86 4Runner - New to Forum - Engine ??

So this is one of those "gray" questions.
Any engine can be made to work. The 22r design engine will work in your truck. That said, each model may or may not have a different wiring harness or set up. But, you should definitively be able to get a 22r to work in your truck. Hell, the wiring harnesses changed on 4runners from year to year as things like EVAP and exhaust control changed, and with a little tinkering you can get them to work with no problem.

In the U.S. domestic market, only the Celica from the the 80's was the only other that came with the 22r. The 22r from 84 on is the same exact as the 22re. Only diffrence is the intake. Now earlier ones like 83 back came with the double timing chain and dome pistons and concave heads. I prefer the older ones. They have alot more torque. 20r was the predisesor to the 22r and share the same head, crank, and timing componants. Block has smaller sleave and smaller pistons.

wouldnt that be in theory a hemi??? one thing i remember about my fathers 1979 toyota is that he would always say it had a hemi. hemispherical head design? was he right or full of it?

The earlier 22R(-E) engines utilized a different timing chain and head configuration. Also, there are many minor differences year to year. If you're swapping an entire engine, it shouldn't be an issue (apart from wiring harness issues), if you're only changing parts, it's a larger job.

If you are replacing the entire engine, one from from an early 80's Celica or Corona should work, as well as an 81+ truck.

Most cars today have hemis. Chrysler was just the first back in the day. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

If you're going to pull the block instead of repairing what you've got, why not go all the way and put a 3.4 in? It's a documented swap.

It ain't plug and play, if that's what you're asking. I've watched a couple threads for it, seems like relocation of the motor mounts and tranny crossmembers is required, in addition to the standard harness splicing. But that ain't much, considering you're already planning on pulling the block.
Search the engine swap section on Yotatech, you'll find all the information you could ever want.

It's a fairly intense swap if you were going to swap it for a 3.0 V6.
Since you have a 4 cyl 22R, there is a lot more work involved.
If you've never done an engine swap before, that may not be a good first choice.

i aquired the same thing last year, an 86 with a cracked block. i ended up finding a carbed 22r out of an 84 2wd pickup. Had to do some drilling and tapping to get the EFI manifolds to bolt up(intake and exhaust) and had to switch the oil pan along with some other small odds and ends. runs great though. Still need to get creative and figure out a place for my knock sensor
