Love your rig, you have done some amazing work on it. I have a 14 trail on order that should be here in the next few weeks (hopefully) Let me know if you wouldn't mind having a newbie tag along sometime to learn the trails around here.

Beautiful 1st Gen and an awesome build up!! Makes me want to start looking for another 1st Gen. This last year has been the first time I have been without a 1st Gen in a long time. Keep up the great work!

Slowly. I've been helping a friend redo a 79' Wagoneer, and it's been cutting
into my little bit of free time.

We used to do a lot of ATVing around the Welch, and Bluefield area before Hatfield McCoy, and I'm sure there are still places to enjoy without the need of a helmet(from my understanding the truck/suv ok trails require helmet for

I've been busy helping everybody else, and not doing much to my own lately.
That's got to change. This summer it will depart from NC, and drive to the Grand Canyon, then to Moab for some wheeling, then to Ouray CO for 4-5 days, North to Wyoming and Montana for a couple days exploring, on towards the Black Hills of South Dakota, travel on to be ferried across Lake Michigan and back South to home. Somewhere circa 6000miles round trip.
The powerplant has been good, but has 330k on it now, and deserves a break. I have thought long and hard about many different options, and kept coming back to a new Toyota short block. I decided now was as good of time as any to take the plunge. So here she is:
I also have a head inbound from engbldr with oversized valves and their 270/430 camshaft, and a Doug Thorley tri-y header from Summit Racing.
For the amenities, I will be redoing the cargo area to accommodate the 63qt ARB fridge I recently purchased.
It will include slideouts for the fridge, camping stove, and drawers. I have removed the inner side panels as the room behind them will utilized for storage. For one, I'll be swapping from CO2, to an air compressor to save space, and weight.
I decided to try some inexpensive HIDs off ebay. These are the 35w 7" and I am very pleased with their operation.
I will be painting the bezels on them black as the red just doesn't do it for me.

Followed most of your build on Expo....now that I have a first gen myself I'm getting the mod itch.
How much time are you budgeting for the 6000 mile summer trip?
What brand is that air compressor? I've got the recommended one from Pep Boys and it's done well so far, but want to pick up another for mounting similar to your setup.
Also, since you work with Toyota parts, maybe you can help. Do you know the name/part number of the stone/mud guards that mount to the body in front of the rear tires? This piece still available from Toyota?

I'll be gone for approx 17-19 days. Drive to AZ day 1 into 2, not planning on staying there long as AZ in July ≠ fun, 4 hours north to Moab for 1-2 days, then 3 hours to Ouray CO, spend 4 days there wheeling, one day to WY/MT, then 2 days there, half day to the Black Hills of SD, stay there for 2 days, then the last legs of the trip give me about 3-4 days to travel, visit, and take in the views. I don't want to set anything I don't have to in stone, as I may find one place worth staying longer. The only thing that's pretty sure it the dates i'll be around Ouray.
The compressor is a TJM and has worked well. It isn't nearly as fast as the CO2(i didn't expect it to), but it is much smaller, and much lighter. I will accept the loss in refill speed to keep the room I've gained.
The parts you are looking for are called " wheel quarter opening trim", I call them spats. They are discontinued from Toyota either way. The part#s were 62613-89104-01, and 62614-89104-01 for textured black.

I think you made a good choice. An engnbldr head with a good cam and that Thorley header should give you all the grunt you need.

I used to own an 85 longbed pickup on 35s w/5.29s, with basically the same motor setup and was pleased with it. Hopefully this will be the same. I spent hours and hours and hours trying to decide between the 1uz, 5vz, and either of the rz's. What helped with the decision for me was I've replaced almost everything on my 22re that could wear or go bad as precautionary moves. If I went any other direction, I'd have to do the same for peace of mind.
I've only needed more power one time. The key word being needed. I have remedied that with added gear multiplication of the 4.7 tcase. I'll also bring a timing light next time I'll be gaining 10k feet elevation. That lesson won't be forgotten. A 22re(especially with 310k miles) tuned for 900ft elevation is anemic at 10k, and much worse at 13k ft.
