60,000 mile service

So guys I have trolled the site for hours and I see lots of different threads saying one thing and another. My simple question is what services should be done to a SR5 4Runner with 60,000. I drive normal miles in normal conditions. Thanks guys to any information.

If you aren't towing, carrying loads on your luggage rack or driving in dirty, dusty conditions... Then the standard oil change, tire rotation, fluids and filter checks.
This past year i have been doing all of the above and just had all the rough service maintenance done. Glad i did as my rear differential oil was low. I had the dealer flush my transmission... They said i probably could have gone a little longer, but since you can't see the fluid in a sealed system, it was just as well.

You shouldn't have to troll for hours. Regardless, I asked this once too - and it's one of those "which tire", "which shocks" questions - you'll get answers all over the place ... from guys who change everything every 30k to guys who say "go by the book". GL

I'll have to look in the manual, but if you have yours it has all the service recommendations in it. For all my vehicles I tend to:

check all fluids
check brake pads and rotors
check throttle body to see if it needs a cleaning, clean if it does look grimy
clean MAF sensor (takes a few seconds so why not)
inspect suspension points like CVs, LBJs, OTRs, etc, for any signs of burst boots and leaking grease
inspect battery terminals for signs of corrosion

I would do the following:
Engine oil and oil filter change
Check front and rear brake pads
Rotate tires
Grease drive shaft area with zerks (~4)
Engine filter change
Cabin filter change
Front and rear differential fluid change
Transfer case oil fluid change
Transmission fluid drain and fill
For me only (I would drain and fill coolant).
Check serpentine belt for cracks (but not likely since the belt is typically good well beyond 100K miles).

with normal driving I would change the diff/transmission fluids. service the brakes , check tires/shocks/ front end alignment & components. if 5 yrs on the coolant replace. the driveshafts should be greased at the oil change intervals. and also the cabin/engine air filter should be inspected for condition. tire rotations . inspect for any corrosion on the body/frame also any leaks .

I replace the brake pads when slightly more than 50% worn..

my comment on transmission fluid change was drain and fill. toyota recommends transmission servicing @130K miles if this and if that ... @60K a simple fluid drain and fill will reveal if the fluid is still good and at the proper level or perhaps a problem .

I was not suggesting any fluid exchange/power flushing /pan drop or filter screen replacing @ 60K miles.

The obvious thing to do is to follow Toyota's recommended maintenance schedule. Unless you have strong opinions yourself or drive in unusual conditions that is a good start.

You should check your own manual but for my 5th gen (2016) the following are recommended at 60k:

- oil change
- engine & cabin air filters
- lubricate propeller shaft

plus the usual "inspect and adjust all fluid levels", "inspect brake lines and hoses" etc...

I would not do a transmission fluid change. I have done this once on a 3rd gen 4runner at 200k miles. It's easy enough, but IMO it's a waste of time and money to do it at 60k miles. I would do it as a 200k service like I did on my 3rd gen where I replaced basically everything rubber inside the engine bay - hoses, plug wires, belts, etc. along with the timing belt and transmission fluid change. But I wouldn't do it before then and you don't have a timing belt. The risk of screwing it up outweighs the benefit of changing oil that doesn't need to be changed. It's kinda like changing engine oil at 3,000 miles instead of the normal 10,000. It doesn't really do anything beneficial. But in this case it's kind of a PITA.

On our Allison 1000 automatic it does require regular filter/oil changes. Do them. Mine lasted about 85k miles with all the maintenance on time. Found the filter full of metal. . $5,000 down the drain. But at least it wasn't in the middle of a road trip like the transfer case was when it blew up.

You buy a toyota for a reason - it's not a (chevy/ford/dodge). It doesn't need constant maintenance to keep from breaking down. Basically, gas tires and oil.
