God help us all then, that thing is horrid (it'll probably be a stretched RX platform most likely since that is a unibody trash pile;) about as CUV as you can while mushroom stamping loyal SUV owners in the face.

Mushroom stamping? I've never heard of that phrase but it did make me lmao!

Back on topic, I think it's fair to say that anything we hear from the grapevine is total BS, how many people, magazines, websites, forums, or "insiders" knew about the TRD Pro before it came out? Zero! We even have a Toyota engineer on the forum and either he didn't know or kept it a secret. Needles to say, they know how to keep a secret!
 
since were all guessing and there's no solid info here's mine. The 2017 4runner is still the 5th gen and identical to the 2016. The Tacoma production moves to new plant in Mexico with its new chassis. 2018 4runner (6th gen) debuts on new Tacoma chassis made in Mexico no more 4Runner imported to the United States made in Japan. Some type of frame based vehicle will exist for other countries and Be built in Japan factory but it will not make it to the US. This will be a double edge sword. the quality will suffer for the U.S. only 4Runner but there will be more aftermarket lift kits and suspension products since it will be identical to the Tacoma.

^^^i hope they don't move production to Mexico. Being built in Japan has always been an added bonus. 4runners are so darn reliable!
 
My 2 cents (which is about this is all it's worth) - in regards to the 4Runner following the pathfinder - more than anything on this matter, toyota beat nissan to the punch of a CUV with the highlander, which now the highlander and pathfinder (along with others like the new explorer which is a CUV) are their own class. With the pathfinder moving onto "greener pastures" this puts the 4runner up with the Xterra which is a much more proper fit.

On that note - as was mentioned before, the 4Runner, Xterra and Wrangler are pretty much the only BOF true SUVs left on the market. As for that is concerned, I'm not worried about the 4Runner dying as we know it.

What does concern me (and I don't know the full details) is what everyone has said - the CAFE requirements. I'm on the same ground as most - efficiency needs to be improved on the 4Runner - DFI, 6-7 gear trans, aluminum sheet metal, etc. would all be welcome "with the times" adds that we have not seen. I would imagine that the 6th gen will be something along those lines - especially since the new wrangler is supposedly gonna go with aluminum and a 7 spd trany. I personally wouldn't mind seeing tech like in the nes NSX, Porsche spider and the like with electric assisted drives - two support motors on the front wheels and one in the back. I don't know how the specifics of these would work in say...river crossings, but I would imagine the application of independent power/torque would greatly improve handling, crawling, and (of course) efficiency.

anyways - that's my grain of salt
 
Ugh...this speculation is exactly why I'm considering getting a 5th gen now even tho I'm not exactly financially comfy. IMHO body on frame SUVs will eventually go extinct...except maybe full sizers like the Suburban, which might remain truck based to tow big loads. I think manufacturers will try and appeal to the few who actually off road their vehicles by "beefing up" certain CUVs and marketing them as good alternatives to the traditional BOF. The new Jeep Cherokee comes to mind, albeit it was unibody before.

It makes me wonder. Toyota has a LOT of SUVs in their lineup. RAV4/Highlander to appeal to the masses. Sequoia for bigger families who may need to tow. Land Cruisers for the ballers who can afford them. I wonder if Toyota can redo the 4Runner to be a more purpose built off roader with all solid axles etc. Im just thinking of how much success Jeep is having with their Wrangler. Can Toyota pull that off? Tho if they tried, I would think Toyota would just kill off the 4Runner (nooo!) and revive the FJ to be more old school FJ-like (aka: Wrangler-like). Just a thought.
 
It had more to do with CAFE standards (which is why the GX is being axed for the TX in '16 as the first wave of CAFE hits) than sales. Toyota made a few statements that sales volume didn't mean anything in regards to the FJ, it was always expected to be their little pet project more than anything.
Yeah and you can bet that if it sold as well as a wrangler and sold 120,000 units a year they would have never discontinued it. Money talks.

Toyota is already under construction building the new plant to produce the Tacoma in Mexico.They lost all the manufacturing they had at the Fremont facility in Northern California and the Texas plant is expanding to build more tundras. The 4runner started out life using the pick up truck platform it only seems smart business to combine the two again and at the same time move production to North America and get that cheap labor in Mexico,and avoid any import taxes. it's a corporate win-win win.
 
FJ was a 1 hit wonder. Thats what Toyota promised. They would make one generation. They held to that. As for the 6th gen 4runner, it will come, but it will be unibody. The 5th gen will be the last body on frame suv.

Now before everybody starts crying with me, just remember. Jeep is debating on ditching the SFA.

Toyota will extend the 5th Gen's cycle from 7 years to 8. Note that the mid-cycle refresh (2014, the 5th year of the 5th Gen) came one year later than previous generations (for the 4th gen, the refresh was in the 4th year).

The 6th Gen 4Runner will launch for the 2018 model year. It will still be body-on-frame. It will remain around the same size. No V8. Carry-over V6, but paired to a 6-speed auto. New Platinum package will be the top trim, with dynamic cruise-control, pre-collision system, etc.

Otherwise, it'll remain very similar to the 5th Gen.

I think the chance of converting it to a unibody is extremely slim. There's no reason to duplicate what already exists with the Highlander. The only thing I can think of would be to create a larger 3-row crossover that slots above the Highlander, but it would make more sense for Toyota to convert the Sequoia into that role.

More likely to end: the Venza, after one generation. This would further support keeping the 4Runner as-is. If there was a strong market for a 5-seat cross-over between the Rav4 and Highlander, they'd do a 2nd Gen Venza.

Toyota should just add low range and get Land Rover to sprinkle their magic off road capability dust on the Highlander, so it can run circles around a 4runner off road, and call it a day. Maybe call it the Highlander 4runner.

All good predictions especially the 4R being delayed a bit longer giving toyota time to assess the market. I do doubt the current V6 will carryover unchanged. It's nearing 12 years old. Toyota has been and is slowing rolling out new engines with updated tech. I'm guessing they will have to improve the mpg by using more than just a 6 spd tranny which will "maybe" add an extra 1 mpg to the hwy number.

I believe an article existed from Toyota a while back stating roughly 16 new engines or derivatives will be coming between now and 2016 spread across different models. The corolla, Lexus nx, and lexus RC-F received the first few.
 
Not as simple as supply and demand in North America. Toyota is lagging the CAFE standards with their current SUV lineup. They'll need to make efficiency changes across the board in the next few years. Perhaps this can be done with refined powertrains for the short term. However, as 2025 creeps up, bigger changes must be in order, and there may not be any room for body on frame SUVs.

Gosh I hope not! With the 4R being basically the last BOF SUV, it's got a monopoly on the market. If Toyota would invest in a new direct injection V6 and a 6 spd tranny, the mileage would be greatly improved helping cafe numbers.

I will attach a quick read based in plain language but suffice to say having a small market vehicle that does not meet CAFE standards is no big deal when you have a huge market leader than is beating the standards. Here you go:

"First, like the current 2012–16 rules, these new standards are size based. That means there’s a formula to calculate the required CAFE—within limits—for each car based on its “footprint,” which is the product of its wheelbase and track dimensions. In 2011, for example, the required CAFE mpg for the smallest car would not exceed 31.2, while even the largest car was assigned at least 24 mpg. For 2025, these car limits go up to 61.1 and 45.6. Truck mpg is calculated in similar fashion using a different formula. For 2011, the truck mpg ranged from 21.1 to 27.1. In the 2025 proposal, it spans 30.2 to 50.4 mpg. Notice that the formula has been adjusted so that the low end of the range rises less than the high end to help accommodate large trucks.

Second, because these CAFE requirements are based on size, every car company actually ends up with a different CAFE requirement, depending on the mix and size of cars and trucks that it actually sells. For every model year, each company must calculate the CAFE requirement for all models it markets and then determine the sales-weighted average for its actual mix. Therefore, a company such as General Motors, with its heavy share of large pickups and SUVs, will have a lower CAFE requirement than Suzuki, which primarily produces smallish cars and SUVs.

Third, CAFE mpg is very different from the fuel-economy-label mpg numbers on every new car. That’s because the CAFE figures are based on the original city and highway fuel-economy tests established in the Seventies, while the window-sticker numbers combine those values, along with the results of three other emissions tests, to produce mpg figures that better-match real-world driving. In general, the combined mpg on a vehicle’s label is about 20 percent lower than the CAFE mpg.

Hidden within this web of rules are a number of subtleties. For example, the nominal 54.5-mpg requirement represents a certain reduction in the tailpipe emissions of carbon dioxide. The actual mpg requirement will be more like 49.6, with the rest of the greenhouse-gas reduction coming from a change to higher-efficiency air-conditioning systems using more environmentally friendly refrigerant.

The manufacturers will also get mpg credits for adopting efficient technologies that often show no effect on the official test cycles. These include active grille shutters, electric heat pumps, stop-start systems, high-efficiency lights, and solar roof panels. The credit for such items could amount to about 3 mpg if several are used or even more if a manufacturer provides data to justify it.

Then there’s extra credit for electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles. These machines already garner very high CAFE ratings, as they use little or no gasoline, but to encourage their sales, the government will factor each sale of an electric vehicle by 2.0 in model year 2017. In other words, if you sell 10,000 electric vehicles—either battery powered or fuel cell—they will be counted as 20,000 when calculating that company’s fleet fuel economy. This factor will phase down to a multiplier of 1.5 by 2021. For plug-in hybrids, the factor will start at 1.6 in 2017 and phase down to 1.3 in 2021."

I am sooooo grateful that my government will allow me to keep making a 4Runner as long as I sell 3.7 Million smart cars powered by fairy dust and unicorn farts.

How much more of this garbage will we take?

Interesting, I hadn't realized the CAFE standards were so "Forgiving." I knew they factored by vehicle class/size; but I didn't realize they were so flexible. But my understanding was that in 2016 with the first batch of new standards, the CAFE rules were changing some from what it used to be currently to be more strict (I could be absolutely wrong about this though, it was something I have heard in passing.) [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] I still think CAFE standards are a large factor in this as many of the "Gas Guzzlers" among many brands seem to be changing/disappearing at or very close to the 2016 deadline for the first batch of CAFE standards. That in itself is too large a coincidence to be ignored, not to mention Ford betting their golden goose on Aluminum body/framed F150's close to the 2016 deadline, something that seems to be pushed by a need to meet fuel economy standards more than a desire to be more environmentally friendly. I'm not saying that its all due to CAFE standards, but they are obviously playing a large factor in shrinking vehicles down and paring off the "gas guzzlers."

Depends on what you consider "12yrs old" the platform for the 1GR-FE engine (the basic block architecture) isn't entirely different from when it was introduced in '03 to '14. But there have been significant changes in between those years, the 2010 cut-off indicating the addition of Dual VVTi to the 1GR-FE, which means new heads, design structure, ect. to support those changes.

The Corolla's engine is actually 2 variants of the 2ZR family, the "older" 2ZR-FE 1.8L 4Cyl with Dual VVTi offered since about 2010 I want to say and the "New" 2ZR-FAE 1.8L 4Cyl withDual VVTi and Valvematic (basically BMW's craptastic Valvetronic setup...) both engines are fundamentally the same, but the 2ZR-FAE has a different cylinder head, cylinder head plate (this is bolted ontop of the cylinder head has all the camshafts, which also needs to be replaced as an entire assembly if anything goes wrong), ect. The Camry is supposed to get this "wonderful" (I use that term loosely as I am worried it will have BMW's reliability than Toyota's) Valvematic technology on the 2AR-FE sometime soon as well as the CVT transmission option like the Corolla.

Most of Toyota's "new" engines are variants of existing engine design/architecture rather than say a brand new family such a "EcoBoost" or what not. GDI is something Toyota does not seem to be entirely thrilled about; not that I can blame them since most if not all GDI engines currently seem to be on the less reliable side of the spectrum right now in terms of what we expect. Granted they'll probably come out with new engines soon as their current offerings in most cases are tipping a decade old even with the minor updates they've made. I just figured I'd point that out.
