All 2010 4runners delayed to dealers until 2010

How about a Ford Exploder? It's still truck-based, isn't it? Although, I think it has 4-wheel independent suspension now.

It is still body-on-frame, but it will be replaced shortly (2010? 2011?) with a unibody vehicle. It does have an independent rear suspension, and it has poor ground clearance. Take a look at the rear suspension some time. Lots of sensitive bits that hang down low.

Fine for getting to the mall in snow, but I wouldn't want to take an Exploder offroad. YMMV.

I had forgotten all about the Xterra. I guess I was sort of turned off early on by the fact that it's looks haven't changed in a VERY long time.

Well, my G-wagen has not changed style in over 30 years and it isn't a bad vehicle!

Seriously, the Xterra is actually a very good vehicle. The interior is kinda cheap, but it is also a lot cheaper than the 4runner...so, it isn't too bad...very utilitarian vehicle. Oh yeah, the underbody of the Xterra is light years ahead of the 4runner...how Toyota has not learned how to make a clean underbody is beyond me!

The saga continues.

Just got off the phone with Rusty from Sonic Automotive Group. They are a big dealer and transhipper in the Midwest region. He confirmed the goofy Monroney issue regarding the wiring adapter for hitch connector and said that Toyota has not yet made a decision whether to re-authorize new stickers or to delay sales until the connectors are produced.

He also told me that there have some production delays on the T4R because of typhoons in Japan. Apparently, some finished vehicles were damaged on the lots and production was halted in some plants. I thought to myself, wouldn't I have heard about that if it was true?

Then I googled it. First hit:

Maybe he wants you to buy a Toyota made in America..........Go check out the 2010 Tundra 4x4 double cab with the TRD Offroad Package or TRD Rock Warrior package. The new 4.6l v8 mated with the 6 speed auto tranny makes 310hp/327ft/lb and gets ~20mpg(The engine/tranny they should have put in the new 4runner......maybe next year?)

I recently was driving on a local dealership in cincinnati, and I am 95% sure that it was a 2010 4runner sitting on the lot, so i doubt that is true. Where did you see this?

Alternatives to the 4Runner

I am sorry to hear about the delays in the 4runner delivery. This will be my first 4runner and I am very anxious to see what one is like.

I do want to offer a plug for the Xterra. I own an Xterra Offroad. It is an 07 model and is a great truck. Much more solid than the older models and has a great feel on the road (not terribly smooth, but solid). Off road it is a beast. Well powered by a 4.0 litre v-6, and a very fairly center of gravity (especially for a tall vehicle) which improves safety and versatility. If it weren't for the fact that I want a little more room, and I think it's wierd to have two of the same model cars, I would be buying another. As it now stands, I try to get the Xterra away from my son when I can. It's great fun to drive.

Your post have indicated you are on the east coast and I believe at one time you said you were on the way to California. If so, suggest you are "absolutely sure" that whatever vehicle you plan to register meets the California emissions codes. At registration time it must have the tags indicating compliance. Else wise a major PITA!

Another item to consider is California State registration taxes with respect to date of purchase and the export process from the state of original purchase (if it is a brand new vehicle). Not all states have same emissions codes, registration requirements and export policies.
All of the above were of consideration when I moved to Cal.

Think it is best that you get only first hand information, so answers to the above are up to you to research from the States themselves.
From personal experience, strongly suggest you consider purchasing in California.

You've got me worried MrTom. I think I have it figured out but will double check.

The buyer's order that I was sent does say "50 State Emissions" so I think it is okay in that regard.

I've never heard the term 'export policies' so I'll have to look into that.

Regarding CA taxes, my understanding is that I have to pay taxes on any vehicle purchased in the past 12 months regardless of where it was first titled. However, my plan now was to first title it in CA.

Guess I'll do some more digging. Thanks for the heads up!

This was a real issue when I was considering the Subaru Outback because I would have to buy a PZEV model to register it in CA and the PZEV models are scarce on the East Coast.

Not to worry just do your homework and cover all bases.
By export policy I mean it is possible that the state you purchase in may require you to register, license and pay sales tax regardless of how long you keep the vehicle in that state and possibly not get a refund on moving to another state.... It is a point of consideration that should not be overlooked.

Check with California as to the current exact specific requirements to meet their emissions standards and other requirements when registering a vehicle that has been purchased in another state.

In my case my I had a Supra that had the necessary US sticker requirements and a plate that met California requirements. Apparently all the Supras purchased in Western Canada were first imported to the US via California and then Toyota took what it need and exported them to Canada, making necessary minor mods for Canada.
So in theory it met both US and The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia requirements!!!

Well, on physical inspection,then mandatory, the inspector could not find another marking on the engine. I do not recall what he was looking for or where it was. My registration was delayed and Toyota had to be contacted to get the location. That was the first one the inspector had seen and was not familiar with all the details.

Yours could very well be the first '10 4Runner brought in from out of state.

That's why I suggest you seriously consider purchasing in California...

They've been selling them here. 2wd only of course though...no 4wd's until next month (or so I've been told). Unless the salesman has been BSing me and the models I've been looking at were all the same vehicles (I've visited a few times and am pretty sure that I've been looking at different vehicles each time, plus my sales guy is pretty straight-up).

The Monroney Stickers here are printed by our local dealer. Looks like a regular window sticker, except they have our local dealer network background and logo on them (Servco Toyota Hawaii).

I could be wrong, but I definitely know the window stickers don't look like those found on any other local dealer's vehicle windows. (Servco has a lock on the local Toyota market...I think they own all but two --maybe three toyota lots in the state.) No biggie though...they're pretty fair and reasonable in price. I've compared their price with SoCal dealer's online price and they're pretty close.

SET sucks...

That screen is the system wide SET inventory screen, and is only saying that SET (Southeast Toyota Distributors aka JM Family) has the vehicles somewhere in their allocation. They may be sitting at the "port" in Commerce GA, but that doesn't mean they are actually available or even will be available on the dates listed. When it lists vehicles as available "Immediately", and it includes a full VIN, then you can tell the vehicle is actually on the dealer's lot. Usually.

SET is a real pain to buy from - they don't offer all of the factory options, and often substitute lower quality "port" options for Toyota factory offerings. And of course, their inventory listing won't tell you where a vehicle is located, so you have to look up each dealer one at a time until you find the one with the full VIN.

Actually, here is a screen cap of the inventory from just over a week ago.

Again, why the fcuk is Toyota making it so difficult to take my money? It's like they don't want these trucks to sell very well or something.

That's good to hear cause the only reason I choose the Xterra over the 4Runner is that the Xterra has a manual transmission. Otherwise, I'd be looking at the 5th gen 4Runner Trail all the way.
