About rear sag

I'm going to try this out at my local dealer. I'll post the results. Ill look up the part number and see if I can find it on my coils in case they try to say mine were changed. Does anyone know offhand where the part number is on the coils?

I hear MOOG rear coils are a good fix if not...has anyone installed the MOOG CC255 coils? Is that the right coil for a late 97...98 Model Year?

I used MOOG rear coils on my 2nd gen and was very happy with the results. Rode better than stock and gave it an aggressive stance.

Just put in new/used coils off another member of the board and it leveled nice. Rides 1,000x better also. His coils had less than 70,000 I think. The ones I had on my SR5 had a couple hairline cracks.

Steve,
Why be pissed? The work was already done. It would have been cool to get something for nothing but looks like someone already beat you to it. Maybe next time. At least you don't have the luck of the Canadian.

Is the warrenty still being honored? I'de like to get mine fixed but dont wanna bother if the dealer is gonna jerk me around.

New Coils

I have replaced bump stops a few years ago and also added some Rancho 5000 rear shocks. Now i'm getting this bouncy issue in the rear when driving on bumpy roads. I'm sure its the rear coils, so i have ordered some MOOG rear coil springs (part # 81043). I own a 1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 2wd w/ 16" wheels. I am waiting on wife to get home so i can tackle this project. In the mean time i'm on here searching on which way will be the easiest to replace the rear coils.

Jack the truck up, remove both rear tires, unbolt lower shock mounts, unbolt pan hard bar, press down on drivers side hub, pull drivers side spring out, repeat on passenger side. Unbolt sway bar if you can't get the spring out.

Thanks downpour 11 I have the Haynes manual here but it states many things to take off. Are there any specific lift spots on our 'runners or do I just have to find a nice solid, flat surface to lift from? Anyway, these coil springs are going in today...enough said. lol

Here's an attached pic from the FSM of the support locations (the shaded areas).

I haven't seen the instructions in the Haynes manual but it's as simple as my previous post. Especially since you're just replacing stock height springs. Easy as pie.

Found a set of gently used 99's off a 4wd SR5 with 16's... I havent seen them yet but hopefully they are the right ones. 90 bucks for the pair... worth a try. With my daystar 2.5 spacer should be a good stance.
New wheels and tires jsut went on also!! Good day

I am started on the road to fixing the rear sag in my 99. I have all the original equp. with about 180,000 miles. Today i ordered the OME 890 coils for the rear and will be installing when they arrive. Hopefully no more rear sag!

k so I took a few hours today to change my shocks and coils. (front struts to be done soon). The rear shock, I don't know how you guys have to patience to do this but I was cussing so much and loud my gf came down to the garage thinking I was having an argument with my neighbor

I was surprised to see the state of the rear shocks. The new coils are just regular ones (I was originally thinking of getting the 99 tall ones)

Well I will answer my own question..... I replaced both rear coil springs and it went rather well. I see no need to mess with the alignment after replacing the springs as nothing affecting alignment parts are messed with. When everything was said and done the new springs gave me at least two inches of lift that I didn't have before. I can say that it definitely takes care of any sagging!

i didn't read through the thread... sorry for the party foul!

replaced the springs and shocks, about 7 years ago... maybe more (?), with performance products 2" lift springs and bilstien shocks.

wife has a 2000 sr5 highlander edition 5-speed.

it was great!

well, the rear was sagging again and with a full load it was pretty bad.

my buddy helped me install the airlift 1000 kit and with approx. 10lbs of air in each airbag the rear is level with the front.

i can wait to load it up for some camping and see how it does :)

sorry if this was inappropriate for this thread... that is all :guitar2:

For those of you on a budget let me make a recommendation... I bought my 97 last week and it has 194,000 miles on the factory suspension. It rode like crap, especially the rear. I noticed from looking underneath it that the rear was sitting on the cone shaped bump stops that sit inside the springs. I ordered my new shocks and ordered the Daystar 1.5" spacers for the rear. The spacers came in yesterday so I went ahead and installed them by themselves. What a difference in the ride. No more bottoming out and the ride is smooth since I'm not riding on the bump stops any longer. In the future I plan to update all of my springs, but for now I have made a big improvement for a little over $40. Can't wait to put my shocks on this weekend.

I just got my quick struts delivered and will install them as soon as I get some free 'uninterrupted' free time.. I read that getting the 99 tall coils help with the stance.. which I'm about to order as well...

I am still dissatisfied with the Monroe strut pkg. I'll prolly bit the bullet and pop for some Bilstein or Koni's. I'm tired of getting beat to death on good roads nevermind the dirt roads I drive.

AirLift 1000

Been using the forum since purchasing a 98 4runner 4wd back in FEB. Great wealth of info. Wasn't having sag trouble when vehicle wasn't loaded, but 4runner would lean with a full tank of gas and would sag if boat was hooked up. Bought a airlift 1000 kit online and talked to my local garage, they wanted $170+tax to install the bags. I opted to do the install myself. Very easy. Jacked up the 4runner and put on jack stands so I could lower the axle. No need to remove the coils, cut out bumpstops with a sharp knife, squeezed air out of bags and slid through the coils, ran the airhose and done in less than 2 hours. No more sag with full tank of gas or boat hooked up. Running about 15psi on the driver side and 10psi on the passenger side when not loaded and I put 30 in both when the boat is hooked up. Very easy to install and very pleased with the results.
