86' 4runner gets VooDoo'd

Awesome, just awesome.
Tired of shifting gears? How did you decide on the 3.4?

I prefer manual transmission, but couldn't find a good stick shift donor vehicle.
I've spent a ton of hours researching different swaps. From diesels like the
1KZ, or 2.8 Cummins to the Ford 5.0 or GM LS series, and even considered the 1UZ Lexus, and 2UZ Toyota options. I eventually decided the 5VZ would basically double the power of the 22RE, be very reliable, get decent fuel mileage, and have parts readily available if I had an issue. Smurf was fun to drive before. With the 5VZ, and auto, I expect it to be more so afterward.

Nice work! Any plans on swapping for a solid front axle? I’m just getting started on my project (87 runner) and I’m debating on whether the SAS is worth the work.

I've talked myself into, and out of a SAS 1000 times. At this point, i'll probably keep it IFS. It rides incredibly good, and performs pretty well.
If I go SAS, I'd want to go to a bigger tire(36"-37") and would likely put it
in situations with a higher probability for body damage. In it's current state, it's done every trail I've wanted, and gotten me all over the country. I'm not sure if I SAS'd if I'd want to hop in it and drive it 3k miles than wheel it, as most folks that go that route tend to stay closer to home, or trailer long distances.

After removing the dipstick hole plug in the side of the block, and installing a T100 tube and dipstick I needed to plug the oil pump housing hole where the original 99 4Runner dipstick was located. I used a Dorman 555-007 13.7mm freeze plug.

I'm using Chilkat Designs conversion motor mount brackets for the swap. The original mount was .190" behind the A/C compressor bracket, and the new much beefier conversion brackets were substantially thicker. This was going to create an issue with alignment on the other bolts for the compressor bracket. I just used a Sawzall to remove the material on the comp bracket, and everything lined back up perfectly.

Nice to see some progress. I really like your truck.

I’m keeping the ifs in mine as well. I’m not going much bigger than 33s so it will work great, and as you said, the ride is nicer for moderate trails. If I want a sfa ride, I can jump in my 3500 diesel and get bounced around!

Where did you find the dorman freeze plug? I just finished my 3rz swap and looked all over for one. I currently have 2 dipsticks until I could find one.

I had to modify the mounts a little, as they were hitting the back of the A/C compressor, but it does fit, and is finally mounted after much procrastination.

I had to drop the BudBuilt t-case crossmember skid bad down, and will be re-drilling the tcase mounting holes .75" back, as it would not line up with the A340 + gear drive tcase adapter.

Next up is wiring. The list of "to do's" is getting a little bit shorter.

I know this thread is old, but I just found it and I gotta say WOW! I can't hit the "Like" button enough for this 4Runner's story. Makes me wish (well, almost) I lived in Winston-Salem so you could work on my '90 model!

What a great truck. Love the photos...especially the one of your dog riding in it.
