A-Ha's Build.

There is a speed sensor in the transfer case, right?
What does it do?
I haven't looked into that. Just want to make sure I don't have any surprises.
Called about one this morning. The awd case is actually worth more and mine is in perfect condition. May try and do some trading.

the Fj Cases have a worm gear on the output shaft, a long with a mounting well that will accept a gear driven speed sensor. I showed pictures of this a few posts back before I started the tear down. RST sells the sensors that will work as well if you tell them your tire size they can correct speedometer issues.

If my awd case were still in good condition it would already be listed in all the yota classifieds along with ebay and craigslist for no less than 650. as long as the actuator works and the seals are good its a great tcase.

I have a 4wd computer for sale.. i dont think its worth as much lol

What's the difference not being in an fj? Do they grind going into 4lo?

Drove the 4runner around this weekend a little and putting the tcase in 4wd first, switching to neutral alows clean grind free shift into low range. Once in low range you can still shift between 2 an 4 while in gear and moving. Have to go back into 4wd and neutral to shift our of low range.

Great info man! Thank you.

Sweet write up!! I'm in the Raleigh area so I might have to come check this out!! I'm planning on doing the elocker build soon and the tcase is moving up to the top of the list!

How's that Optima Yellowtop D27F holding up?

its not, replaced last winter with a autozone special. I cant say I'll get behind optima anymore. I've been running interstate deep cycle marine batteries in the boat, just replaced one after 6.5 years of use. way less price to.

Well bummer. Thought my battery was going out, so was battery shopping. Turns out it's my alternator, which is only 10 months old. Unfortunately, the shop that supplied the aftermarket alternator and installed it is in Moab, and I'm in Dallas. So much for the warranty.

apparently I was due for a new set of gear teeth? I don't drive the 4r much anymore these days on the road and wanted to get back into daily driving it here and there. Went to get an inspection friday and had this happen on the way out of the neighborhood. I don't even remember giving it that much hell the last time I went off-road. I'm thinking a rush install or something. Fortunaty I purchased through eastcoastgearsupply.com and they still have it under warranty until next October! shipping it off to get repaired/replaced this week. Check out the pinion teeth marks on the carrier!

Metaltech 4x4 sucks!

I spent some time looking around at the various radflo coil over suppliers. Looking for someone that offered 700lb coils and the old Overland warehouse valve specs. Awesomely enough metaltech 4x4 had this exact description on there 2.5 extended travel coilovers.

Goal was to order the new coilovers so I could just unbolt my old, slap on the new and resale the old to recoup some cost. (its about 508 bucks to refresh a set of coil-overs with new coils valving and adding new hardware) Figured it would be a wash between sending mine off vs. ordering new. I'm running 650lb coilovers right now and they're just not quite enough with the V8, bumper, and winch.

Feb 13th: ordered Coilvers
Feb 27th: No shipping updates received, still waiting.
Feb 28th: called to get update, status unknown. Assumed they were at least a week out
March 1st: Coilovers show up
March 2nd: received notification from UPS that the coilovers had shipped from metaltech
March 2nd: inspected coilovers in box, 650lb coilovers were found vs. 700lb
March 3rd: requested refund, shipped coilover back to metaltech.
March 13th: UPS indicates successful return of coilovers.
March 15th: No contact from metaltech called to check status of return.
March 15th: Metaltech verified receipt of coil over shipment, approved refund.
March 21st: Still no refund, emailed metaltech for status update.
March 21st: Metal tech apologizes "Sorry, there seems to be an issue with Amazon pay. It is not letting us execute the refund.
We are trying to get it resolved"
March 22nd: Still no refund, forced to file claim with amazon pay.

Still don't have 700lb coilovers :nono:

On a more positive note though, I've been chasing a vibration in my front end for years now. I've literally replaced every part except the spindles themselves. Took off my center caps on a whim.. Vibration Gone!! seems as if Black Rock wheels are not in proper tolerance to our hubs to maintain hub eccentricity as well as lug eccentricity. With that vibration Gone I've started to daily drive again. So I figured it was time to clean up the ol girl!

So far, new seat cushion, and fixed the lumbar support motor in the driver seat. New fan blower motor. Put a leather boot on the twin sticks. two new front baja mtz's. New rear window weather striping and trim seal. removed all the old stickers from the rear windows. It's been fun to get my motivation back. Not being able to pinpoint that vibration had really bummed me out of the 4r world for a bit.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. What made you think you need a coilover rebuild other then wanting 700lb coils? was it 500 a pair to refresh them or 500 a coil? I have the 2.5's with 700lb coils so im curious to know.

I currently have the 650lb coils, the cost of 700lb coils is a little over a 100 per side, plus I was going to go ahead and have them re-valved and freshened up which is another hundred bucks per side. Also I've roughed up the adjusting nuts over the years and wanted to have them replaced which is another 45 bucks per side for adjusting nuts/collars. I don't think they're close to being worn out or anything just figured why not while they're there. so roughly 500 total to make what I currently have work plus the down time.

I can get a new set of coilovers for 1200ish, potentially selling my used for 700ish. Same out of pocket cost to me but less down time.
