Ugh, sucks to see all that rot! Easterners need to venture a bit further west when shopping... My 16 year old, 190k-some-odd-all-Colorado-miles 4runner has ZERO rust.

Props to you for sticking with it and making that underside look hella clean. I don't know if i could have done it.
My 4runner is originally from IL too but only has some slight surface rust. Nothing at all compared to that, it just makes it a challenge anytime I wanna undo a bolt from underneath haha.

Mine came from Ft Collins and also had next to nothing for rust.
OP, did you ever call the seller and ask him why he failed to mention he had epoxy on the frame?? I mean really, thats a joke. I would have been ticked

Damn! That's a lot of rust. The original pic of your rear axle looks like an old cannon from a long ago sunk pirate ship. Looks like new now! Nice job.

Yes I called him , he told me too bad , I should have known when I talked him down 1400. But 1400 left me lots of repair money . Still happy with the truck , when I say clean I mean there is not a scratch in the truck and interior is perfect ! You live and you learn from your experiences . The world is round and crappy things happen to crappy people .

Wow. I hope that person slips on some ice and splits their knee caps in half. Both of them. What kind of delusional response is that to make it your fault for talking them down in price?! What a shyster. Have you checked everything mechanical on it too?
Anyway, it looks like you're doing a good job fixing it up and aside from the undercarriage rust, that thing is as clean a 4Runner as I've ever seen! 100k miles is realllll low too, Congrats!

Toytec ultimate w/ 890 rear springs and 1" body lift on stock tires ( new tires will be on this week )

Im originally from NE Ohio and Pittsburgh. I never, ever ever will buy a vehicle there again. I bought my parents their last two 4x4s, yes I love them that much, and bought them in the South when I lived in DC. The same truck from the south with zero rust, still costs less than what idiots in Pittsburgh will ask for rotted out rust buckets often with totally homebuilt rigged lift kits and parts...its scary...plus body lifts and homemade lifts are common in those areas...and yes, people paint over rust and sell it to you without being honest.
I love those areas really good people, but the road salt in winter destroys vehicles and people for some crazy reason wanna charge a ton for used beaters, yet will come and be total pricks trying to get things near free....
Dont buy vehicles from parts of the country they use road salt, not OH, PA, NY, CT etc...
The South was great, but now that I live in Cali, wow come with a wad of cash and take a vacation out here, and drive home gorgeous 4x4s with no rust at all. If you are east coast search southern states closest to you on Craigslist, if you are willing to drive back from West Coast for giggles check LA, OC, and SD Craigslist in SoCa. I came here and bought an 87 GMC shortbed that looked nearly new, something that would never last in Pittsburgh. All original body, frame still had factory stickers and whatever version of coating they used, no rust at all, thing was beautiful. This 98 4runner I have doesnt have a spec of rust, a Toyota I bought my dad in Pittsburgh in late 90s we had to have the frame repaired multiple times from rot until we finally sold it. I think we even put on a new bed, yea we did. Unless you can garage all your vehicles, and wash them after any run in the snow where they put down salt, it just chews through vehicles.

I imagine if, IF you found the right owner like yourself who took care of it, you can get something that is legit. I wish I was home more if I could hose off/power wash my folks cars in the winter more often and keep them garaged maybe it would stop things from rusting so much.
What I did with the last truck I bought them, 04 Silverado 4x4, I had it detailed and powerwashed top to bottom, Line-Xed the bed and wheelwells, and part of the frame where it could be done without being a hassle. Rest of frame I had whatever the old school rust proofing layer done before taking it up to Pitt. Its done quite well that way even with it being used in heavy snow and on hunting and rifle range trips alot in snow and mud.
Basically on average you can grab a car from the south or west that with minimal care could have rock solid frame and body panels even being 10-20 years old. In the snow with salt, even a 5 year old car can start having rust issues already. The picture of that rearend is scary how nasty it looks....if I had time Id run out and snap a shot of my 98 4runner undercarriage and it is super clean and Im not doing anything out of ordinary upkeep wise.

Glad you put that pick up. Thank for doing that. You and I have both gone through the same rust issues and going with a lot of the same mods haha. Keep it up

A lot of people say they have to trim even after a 1" body lift so I was expecting to trim .
But I have no rubbing even at full flex , I changed the bolts in the rear wheel well for pan heads so they are flush . I wheeled the truck Friday night and did not hear any rubbing , and might i say the truck did amazing . The rear locker is incredible and I climbed hills that a 90 full size bronco with 38" mud tires and 9" lift couldn't get up .
