thanks for the detail. I have 115k on my 2014 and I will attack the plugs in April when I do the next oil change.

You guys are so thoughtful and helpful ---- really appreciate everybody sharing how they have done work so the rest of us have confidence and a plan to attack.
 
I’ve had this thread saved since day one :thumb3: and I’m finally ready and have enough miles to change my plugs!

Question-
It looks like my 2010 calls different plugs than the later models... are they all interchangeable, are the later ones better for whatever reason, or should I just use what Toyota originally spec’d?

Not sure why the heat ranges are all over the place, but my 2015 Trail calls for heat range of 16. DENSO SK16HR11. Using significantly different hear range plugs may cause issues in the long run for somebody, especially since going up or down is different for different brands. On our air cooled bikes, we'd change the plugs based on season and riding locations.

Thank you and Gracie for saving me a few hundred dollars- which I happily used to buy a Sprint Booster with instead!!!!
 
Life intervenes and I was delayed about 20K miles from replacing the spark plugs. 2014 SR5 is now at 260.5K miles. Most of the old plugs were tough to get out, like it took major force. When I looked at the plugs, it almost looked like they had swelled some and the tips had worn significantly. Engine had never skipped a beat. New plugs went in east with the anti-seize on them.

The last image shows EMBLE stamped on the metal shell of the old plug. Are these the words, "ASSEMBLED IN THE US WITH FOREIGN CONTENT? The old plug ceramic insulator appears to be shorter than the new plugs. In both images the ground electrode chip appears different. Are the new plugs genuine Denso? These subtle differences may indicate counterfeit spark plugs. The following links show how to identify counterfeit parts. I think most of the SK20HR11 plugs listed on Amazon are obviously counterfeit.

I pulled mine early because I was concerned with seizing more than wear.
I did buy my replacements from Amazon but made sure the seller was Amazon instead of third party.

Yes

Whether they were counterfeit is a moot point now, as they are no longer in the engine and they went 140K miles. The ones in the pics were the two worst for wear.

I mistyped a word in my post. I should have asked, "Are the NEW plugs genuine Denso?' The old plugs were genuine. I was noting significant differences between the new spark plug and the old genuine plug. Your thumb covers the metal case and ceramic of the new plug, so I cannot be certain if the new spark plugs are genuine. Did you buy them at a Toyota Dealer?

"Fast moving SC20HR11 Iridium Spark Plug superseded with SC16HR11

Part Number SC20HR11 will be phased out. Due to OE requirements all demand will continue to the existing SC16HR11.

In the past only the 2014 Aygo/108/C1 and Yaris had 16 heat range, however going forward all other engines will move from SC20HR11 to the SC16HR11 Spark Plug. For Aftermarket it is safest to switch gradually to SC16HR11 for the whole connected car parc and sell out the current stock
of SC20HR11. We will supersede SC20HR11 with SC16HR11 automatically in terms of ordering and delivery, following Toyota’s decision. Please refer to the DENSO Spark Plug catalogue for the correct crossing.

Due to OE requirements DENSO has to change the heat range from 20 to 16. These connected applications are mainly Toyota engines. The OE car manufacturer has already switched to SC16HR11 for newly manufactured vehicles. The Aftermarket will follow this consequently.

The level of heat range is connected to low or high speed driving. The initial choice for the right heat range is a result of expectations towards average use of the engine. After a few years of experience with this engine, the manufacturer decided to lower the heat range.

In all digital catalogues like TecDoc and MAM, the change will take effect in June 2017.

From June 2017 onwards we will automatically supersede SC20HR11 with SC16HR11. This will ensure delivery of the correct Spark Plug in case you order the old reference.

It doesn't say, but I think the higher heat range is better for slow speed sustained driving and the lower heat range for more highway applications.
