Aggressive Tires for my 4Runner?

Not to add fuel to the fire, but many of the reviews are from Toyota 4Runner owners wanting to get rid of their stock Dunlops (even a couple of FJ owners). Since Revo's are an exact match for tire size to the stock Dunlops, this adds to the review count, and since the owners are comparing these tires to the Dunlops, the reviews are glowing (what else would they be).

Revo's come in the stock 265/65 R17
BFG A/T KO's are larger at 265/70 R17
Silent Armors are also the larger size 265/70 R17

This could also be a factor when deciding on a new tire as the larger size could rub and definitely will cause speedometer/odometer errors (unless you get the system reprogrammed).

The first 100 reviews only have 7 4Runners and ONLY 1 mention Dunflops, where are you looking? I guess you guys only see and believe what you want to! I give up. You guys wouldn't know a good tire if it ran you over. :roadkill:

Well, I'll stick to my personal experience for my reply...

I live in the desert. There are sharp rocks, heat, cactus, deep gravel, rarely mud and snow.

Brand new Bridgestone Duellers left me stranded in deep gravel. Firestone's blew on me. Goodyears wore unevenly.

Multiple sets of BFG A/Ts on multiple trucks got me home every time. A few times I would go outside the next day and one would be flat, but I always got home. The sidewalls got gouged and flapped, and I've pulled 2 penny nails out, but always from home.

I'll be putting them on my T4R pretty soon. I'd rather go bigger than 265/70 but I've got to find out more about this rubbing issue with 285/70s. Burtman referred me to Cornfed who hasn't replied yet. I'll be calling them soon.

Hey Hubbard, where are you? Bet you never thought your question would ignite such a hot debate about tires.
Personally, looked at my options before buying winter tires. Tried a friends truck (not a T4R, however) with Revo's but wasn't sold on them. Ended up with BFG A/Tko because (1) BFG is a Michelin company, (2) Revo's are Bridgestone, (3) proven construction & rated as a snow tire, (4) excellent reputation and history for durability and traction.
Obviously I have a company/brand preference. Noise was a consideration because BFGs are louder but it is only for 1/4 of the year. I wouldn't and didn't get them for year-round on road use. Looks are the last consideration. I can see the appeal of the Revo's modern tread design but beauty is skin deep. The Mich tire casings are best in class. I opt back to #1, 2, 3 & 4 above.
I am very happy with them. Not sure why they have a poor wet traction stigma. I tried to break traction with them but they stick, rain or shine, snow or ice.
Get what you like. I'll sit back and enjoy the thread now.

You can fit a 265/75 w/stock suspension, no rubbing. 285's require a lift and some plastic trimming.

Well, I've got the lift. I just want to hear how much and what type of trimming. Does it need trimming to articulate or just sit there?

It's a bitch that BFG doesn't make 275/70s for 17" rims.

those are 265/75/16.. very aggressive and arent all that bad on the road..

bout to have a new facelift coming soon with arb front bumper and lift and sliders, and rear locker

Koz - I'm on your side...

All I am saying is that if you compare reviews, 8 of 80 reviews are from 4runner owners for the Revos, vs 2 of 80 reviews for the BFG A/T KO's. BFG's have had roughly the same tread design and the same triple ply sidewall for the last 20 years, so with no disrespect to tirerack, but the BFG's are a proven tire. Revo's on the other hand have only been around a few years, and have glowing reviews (nearly double the reviews of the BFG's 1926 vs 1095). Most people do not want to go through the hassle of reprogramming to account for the larger diameter tires (hence the reason I would lean towards Revos if I were not planning on a lift - see earlier post).

Off-roading through rocky trails (real rocks bigger than 8 inches), the BFG's are unstoppable and when you air down, the sidewall is so stiff that there is no chance of slipping the bead (experience on gold mining trails in Colorado with a Jeep). But whe you hit the highway in the BFG's they are not the best riding due to the triple ply sidewall (less forgiving on the bumps). And yea, you're right most of the reviews don't mention the dunlops, but what did 90% of the 4Runners (and now FJ's) come stock with, so what do you think they are replacing?

As far as the snowflake symbol, it's nice to have that reassurance, but as someone else mentioned, if they branded this tire with the snowflake, what would that do to their premium snow brand Blizzak? Even their Dueler M/T tire does not have this symbol, but this tire should eat through snow and ice without any problem.

Tirerack needs to do an AT tire comparision. This is from Consumer Reports. No KO or MTs.

Stock suspension, no rubbing:
265/75 is for 16"
265/70 is for 17"

Modified suspension, rubbing => trimming:
285/75 is for 16"
285/70 is for 17"

One is R speed rated, one is S speed rated, I believe.
