6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

Hoping for:
V8 or V6 w/ Better HP+, Fuel Econ, Turbo?
I'd like to see some of the features that are on the Highlander attached to the Limited.

Dream? 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro-Limited
 
Responding to a few comments I saw...

The 4R is not going anywhere. The 4R is extremely profitable for TMC to begin with. In so many different ways as well. It's sales #s are up 28% compared to last year! If TMC follows what they have done for 30 years it will share the same engine as the Tacoma. I am sure they will boost the power a tad as they always have done.

The FJ was not a killed off due to sales figures. They sold every one they produced and at many times had a waiting list. They sold one FJ last month. How cool would that be to own the last FJ sold in the US?

The Lexus GX is extremely profitable as well. A large percentage of parts that are used on the GX are used on other models. Meaning it drastically reduces the CPU. {Cost Per unit}. Besides, it sales #'s are up.

The thing that kinda bothers me is that Doug Murtha is now Corporate Strategy and Planning for Toyota in North America. That didn't go too well for him at Scion.

I think we will see an increase in U.S production from Japan. Considering the 1st Lexus passenger car to be produced in the U.S just happened last week.

Here are the Sept sales numbers if anyone is interested.

Toyota has been super hush hush about the future of the 4Runner and Tundra.

Either both are undergoing a big redesign, or more of the same, who knows.

There is no info out there on the 2017 4Runner, the 2017 LandCruiser has been revealed but that's the only 2017 Toyota has revealed.

But as of right now there is just no info out there on the 2017 4Runner or Tundra.

Huh?

The 2016 Land Cruiser has been revealed and is in the dealers now. It has an 8-speed transmission, new nav system, new hood, but most of the rest is carryover.

The 2017 has not been revealed.

Efficiency. There are bulletproof 6 speeds out there. 8 and 10 still have a ways to go. Reliability is more important to me but judging by the sales numbers of other vehicles having 8 speeds, efficiency is more important to those buyers.

More gears put the engine closer to the optimal RPM required to deliver the torque needed for given loading conditions. Less "bogging" down in a gear before upshifting.
 
You really need to go drive a 6speed rx350/highlander. They have the same 6 speed and a very close 3.5L GR motor. Plus the same weight. The big difference is having a 4.39:1 differential and smaller tires. Basically 4.56 gears but an extra OD gear to get good highway mpg. The extra gear gives you more range not just more shifts in the same range. So the result is that you can have both a lower 1st gear and good highway gearing. The 6speed feels a lot more powerful and delivery is significantly better with a lower gear. Internally it's practically the same thing.

High gear transmissions aren't inherently unreliable. American made automatics are inherently unreliable across the board. Even our Allison 1000 only lasted 80k miles before the 1st rebuild.

I'll take an AA80E transmission without hesitation. If it wasn't exceptionally reliable, it wouldn't be in the Land Cruiser - Toyota's, and the wolds, most reliable vehicle. I'd at least pay pay $2500 more to upgrade. It's the best way to improve performance for the $.

To put some numbers to this the 4runner 0-60 run only averages 141hp to the tires with the throttle wide open. That's not terribly efficient use of 280hp potential. If you added for example 3 more gears and kept the engine closer to peak hp such that you improved average hp output by 15%, the 0-60 time would drop from 7.8 seconds to around 6.8. Can you get that much improvement? maybe not. But you can get significant improvement in performance without giving up mpg.
 
I drove a Highlander back to back with a 4Runner TE KDSS last week. The highlander really does have a nicely matched power train with the chassis. It is responsive, quick, and efficient. The 4Runner will hustle when you ask it to, but it doesn't feel as effortless as the Highlander. That said, we'll still likely end up with a 4Runner. There is just something about driving a 4Runner that makes you feel good.

So, what's the story on the RAV? A few days ago, you sounded like a new 4R was it.
 
15 pages of this thread is a bit much for me to go through to see if anyone has mentioned how Obama's Presidential mandate of 54 MPG in all trucks/light duty utes by 2025 will affect the T4R (if at all). Given the current gas mileage of the 2016 model (17/22), Toyota isn't really on their way to making it any better unless they go the hybrid/diesel route.

State Farm supposedly inspected it over the weekend to determine if it is totaled or not. Taking a full week to give me some indication of what direction to go has me thinking that I might need to go insurance company shopping. :mad:

Yea, to find a similar mileage replacement of our 2014 Rav4 Limited with Tech Package, it would cost over $27k. State Farm requires 75% damages to total a vehicle. I'll need over $18k in damages. I'm pretty screwed if they repair it. Then I get back a vehicle I don't want (due to the excessive repairs) and I'll take a beating trading/selling it due to the damage.

I've jokingly thought about getting a billboard near the uninsured guy's house and letting everyone know that he is a dirtbag. :mad:

Yes, cousin would be accurate considering that it's built entirely on a Hilux platform... I mentioned this in this thread didn't I? Or was that one of the other half dozen or so 2017 threads there were? I genuinely cannot remember because they all sort of blend in together after a while. lol

Well, by 2025 we'll probably have already finished the 7th gen and be close to an 8th assuming they keep going. To be honest, unless light/heavy truck design changes significantly in the next decade; that mandate will probably have to be modified and/or amended because I just don't see an F150, Chevy 1500, or Tundra getting anywhere close to that gas mileage, let alone a Tacoma; even if they weren't used for hauling or towing.

Also I'm curious to see how this VW scandal affects those mandates because you know that VW isn't the only one cheating the system to make themselves look better and I have a feeling the government will be cracking down on diesels as a result of this and gasoline engines as well. This whole scandal is a result of unrealistic goals.
