Are you talking about a used GX and comparing to a new Limited T4R?

The new GX460 MSRP is $50,780 and it has a 4.6 L V8.

Either way I agree with you that the Limited T4R is overpriced. But the SR5 and Trail editions are not IMO.

Looks like a Tundra.

A lot of this is personal preference but I cannot help but note that you didn't say how much more you paid for the Land Cruiser than you would have a new 4runner?

What was the cost differential?

It was a lot. $59k for the 2-year-old Land Cruiser. A new 4Runner Limited would have been around $40-42k.

Somewhat of an OT post. Lets say the Lexus GX does soldier on with a new gen model following along with the redesigned 6th gen 4Runner in 2018 (supposedly). What might we see as an engine option in that?

New V8 ?
TT V6 ?
Same motor?

I know many folks in the auto industry have said the GX is on its way out with a new TX (7/8 passenger crossover)or similar replacing it. I find this tough to swallow being the GX and 4R are both selling very well and share the same platform making it cost effective for Toyota. The GX is strictly a moneymaker for them:)

I Just enjoy the speculation!

Between the 4Runner and Land Cruiser, price is certainly one thing and MPG is not far off in the same vein. Being able to get close to 20mpg on the highway with the 4Runner really ads up when you consider 15mpg on a Land Cruiser.

With gas less than $2/gallon, I don't care about the difference right now. Of course, gas probably won't stay this cheap.

I commute in mostly stop and go traffic into Cambridge every week day. My 4Runner got about 15.5 mpg in that commute and about 17 mpg on the highway.

My Land Cruiser is averaging 14 mpg on that same commute, so it is worse than my old 4Runner, but not by a lot. I have only done one "highway" trip with my Land Cruiser, but it involved a lot of rural two-lane highways in Vermont (lots of hills), and on that trip I got 17 mpg. So I think on an interstate I could probably get 18 mpg.

Real world combined fuel economy for the 5th Gen 4Runner seems to be around 18 mpg. I doubt I would see that on my stop-and-go commute, but let's just assume that I would and look at the numbers.

I drive about 15k miles per year. If I get 14 mpg combined, then at $2/gallon my fuel cost is $2143/year.

If I was driving a 4Runner and getting 18 mpg combined, then at $2/gallon my fuel cost is $1667/year, for savings of $476.

If gas goes back up to $4/gallon then those costs are double.

Btw, the Fast Lane Truck guys were able to get 20 mpg out of the 2016 Land Cruiser on the highway at 70 mph. That number was determined by hand (miles driven divided by gas pumped). That is pretty darn good for a truck this big and heavy.

- 3-stage turn signals
- Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA
- At least a 6 speed automatic, if not 8

I have no need for 3-stage turn signals. I definitely would like a blind spot monitor and RCTA. And I agree completely on the need for more gears.

My main point with the Tundra is that it has everything we want, interior that's very close to an LC200 or GX460, for $45k new. It's not unreasonable to think the same package could be condensed for $45k in a midsize SUV. And kinda points out that Toyota could improve the 4runner a lot without raising msrp if it were at the same profit margin as a tundra.

Don't knock it till you try it. I used to say the same thing... Now it's a feature I hate not having.

Fair enough. I didn't think I would care about a heated steering wheel but after having one during a Boston winter, I'm now in love.

I think most of us would take a land cruiser over a 4runner if price was not a issue

Gotta ask 'Why'?

I can afford either. Didn't get to the point where I could by paying for 'vapor'.

What, quantitatively, makes a LC better than a 4runner, for the cost?

Thanks

It was a lot. $59k for the 2-year-old Land Cruiser. A new 4Runner Limited would have been around $40-42k.

So you believed that the LC would give you 18k more 'utility' [an economic term that roughly translates to value].

Will it get you there, faster, safer, more comfortably? How does it give you roughly 20% better value?

I'm sincerely interested to know.

Thanks,

I enjoy it more than my 4Runner, even when my 4Runner was new.

From the tone of your post, clearly you don't think it is worth the money. That's fair. It's your money. Buy what you want. I'm not going to spend my time trying to convince you otherwise.

Will a Mercedes S-class really provide you with better utility than a 10-year-old Hyundai? No, it won't and clearly it will cost a great deal more. But I know which one I would rather drive.

Sorry, it was not my intent to 'sound like anything'.

I believe it is great that you got what you wanted and at a price that was worth it for you.

I get what you are saying about utility, and agree.

Didn't mean to offend.

Ironically - after owning an SL - I'll take a 10yr old Hyundai. Mostly because as much as I like walking I prefer to do it on my schedule not my car's.

Mrs. M1911 had a 2002 Mercedes C240. That was truly an unreliable car. Her 2010 C300, however, has been quite reliable.

Perhaps here is a better comparison for the "economic utility" argument.

A Ford F150 4x4 Supercrew (4-door) XL (base model) starts at $33K.

A Ford F150 4x4 Supercrew (4-door) Limited (top of the line) starts at $59k.

The Limited won't get you anywhere that the XL won't take you. It will probably use more gas (heavier, due to more stuff). It won't last any longer.

Nevertheless, lots of people spend the extra money to buy a Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, or Limited trim F-150. From a purely economic point of view, does that decision make sense? No, it doesn't. But this isn't a purely economic decision. Where would you rather spend your time? In a base model XL or a Limited?

If I was shopping for an F-150, I probably wouldn't go full boat to the Limited, but I would buy something above the XL, even though the "economic utility" argument doesn't support it.

IMO, the "economic utility" argument is of little utility when it comes to deciding which vehicle to buy. It is an emotional decision, not a purely logical calculation. And, yes, I have 3 degrees in engineering, and took four semesters of economics in university (many moons ago). YMMV.

well, its been discussed to death what it might be/include/whatever.

Any idea on when we can expect news? I was thinking this fall/spring 2017.

^Probably nothing until about 16-18 months from now. I would expect late/middle of 2017 with an introduction into the market around November 2017.

They could also do something like show it at the New York Auto Show in 2017 (April) and then parade it around until the end of the year, only giving specs and final info closer to the on-sale date.
