Adding a Console USB Power Port to my 2007 Sport

I got the dual 2.1A model off Amazon (MicTuning brand). It seems to work fine but the USB ports don't seem deep enough. The stock cable doesn't go into the connector all the way. I'm not a fan of the high-gloss finish since it doesn't match the other buttons but I'm too lazy to hit it with some satin/flat paint now that it's installed.

When I have my phone charging I get engine noise through the Aux input when using the cable in the center console. I was hoping the filter and regulated supply would knock most of that out. It does seem to be slightly better than the cheapo chargers I was plugging into the 12V port but not a lot.

Ok guys. Bluesky had me thinking about ways to accomplish this in a different format, I ordered the blue sea 1039 a few minutes ago. I am going to attempt to install it without having to shave off some of the plastic on the sides of the port opening.

As I was looking at the 1039, I noticed they also had a dual USB charger socket that fits into a 1-1/8 inch hole.

So this got me thinking (lmao dont hurt yourself kid)....

I have recently also been looking at installing the OEM smokers kit which can be seen here. Do you guys think that the 12v cig lighter in that unit is removable so I can install the socket charger? I haven't been able to find anything on whether it is or not.

I've seen people do something similar but just added something like this which could also work really well. You can actually see what that combo looks like by viewing the first amazon review for the ashtray and lighter kit, it looks really nice. I do like the way the blue sea looks over the aukey one (looks more industrial / sturdy).

Have the OEM smokers kit. I just keep a 2 USB adapter in the lighted cig lighter outlet. Use the second if I'm plugging in my gps.

Ben, thanks for the question - didn't see it here before I replied to your PM, and wanted to post the answers for anyone it will help out.

I think going with the Blue Sea is a great choice. It's a solid piece designed for marine use and puts out enough juice to charge any device. I also like the flip-open cover, which keeps gunk out of the ports without having to fumble around with dust plugs.

About the install, the 1039 is a bit too big for the stock opening, so you just have to kind of shave a little at a time from the sides of the opening until you can get it to pop in. It's one of those things that's tough to explain in words but you'll see exactly what to do once you look at the unit and the opening it needs to fit in. Fortunately, the 1039 has a lip that will hide anything one might do to the opening, short of outright whack-and-hack butchery.

The biggest thing to be aware of is that once you start, there's no going back to a stock-sized switch.

Really did turn out nice!

I used a dual purpose USB, which allowed me to move an existing USB port hooked up to aftermarket Bluetooth out of the small compartment under the HVAC controls and over to this new space. I also added a switch to just the power portion which filled up the rest of the blanks next to the DAC button and it all looks factory. Very happy with the end result, as it removes a lot of clutter out of charging devices... it's especially nice on long trips. Here's a few pics.

Just installed the 1039. Thanks to Bluesky_07 for answering a few questions!

I quick spliced into the 12V power and ground and crimped some connectors the the unit.

Got sick of the slow charging, partially due to the 2.1/1.0 ports and also crappy cables so I ordered a bluesea 1039 and new OEM fast charge cables to hopefully never get let down again. I will have the 2.1/1.0 up for "pay it forward" grabs by the end of this week. It is spray painted to match OEM buttons and block some of the blue light.

Threw my blue sea version in today, had to carefully file out the sides of the opening to 20.90mm for it to clear, leave the top and bottom as is. It looks a little bulky and a lot less OEM but works well.

Also I have the used Amazon port up for grabs, comes with fused wire. Snaps right into stock opening. What put me over the edge is I have friends with the round versions of the Blue Sea mounted on their adventure motorcycles and they've been taking a beating for a couple years now, still charging fast and no worse for the wear.

Thanks Bluesky. I had looked at that earlier but clearly didn't pay enough attention. It mentions the rust-colored wire as the positive, but didn't mention the negative and I didn't look closely enough to where the tap was.

I just tried it and it worked out well. Then the crimp cap came loose. I'm gonna have to go get soldering stuff and re-work a few of the wires now, b/c I severed the cigarette lighter (never use it & don't want it - at least not right there) to make room on the wire for this new connection.

What was the negative? The OP post pics don't work anymore. I was going to tap splice the wires from the cigarette adapter too.

Rust is positive....what's the negative? Any why cant you just tap into the cig lighter versus after the white connectors???
