5th gen 4Runner steering wheel in 4th gen fully working!!

How do you like that piano black wheel, quality-wise? I’ve been considering getting one of those for awhile now, or the other version they offer that looks like black/gray wood grain. Since my SR5 doesn’t have any steering wheel controls at all, I unfortunately can’t use these newer style wheels, mainly because I’d hate having non functional buttons.

I really like it and got the sport version with the indentions and bumps. that help alot off road. but the smooth parts take a little getting used to. the wheel is awesome quality and where the old trim attached i had to file it down a little bit under the steering wheel

But the bulbs I use are from superbrightleds.com and they are the t4 wedge style. I also retained the factory ground pin but ran a 12 volt positive line from my cig outlet for power

This is seriously awesome. My only hesitation here is the airbag recall.

Airbag recall is passenger side only. There is no recall for the DS airbag that I am aware of.

Yes it does! The displays are the same size its just a film that has to be replaced and then the included wire loom with bulbs installed. It also includes the film for the odometer display.

FWIW it looks like 2010 and up 4runners and 2014 and up Tundras may have similar wheels to the 2016 Tacoma. I want to do this mod so bad, I hate the factory wheel so much :lol:

Yeah I am able to do the 4runner wheels haha. I haven't looked into the tundra ones though. I'm sure its probably similar.

First post, hopefully this is not too old to ask about.

To the OP if they're still around, or anyone with first hand knowledge--
Did this 5th gen wheel insert and mate properly with the original 4th gen clockspring? Or via modification to the clockspring?

The 4th gen steering wheels have one tooth/tang on opposite sides of the aluminum wheel shaft where it inserts into the clock spring, so a total of two teeth to mate with the clockspring.

From what I can find/see, all newer style Toyota wheels have a different design, using a pair of (wider) parallel teeth on each side, and those mate with a different clockspring design. So essentially four teeth and they look to not extend down the entire aluminum neck of the steering wheel.

I found this pic on a Tacoma forum that demonstrates the difference I'm seeing.

I'm looking to swap my wheel with something else and this is the last thing I'm trying to figure out.

I've removed my wheel to confirm I have the two spline design.
(2006 4.0 Sport Edition 4WD)

They do mate right up to our steering column without issue. I've had multiple steering wheels and they were all the same.

I suspect the largest outer diameter of the newer steering wheel shafts is actually the same size or a hair smaller than the non-toothed diameter of the older ones. Thus the newer wheels fit into the older clock springs but the teeth do not really engage to turn the clockspring.
Looks likes it wouldn't matter since the clockspring plug sticks through and is captured by the steering wheel and that would turn it just fine.

At this point I only do it if I have access to the vehicle its going on. Reason being is there are so many variables per vehicle that its impossible to wire things all the same way.
