another blacked out headlight thread...DIY lots of pics.

Im about to try this tomorrow and was wondering, can I use Black Valspar Gloss interior/exterior spray paint? Seems pretty simple! Get the light out, heat it so it comes apart, paint, then put back together!

im sure that would work. as long as it will adhere to the plastic/chrome inside of the headlight housing. i dont remember what i used but i dont re-call it being glossy. mines more flat or semi-gloss

its super easy. just time consuming. set aside a few hours
 
What about plasti-dip? Has anybody tried using plasti-dip to do this black-out mod? I did my emblems the other day and still have an extra can...
 
I tried this but had no luck. Maybe its just how the repair shop put my bumper back together after I crashed but i unscrewed the bolts followed step by step and headlight wouldnt come out ;/ the part under the headlight that 'latches' on and off is now stuck inward lol. not to noticible though :roadkill:
 
yes :/ im going to try again next week! I love how it looks with the inside black.. so its a must do! i had trouble getting that black protective piece off.. everytime i poped off a cap a peice snapped on it! ha:hiding:
 
im ready to do mine, im just super torn with which direction i want to go... painting mine white to match or black to contrast. i know that chrome is kinda irritating me so im ready to change it.

any thoughts or input?

Go with the black. I've seen a couple white 4runners with the blacked out headlights on here and they look awesome. Maybe some pics of your existing setup would help you get a definitive answer, though.
 
We should get some more silver blackout mod pictures . What did everyone use for re sealant?

i wonder if having an HID/projector set up would and should call for a high temp paint for blacking these out? i have flat black duplicolor wheel paint which states its resistant to high temps, but doesnt give a number. How hot should the paint be able to withstand???
 
the headlight housing doesnt get too hot so i dont think high temp is needed. plus most HID kits and headlights are air cooled anyway. while youre driving they are keeping cool
 
How secure is just using the original sealant, my biggest concern is moisture/leaks.... starting with new clear silicone sealant isn't necessary?

nah. the silicon is durable. you can re-use the factory stuff.

Wondering what this would look like with HIDs. Anyone know any members with blacked out headlights and HIDs?
