A-Ha's Build.

4wd becomes shift on the fly for anyone doing this in a V8. the V6 guys will have to stop and flip a switch to let the front axle engage. then shift the lever.

To be honest, I don't quite think there's enough room to allow the J shift pattern of the single shifter to work in the 4runner center console area, without modifying some plastic trim pieces anyway. It wouldn't be a clean look IMO.

why would the v6 not be the same as the v8 with this setup?

The V8 is full time 4 wheel drive. The V6 is part time 4X4. It uses an add to connect and disconnect the front diff. The V8 does not have the add that the V6 has. That's why the V6 needs to have a separate switch to connect the add to the front diff. The center console space is the same on all 4Runners.

Hope that helps and great job Aussie!

Awesome post! You didn't waste anytime doing this mod. Is there no way to keep the rear AC duct?

I believe there will be a solution! haven't quite worked out all the details yet but I think we can save it.

Sweet build!

Thanks!

Darklight pretty much covered the details. the ADD would still have to be turned on an off. Thinking about it now though, I don't see why you couldn't leave the ADD turned on then shift on the fly. the process of shifting is obviously going to remain the same on whatever vehicle you put this transfer case on. If you had a solid front axle you'd have to lock the front hubs then shift into 4wd. so its whatever the setup requires.

Aha, enjoyed reading through your build thread. Love your truck! I especially enjoyed your posts dated 2012 about putting your T4R in the mud. We race in the mud and had a similar situation with our timing belt. Lots of fun fixing that issue!

Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I pulled my front driveshaft last spring to replace a u-joint and drive in 2wd for a week. Even with stock gears and 35's I could burn the tires world even trying. Was a wild ride! Lol

Did it not set any codes?

Kinda what I was thinking.

Awd down here is almost useless. We see snow once every year or two and usually a couple of inches at most. I'm liking this idea. So if you go with an early model tcase you'd need the tcase, levers, the spring and tcase gasket, then some wiring modification?
What else?

So far the needed materials have been

07+ FJ Tcase or even up to 2015 4runner trail tcase (both the same manual tcase for the auto trans, however FJ case is the on with the worm gear pre2010-2011)

twin stick kit from Front range off road.

upgraded shift retaining spring from wyatt Rocksolidtoys.com

30mm socket to pull the drive flange

12mm socket to split the case

RTV to make a gasket (I dont know that you can purchase a gasket for the tcase)

loose wire

wire connectors

12x12 sheet of 1/8th inch rubber to seal the hole cut in the floor.

rivets/ rivet gun

a rubber glove to make the seal at the top of the shifter block where the shifters go into the tcase (the one from front range ripped durring reassembly rubber glove an some zip ties worked like a champ)
an of course gear oil

broken seal:

The fj shifters on the front range site didn't appear to be offset like yours.

You can bend the round rod that comes on the frontrange shifters to create the offset if you didnt have access to a welder. I wanted the look of the flat bar so I used some 1"x 3/16" steel bar and fabricated them to what you see in the pictures above.

Cool
Do you have to lose the park brake?

Nope, it will pass over the rubber seal. Only thing guys are losing is the Air duct that pass through the console to the rear seat vents but I think I have a solution to that. Just haven't worked out the details yet.
