in the back. I just got done with a roadtrip, hate the Daystar in the back. It's way too bouncy. But I was loaded up with maybe 150lbs of gear in the back, and it came down in height. I don't want that.

So, I can go 895, but I hear from a friend that'll come down a bit with weight. Should I consider the 896 instead?

Quick refresher

Hey guys, new to the forum and first wanted to thank you all for all the info and the links for FAQ suspension starters.

My 2006 4Runner Limited rear XREAS shock has rusted out and have a super spongy/loud metal scraping ride these days. (Hopefully I was able to attach the photo). I originally assumed it was the brake pads so when I pulled off the tire this is what I found. Also will need some new shoes since the tread is almost done so hopefully I can get some suggestions on new shoes with the kit I listed below.

After reading over a ton of the material I have decided to replace the XREAS for cost as well as ease of replacement down the road.

I've decided to go with this kit:
https://bilsteinlifts.com/shop/toyo...09/fj-cruiser4runner-ultimate-3-lift-package/

I opted for the HD coils since I eventually do want to add a bumper, have kids, and lots of stuff to transport quite often.

Is there anything else I need to be aware of or look out for? Eventually when I get some extra cash I plan on getting a new set of UCA's. I didn't notice anything about having to extend any lines (steering, brakes, etc.) so I'm assuming that it's pretty much bolt on with the exception of the re-alignment.

Again thanks ahead of time ladies and gentlemen for all the info. :thumb3:

xreas ---> bilstein/fj questions

Im about to pull the trigger on swapping some adjustable bilstein 5100s and fj springs for the Xreas on my 2006 4wd sport...However...I dont really know anything about suspension and theres a few things i'm still unclear on.

- Mainly Im confused about the role/necessity of spacers. Are the spacers unnecessary with the adjustable 5100's? I just want the truck level so I plan on setting the front shock to the .85 setting. Do the FJ springs only come in one length and that is why the spacers are necessary?

-Can I just buy new OEM FJ springs rather than messing around finding used ones?

-What sorts of random things will need to be adjusted after lifting a truck? Tire camber? Headlight angle? UCA? others?

Thanks so much for any info!

Cheers

I have read all over this forum for about 2.5 months now (pre and post buy). I have leveled my truck with Tacoma springs and 4600's front and back. I want to upgrade the tires but i don't have too much clearance between my UCA and my tires currently, I have read about guys upgrading to aftermarket UCA's but that seemed related to alignment. Are UCA's necessary for bigger tires? or do i need offset rims now? Was hoping to go to 275 or 285's. Thanks

P.s. Sorry not enough posts for a grown up thread

Do not put spacers on the Bilsteins, just adjust the ring up to your desired lift. FJ coils with shocks set at. 85 should put you level. Yes you can buy new ones. Junk yard may have them to.
You will need an alignment after the lift and got should be all set to go.

Wheel spacers or offset rims will help you go with bigger tires, but can lead to it rubbing too. Uca's do provide slightly more clearance but are not necessary unless lifted above 3".

Thanks for the reply! Hoping to run 285s but I think 275s may be more realistic with stock rims according to the first post of this sticky.

If you are only looking for the height you could go 255's. All the height but skinnier. Fit stock rims great.

Thoughts On The Rough Country Lift Kit

Hello fellow 4Runner peeps,

I've been researching and trying to figure out what the best option is on doing a 3/2 lift for my 2006 V8 Limited without going into deep debt. I narrowed it down to the Rough Country 3" lift kit for $249. 3in Suspension Lift Kit for 03-09 Toyota 4wd 4-Runners [760.20A] | Rough Country Suspension Systems®
With all of the reading I've done on this site for months now, I never hear of anyone suggesting or recommending this Rough Country lift kit. Is this not a good kit and should I stay away from it or does anyone here have this kit on their 4Runner or have used this one in the past that has any feedback to share. I am considering using the 5100's for the front and rear since I have read many reviews that are positive, but would like to save money if possible, but don't want to install cheap made upgrades on my 4Runner that I will regret later.
Thanks for any feedback and opinions!

Only negative I've heard of rough country is that the rear shocks are... Well, rough. BUT! I have a thread labeled "Bilstein problems" and I personally will never buy another bilstein product or endorse it. I find the rear Bilsteins to be rough and make the ass end hop, jump and skip all over the place. FJ coils and daystar spacer. I've destroyed several Bilsteins.

So I understand that I dont need spacers for the specific setup that I am going with but say, hypothetically, I was running the adjustable bilsteins at their longest length....then I would need spacers in just the back to keep things level, correct? OR, if I got the non adjustable bilsteins in the front, then I would need to add or remove spacers to acheive the same results that you would otherwise get from adjusting the shock?

Also, my local toyota deal just priced a new pair of FJ springs at $650 after tax. that seems absurd...whats going on here?

You are correct. Or you can go full lift springs front and/or rear and not need spacers or to move bilstein perch up.
Stealership! Screw that! You can buy lift coils front and rear for ~$400! I got my FJ coils from scrap yard for $50 with spring isolators.
