another friendly reminder to get a dash cam

Pretty close to what I'm going through right now. I rear ended a guy and his girlfriend last July. Someone in front of them jammed on the brakes at the last second in order to make a turn. I actually heard the tires screeching, which is what got my attention. I stood up on the brakes, but it was too late. I was probably doing 15 mph when I hit them in my Jeep SRT8. It pushed the bumper of the car in, but only put 2 L shaped cuts into my plastic bumper. I pulled over and jumped out and asked if they were okay. The guy had been driving, got out and walked over to the passenger side where I was talking to his g/f. I asked them repeatedly if they wanted me to call an ambulance, and they said no...there was no need. I asked them if they wanted me to call the cops...same response. After swapping info with them and repeatedly asking if they were okay, I told them I guess I was going to go, since I was running late for a family function. They agreed and I apologized again. About 2 hours later, I get a call from the lady. She said the State Trooper needed to talk to me. I asked, what State Trooper...and she said one stopped by and just needed some info from me. I was only 2 miles away from the Troop Station, so I just dropped by. So apparently they called the State Trooper after I left and told them they had been in an accident, but I just left. They are both suing me, claiming neck injury. This happened 4th of July weekend, and it still hasn't been settled. The State Trooper ended up giving me a Careless Operation ticket from this. When I asked why, he informed me that the lady that was "driving" was worried about my insurance. I told them that the guy had been driving, to which he replied, well they said she was driving because he didn't have a license. So, long story short...they wanted to make up some bullshit story about being injured, but couldn't do it while I was there because the guy would've gotten in trouble for driving without a license. The damage is hard to see in the pics, so tell me how anyone could have been hurt from it?

I had a very similar scenario occur with me in high school, and boy did I get a learning lesson from that, even though it was not my fault. We had to hire a lawyer, make a case, and go to court. Yep, good times. I wish I had a dash cam then to prove I didn't screw up, but it happened 11 years ago and dash cams were non-existent, well in the US anyway.

I'm curious about your situation now. Did you ever get it resolved?

I just recently ordered the owl car cam.. kind of pricey but I’m really impressed by the unit. My daughter was involved in an accident and it took me 1 1/2 years to get it straightened out.. people were suing us for a bunch of BS..I’m sold on dash cams from here on out.

It happened on 4th of July last year, and it still hasn't been settled. They finally agreed on a price for their car. It was an older Hyundai Accent. Judging from the creases and rust on both of the bottom quarter panels right after I hit them...it had been wrecked previously. I spoke with my insurance adjuster last month and they are still fighting over a price to pay them for their "injury" claim/settlement.

It's a little hard to see in the dark, but here is a pic of the damage my SRT8 sustained from that wreck. It was only the plastic bumper cover. The hood, grill, headlights, foglights, and both fenders didn't have a scratch on them. Yet...their car was totaled.

Just realized that I had already posted that pic. Oh well...here is a zoomed in version for you! I'm sure they went out and hired some local, automobile settlement attorney. I'm just curious if the attorney has the ability to see my policy limits. I have to carry a million dollar umbrella on all 3 of my vehicles due to work. If he knows, it would certainly make sense as to why this is dragging on as long as it has.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if their attorney can pull up your insurance policy, including the limits. Man, what a bunch of sketch vultures you're dealing with.

And yeah, with your plastic bumper barely pushed in, it's hard to imagine any injuries were sustained on either end. I bet your airbags didn't go off.
I'm sure Karma has a nice plan for them.

Airbags didn't go off in either car. Only time will tell.

Do they make dash cams with some kind of gps tracking system in them so that if your vehicle was ever stolen you can track it down? I’ve been thinking of getting a dash cam but if there existed an all-in-one system like this I would be very interested in it.

Damn that sucks OP, but it's great that you have that proof at least. I swear some people just assume since we drive older trucks we must be broke shitbags they can walk all over. The amount of tailgating and shenanigans I get when driving my 4R compared to my shiny/fast 2016 Golf R is ridiculous.

To the others shopping, you don't necessarily need a rear facing one. One forward is usually good enough since it'll show you maintaining your lane, or stopped and getting impacted from behind (that's what she said?). Rear facing would be good in a hit and run situation I guess?

I have a Garmin that's decent enough, but even those cheap Anker ones get good reviews. Just all depends on what you need and want to spend, but I wouldn't belabor it by comparing until the cows come hone. Just get one sooner than later because you never know!

Sucked it up. Picked up a Garmin 45 from Best Buy. $150. Along with their hardwire kit. Great dash cam. Detects red lights, collision warning, lane departure, impact sensor and more. And what’s nice about it. It’s small, has a viewing screen. and records WHILE PARKED with engine off.

Get a Dash cam! is all I can say. I have one in my 4Runner but I bought another car and hadn't installed a dash cam yet. Got a ticketed for going 96mph in a Prius C ??. Trooper said radar clocked me going that fast. I was on cruise control set at 78 mph (it was an 80 mph zone). If I had had a dash cam I could have fought the ticket.
Get a free one for your cell phone, go to the app store and download one. I use Daily Roads Voyager. It tracks GPS and speed. I even installed it on my old phone that doesn't have a service plan and it still works.
On my working phone I can quickly upload the video segments to my DropBox or Google drive.

I bought one a month or so ago. No incidents yet, but definitely gives me some peace of mind. Impact detection and parking lot sensor capabilities. Think I paid $70 on Amazon

OldShark 3" 1080p Image is fantastic.

Got mine in April. It’s a start up company and they were/are having a best video of the day contest..anyway I won, so the camera paid for itself and then some.. I like the quality of the camera and am very pleased with it. We have the worst drivers here in South Florida! It records inside the vehicle also. You can turn that option off in case you might be doing something you would rather not have recorded..[emoji481] Here’s my winning video. I have no affiliation with this company by the way.
