8" Alpine NAVI Install

Started a new project..........
Had a customer return an Alpine INE-Z928HD 8"wvga out of his F-150 and thought that would look good in my T4R.

I currently have a Pioneer AVIC-Z930bt installed so I just ordered a new Metra dash kit to try and fit the new 8" screen. Anyway I was able to get it to fit pretty good. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics I will post more when I actually install it into the car this weekend.

I feel this screen takes up a lot more of the empty space that occurs when replacing the OE headunit.

That's a good looking start so far. Is the double din unit the same size as a 7" unit and just the screen being 1" larger? Any thoughts on how much cutting of stock brackets to get the unit/screen to fit? The Metra kit seems popular but have you considered the Scosche dash kit? It seems to break up the empty space on either side a bit better. Nonetheless, your project gives those without nav a nice option.

The body of the Alpine Nav is actually true double din size but, the screen and screen surround is substantially larger. This requires either a Perfect Fit dash kit by Alpine or a custom install. I chose to use the metra kit because it is flat and would allow for easy cutting to fit the larger screen.

I have a lot of experience with both dash kits scosche and metra and the scosche does break up the empty space with the indention and curve lines but, I feel the Metra paint job matches the interior better.

I will post more pics with my old unit side by side so you can see the difference in size. I know its 1" but it really seems bigger than that.

Everything installed. Like is said earlier the 1" really makes a huge difference(that's what she said).

Super happy with the unit and how everything turned out. I actually used the bracket from the Scosche kit to mount the unit directly to the vehicle instead of rigging a bracket to the Metra kit.

Does your Bluetooth work as seamlessly as factory setup? For example, as soon as I get in and turn on my 4Runner, it connects to Bluetooth and starts playing music where left out without intervention by me.

Did you retain the use of ALL of your steering wheel controls with that head unit?

Yes the Bluetooth works great for both hands free and audio. All steering wheel controls were retained except the voice command. I've installed a lot of different Navigations and this one by far takes the cake.

One more Bluetooth/steering wheel/factory function Q: Does this setup use the Toyota speakers and microphone, or does it require a separate microphone to be installed as with the Pioneer's?

Sure.......
It utilizes the speakers in the vehicle but, the factory mike is not used. You can answer or hang up a call with the steering control buttons.

I sell directly to new car dealers exclusively so everything we do has to be as OEM as possible.

Thanks, the Metra kit is a close match for sure.
