99 Tall Fronts, OME 906 Rear, 4Runner Specific 5100s Installed And Review

I finally got all of the parts and replaced the worn out original suspension at 215k miles.

Components
FRONT:
Coils - Used 99 Tall Coils (unsure of mileage)
Struts - Bilstein 5100 for 96-02 4Runner - Set up 1 clip - 24-248730
REAR:
Coils - Old Man Emu 906
Shocks - Bilstein 5100 for 96-02 4Runner - 24-249966

Reasoning
1. Mild lift - No need to go bigger than necessary for my use case. Don't want bigger tires (265/75s). Don't want to have to replace/modify anything else.
2. Higher spring rate - I liked the higher spring rate of the 906 vs the 890. I don't have a truck, so I use this to haul dirt, wood, anything I can't fit inside.
3. 4Runner Specific Valving - The shocks/struts are valved for the vehicle and not for a truck, so in theory it should be less harsh. Bilstein actually recommends a rear spring rate of 220# with these so the 906s are a perfect match.

Measurements
These were taken in approximately the same spot on my not completely level driveway. First is ground to fender, then hub to fender.

Before:
Driver Front - 35.5" / 21"
Driver Rear - 35.5" / 21"
Passenger Front - 35.625" / 21.125"
Passenger Rear - 35.375" / 20.875"
After (Pre-Alignment):
Driver Front - 36.75" / 22.25"
Driver Rear - 37.125" / 22.625"
Passenger Front - 36.875" / 22.375"
Passenger Rear - 36.875" / 22.375"

Result/Impressions
Lift:
I gained about 1.5-1.75" of lift which is exactly what I was looking for. The front is a tad higher than I'd like right now, but I'm guessing it'll come down a little after getting it aligned. If not, I'll probably take the front strut down to the bottom ring once the rears are fully settled.

Driving:
On road, the driving experience has improved dramatically. It leans less in corners, the front barely dives when braking, it handles pot holes, bumpy roads, and abrupt driveway/road entrances without being bouncy or jolting. I don't know that "drives like a truck" is a fair statement, as most people associate that with an acceptably harsh ride, so I'll say it drives like a "new, mid-size" truck.

My offroad impressions are very limited right now. I took it on a very eroded (sections are impassable without high clearance vehicles) dirt road near my home and it handled the bumps, holes, and climbs great. It's just more comfortable to drive overall.

looks like more lift

Looks like a lot of lift with the 265/75 for some reason. Just a thought if you take it to the bottom clip seat swap out the rubber isolator for an Energy Suspension poly one. I think that would put you between the bottom and 2nd clip seat height lift wise.

Buy a pair of the OME 10mm trim packers and throw them in the rear. That will help level out the truck.

I think I'd rather bring the front down than raise the back. This would reduce the preload (a small amount) on the front coil from being on a higher perch and improve ride quality (slightly). Maybe if I end up adding a heavier rear bumper I'll go this route, but I don't plan on it in the foreseeable future.

This is pretty much my exact plan on my 4Runner... Though I will either be using the stock front 4WD springs from my '97 parts truck or the stock 2WD front springs from my '99 - I'll be comparing diameter, number of wraps and free length when I do the suspension to choose the stiffest of those two options.

Your description of the ride is exactly what I'm looking for...

Oh, any chance you can do hub center to fender measurements? That'll avoid tire size issues for any comparisons...

Very nice, I did mine very similar to this and love the look and ride quality. Keep us posted on how you feel it rides with the 906 springs..

100+ Mile Update

Thought I'd update after driving around 150 miles and doing a bit offroad.

I can't say enough about how much I love the set up. It rides great on the highway and in the city, brakes better because it doesn't dive like crazy, and performed great offroad. I ran Rattlesnake out at Five Mile Pass with my cousin and had enough flex and clearance for everything. If I had sliders I probably would've attempted Constrictor (the next trail up that's more difficult).

Looked at your other thread on suspension setup on your 96 Limited. Nice thread

I was thinking about upgrading to 5100s in the front, and possibly new coils, but I already have 99 Talls on my 99 LOL. I have 890s in the rear with ProComp long travel shocks (I don't haul much in the rear and no aftermarket bumper).

Are you happy with the 5100s and stock coils?

Thanks, and I'm really happy with them, especially on the front. The rear is a hair stiffer than I'd like, but that's from the coils. To match the 890s you'd probably need to be on the 3rd of the 4 clip settings so your coils would have more preload than mine, so I'm not sure how that'd affect your experience with them. I think you'd be happy with them though.

I'll wait till I throw an aftermarket bumper (and maybe winch) up front before making any changes.

The 2WD coils are definitely not '99 Talls' :becky:

I still have the stock 2WD front springs on there and it is pretty significantly lower than it was before adding the 4WD components (before it was just over 20" in the front hub to fender, haven't measured after).

I have a set of pull-off coils from a 4WD on the shelf in addition to my 2WD springs on my truck, both have the same paint markings on the springs. I have not unloaded and measured them both side by side.

I'll document what I find with mine when I do the suspension on my thread. I have '97 4WD springs, 5th gen trail springs and my stock stuff so far... I have been getting the itch more and more to get the suspension done.

I have the 880/906 set up on both of my vehicles with the 4runner specific 5100's and I think the ride is fantastic.

I generally have just a dog in the back and a few tools, but I wanted the 906 to be able to handle a 4 tray bike rack in addition, which they do pretty well.

I think the 906 does not ride harsh in the least bit unloaded, but maybe that is just me and I am just used to my Tacoma.

On my 99, I feel like I sit perfectly level (I would love a little rake but it just hasn't bothered me enough to add the trim packers yet) and on the 2000, I think the slight amount of rake and stance is awesome, major improvement from what it was.

Thought I'd share my newly installed setup as it's almost similar to traben27's.

Front: Original to the truck '01 4WD SR5 Coils (244K on them) // 3rd gen 4Runner specific Bilstein 5100s at the lowest snap ring setting

Rear: New OME 906 coils (no spacers or trim packers) // 3rd gen 4Runner Bilstein 5100s

It's worth noting that the truck is completely free of any weight in the rear and front. The factory trailer hitch is mounted, but the spare tire is not.

I am happy with the setup. It yielded me an additional inch or so in the rear and I believe I gained height in the front with the 5100s even at the bottom snap ring setting. In hindsight, I should have measured all around before to confidently say the height gained, but it's more or less the same height as other similar setups I have seen on here.
It's still a pavement princess, just sitting a little taller now :)

Bump.

Sorry for the old thread bump but, I just picked up a 2000 4Runner Sport that already came equipped with 265/75/16 Hankook Dynapro ATM tires and new springs/struts. Now after some research I have decided to run the 99 tall front springs and OME 906 rears. I see everyone swapping to the bilstein 5100 shocks all around when doing this setup. Since I have newer shocks, I was hoping to get away with what I have instead of buying the 5100's.

Anyone have experience with this spring setup but on regular replacement shocks instead of the bilsteins? Looking for a slight lift that's even F/R so my tires up front no longer rub.

Thanks again!
