It's my understanding that the last seven characters of a VIN are the vehicle's serial number, and that, for some manufacturers, the leftmost of these characters is a location or plant id.
I was at a Toyota dealer today and noticed that, of all the many 4Runners on the lot, two of them had VINs where the seventh character from the end was "8" rather than "0."
In other words, most VINS ended with something like 0001234 but these two appeared as 8001234. Does anyone know what the significance of the "8" is?
Thanks in advance, Bill
