5vz-fe Removal

Alright guys, I really appreciate the help and good tips; I'm actually looking forward to finish the replacement now. I went and bought some extensions and swivel joint set. I will attempt to remove those bolts from the tranny tomorrow after work. As for the scratches, I got some pretty good ones today when trying to remove some of the hoses behind the engine.

pics...

The cross membrane you guys mentioned about on the Trans...is that the same as the cross bar?

If I understand your question, the crossmember is the structure bolted to the frame on both sides see pic1:
poleclimber63-albums-engine+swap...-picture27732-underside-including-tranny-cross-member-2-small-holes.jpg

this pic is looking from the front with the front dif in the foreground, the tranny cross-member is the member with 2 smaller holes facing the camera.

The second pic2 is where I inserted my block to hold the tranny in place with the engine removed. The bell housing is toward the bottom of the pic and the large bar is the front stabilizer bar which crosses under the tranny pan... the pan is towards the top of the pic.
I have lots of other pics so if you want some as a guide PM me and I'll email some.
PS, to keep all the bolts and nuts organized, I used egg containers and wrote on the carton as to there location... it helped me...

Suggestions on best way to deal with the wiring harness going down the drivers side between engine and fender? It goes back to transmission. I can get the connectors off at the transmission but can't figure out how to get these wire tie things off. Seems like they're metal and no way to Open them.

Suggestions?

I would suggest disconnecting the wiring harness at the ECU located behind the glovebox. If you have any questions, let me know.

You did it all wrong! Your suppossed to remove the body to get to the engine.:rockthrow:

Are u serious?

I've done this removal and install very similar steps in 8 hours on a 4x4. I've done at least 20 4x4 with similar method. Piece of cake!!

Maybe you're wrong on this one with all due respect.

Great writeup. Will be using this weekend.

My initial method started with Haynes manual and I tweaked and tweaked it picking the brains of Junk yard mechanics.

Many people remove the cross member. It's useless.

I'll be doing a video or pics step by step cause man I've sure seen things that make me want to offer some help.

There's something's that I do outside that some have covered cause is sure is a time saver. Reinstall definitely need a spotter that can follow direction on using a cherry picker. I have my son that we've working on 3rg gens for two years non stop. About 50 and counting. He's great help!

Thanks for the offering of advice. I'll definitely PM you if I run into any snafus. I've pulled a few engines on my mustangs, but this will be the first on a 4r for me. Thanks again!

Awesome info guys. I'll be tackling this very soon and will no doubt need some tips and tricks as it will be my first engine removal and install. Thank you for having the patience to do this write up.

Hopefully pictures to come.

enjoyed your post

I read the end of your post where you state the 4Runner you have and the mods you have done. It could be that I am not familiar with all the descriptions, but can tell me if you have a 4x4?
I am in the process of removing my engine and cannot see how to remove two of the 4 bolts that hold the thin piece of sheet metal at the bottom of the bell housing... Seems like the front drive train and other stuff is in my way from getting to the two towards the driver side of the vehicle.
Thanks

I believe you... As I take stuff off, I have to wonder how the heck I am ever going to put it back, (if I even remember where it all goes, lol)

I hydrolocked my engine yesterday, 6 days after buying a 4Runner. I bought a jdm engine and plan on swapping it as soon as it arrives. The place I bought it from is gonna send me an engine and it could be out of any 4Runner 1996-2002. What all wil I need to swap from my current engine to the new one to make it work? I would've made a new thread but I'm new here so I don't have permission. I also have a 14' Tacoma and am a member over in Tacomaworld, those guys weren't much help in the 4Runner section.

I too am in the process of swapping a '97 with a blown head gasket for a junkyard 2002. I'll be using intake manifold and throttle body from the old engine. Im told the injectors are different, sure enough looking at them they look the same but the old motor injectors have 4 little squirter holes and the '02 motor has 2 (I don't know why that matters) and just yesterday I was looking at the exhaust manifolds thinking I would use the ones on the '02, there just different enough they won't work!
good luck and let me know what kind of buzzsaw you run into!

If it is a JDM motor, it isn't from a 4Runner. You will need to change every external component over to parts from your 4Runner. You will use the JDM long block and everything else should be from your current engine. Make sure to do the timing belt and check all the seals while you are in there - they aren't as good at doing maintenance in Japan as they are here.
