About rear sag

You seem to have the answer I'm looking for. I tow my sportboat (and sag then) and do some infrequent 4x4'ing but don't want to have the street ride stiffer than it is now... millerrad1651 have you found much of a change in ride quality with the 906's? With that, did you do any changes to the front end?

I ran stock springs in front, OME 906's in back, stock struts all around, so I think I'm qualified to comment on this. The rear did stiffen up, but it wasn't a bad thing. The ride was still very comfortable, you just didn't have as much body roll in corners, or squat under acceleration. It rode more like a truck, but a very comfortable on-road truck, and it definitely improved the feel offroad as well. The only downside IMO was the price, which isn't much in the grand scheme of suspension mods, considering you don't need to change anything else.

I say do it, if you aren't happy there is a huge market for used 906's on this board, they don't last long.

I have a appt. on 7/5 for the recall on the coils for my 97 SR5. Right now, to my eye, it looks fine. BUT, I am trying to get things done on it that I have procrastinated on.

I looked over the posts on here and now I am second guessing myself. I sort of come from the if it's not broke, don't fix it way of thinking but on the other hand, if they will correct it, and it's free, which mine if covered under the recall, I feel I should do it. But I don't want to take something that isn't a problem and make it one....hmmm...guess I will have to mull it over with a few brews and some serious fireworks at a friends house...up here in clark country washington state, we can get the good stuff.

Thanks for the feedback! I think IanB, you may have the answer I'm looking for. I have a few items I have to attend to, on the 4runner, but I think that this issue has just moved up my list! I was thinking of air bags but it seems this rear sag is a known defect, which us Canadians have been left out of. it just seems to make sense to replace the springs (and shocks).

Agreeing with IanB on this, the 906s should work pefect for what you want. If you already have some sag, the 906s should bring you just above the front end, giving you a nice stance. And they will work great for towing a decent size boat. I like the ride, firm but not jarring. And for the time being, you can use stock shocks, or upgrade to Bilstein HDs, which are a cheap upgrade that have large improvements.

rear 1.5" spacer

i have rear sag after completing a lift. i want to correct this by adding a rear spacer. the smallest rear spacer besides trim packers are 1.5" daystars. I want to chop the 1.5" spacer to 1". will it fall apart? has anyone done this? How?

According to this site: Toyota Safety Recall and Car Service Information
I am subject to this recall. It says that the recall is has not been done. When I called a dealer they said that the recall had been done in 2002. Any idea who is right?\

NM I made a mistake. I put in the vin for the 4runner I didn't buy into the recall site, and used the vin for the one I did buy when I called in.

No more saggin

I just got back from the shop. My '02 SR5 was sagging really bad and the rear shocks were absolutely shot (any bump on the road had my eyeballs bouncing for another 100 feet).

I ordered some OME shocks and coils from Wheelers Offroad (N86 shock and 2891coil rear, N91S shock and 2881 coil front) and just got back from having them installed - I'd do it myself if I had tools, but I don't because I'm mechanically disinclined. Look it up, it's a legitimate medical condition!

Anyway, the rear sag is gone, and the whole stance is level and higher. The ride home was great - I felt like I was driving another vehicle.

I hope this keeps the problem fixed. Either way, it looks and rides a whole lot better.

I replaced my coil springs with new factory springs and still had a sag. I just installed 1.5" Daystar spacers on the rear and now it sits level. If I had to do it over again, I would not replace the springs because it didn't fix a thing. That little bit of sag has a very negative impact on the ride and handling too. Toyota should correct the problem on all 3rd gens instead of limiting the recall to the first few years. I got the spacers for around $40 and installed them myself so it was an easy, inexpensive fix. Here's a pic with the spacers installed (Sorry, no before & after)

Hey where did you buy the spacers from?

LH Sag?

Ever since I got my 4runner it's sat lower on the driver's side. I just replaced all of the springs and struts (and was sure to put the longer springs on the LH) and it still sits that way. Ground to fender is 90cm on the RH and only 87 on the LH. Is this a common problem? Is there something I should be looking for?

I am going to get some spacers for the LH spring, but I am wondering if there is a better solution to this or something I've missed that I should check first.

worse

So I have been following this thread as the new guy and now its my turn. I have a 99 that has 166K on it, had new Monroe Quickstruts installed in the front and the matching shocks in the back with the old springs. Love the new ride but now it sags over an inch to the drivers side.?!

So today I had the 1.5 daystars installed on top of the rear springs and it now sits up a little higher but the sag to the drivers side is worse!!! What did I do wrong? Was I only supposed to use the spacer on one side?

Thank you in advance for any and all helpful advice.

I'd also like to know because my truck has now also started to exhibit some lean toward the driver's side...

Recently bought a 01' T4R Base SR5 2WD with 83k miles on it. How do I tell if I have a sag problem?

Visually, nothing seems to be notably amiss. From the driver's seat, the hood does seem to be sloping upward a bit but not sure if that has anything to do with the sag at all. I am used to a Montero that has a very different seating level/posture.

I checked Toyota site for the VIN and did not find any service/maintenance records or recall information.

I'm gonna contact my dealer tomorrow and see if they honor the same thing here in Canada (I doubt it).. my truck looks like this..
As I mentioned in another thread, my buddy thought it was a station wagon from far..

I figured this might be the best place to post this... I thought one of the various skilled fabricators might take a look at this and think *Hell, I can make that!* because I think there could be market in this crowd. After all, sag seems to plague our 4r's and many people run at least some extra weight on a regular basis over the rear axle.

Found this picture here: 1970 GMC Pickup: Fantastic Flatbed - Four Wheeler Magazine

Apparently the guy is getting 12" of travel out of a 4" airbag. I'm not sure that's even travel for the hardcore guys, but for the expedition wheelers and those who want to keep a set of softer springs it might be good stuff.

Wow that looks familiar.
My 96 had exact same look pretty depressing really.

A year ago I did a fixing on mine.
Installed Moog coils front & back = 110.00
1.5 daystar spacer lift = 125.00

From that point I pulled running boards , added new shocks & tires.

The End result

i just installed quickstruts in the front and have newer coils in the rear. I'm seriously bulldogging now..any chance these fronts will settle and lower a little over time? My 265/75 BFG All Terrains look small up there!

I installed the same struts and new shocks in the rear, back in April. The instructions said it would take a few weeks for the struts to settle down to a normal height. It's been 7 months and the car sill sets way high in the front and rides like a lumberwagon. It feels like i'm driving on rails. I've had an alignment done and taken it to the dealer to make sure the shocks are on properly Left and Right. Before I installed the shocks, the ride height was level. The rear shocks bottomed out going over RR tracks so thats why I replaced them. Kinda like headlights, thats why I replaced the front shocks. I wish I hadn't now. Has anyone else had the problems with the Quickstruts from Monroe. I'm gonna contact RockAuto and see if they will replace them.

I just got my quick struts delivered and will install them as soon as I get some free 'uninterrupted' free time.. I read that getting the 99 tall coils help with the stance.. which I'm about to order as well...

I'm going to try this out at my local dealer. I'll post the results. Ill look up the part number and see if I can find it on my coils in case they try to say mine were changed. Does anyone know offhand where the part number is on the coils?

I hear MOOG rear coils are a good fix if not...has anyone installed the MOOG CC255 coils? Is that the right coil for a late 97...98 Model Year?

Vds

Well I can't find who wrote it now, but someone asked what VDS is. From what I gather it is the 4th to 8th digits on your VIN (mine is HN86R). VDS stands for Vehicle Descriptor Section (of the VIN).
