Another Full-Length Roof Rack Option -PrinSu

I mounted a Tepui Ayer Sky 2 on my 3/4 rack. It was a royal pain in the a$$ getting it bolted on due to limited clearance between the crossbars and roof. Next time I will be attaching two Prinsu crossbars on the RTT first then setting it on top of the roof rack. The mounting bolts that come with these tents are too long as well. It'll contact the roof so I took an angle grinder and shortened them to 55mm. The other option is get some spacers.

You really only have 49" length wise (front to back) to work with on the 3/4 so tents like the CVT Mt. Bachelor, Tepui Ayer Series or anything with a closed dimension of 48" x 42-48" would fit on the rack without issue. I had a Smittybilt Overlander RTT which measured roughly 56"x48" which stuck out past the rear of the rack. Since I have the Gobi ladder anytime I tried opening the lift gate the top of the ladder would hit the RTT preventing the gate to fully open.

Here is a photo that HeartGuy posted of another 3/4 with an RTT. You can clearly see that he is using some additional legs to raise the tent. You get more wiggle room to attach the mounting bolts.

I had to shorten the supplied bolts. Front bolts wouldn't clear the roof. I will replace with shorter bolts next time.

This pic was super helpful for me, thanks! I have a set of spare bars and was just wondering if there were any issues using them in the longer slots for mounting my tent. Plan was to put the bars on the tent first so I could clearance the bolts, and then drop it into a spot between the existing bars on the rack.

FYI to all - I ordered a Prinsu rack around the beginning of Feb (2018) and received it in like 3 weeks - I would say that CBI seems to have helped sorting out the delays people were experiencing last year.

I'm sure they will work with the prinsu crossbars but $300 is pricey. I'd spend only an extra 5 minutes getting on and it off the way it is set up now.

Out of curiosity I just grabbed a tape measure and went out and measured the width of my crossbars and the space between them. The crossbars are exactly 2” and the gap between them is exactly 8”. Then I grabbed an extra crossbar and held it up there and realized you can’t put a screw in the crossbar to hold it level so to make a solid floor using crossbars, you would need to make some metal shims to go in the channels to keep some of the bars from twisting. Either that or order two 3” bars and one 2” bar to go in the middle to fill the 8” gap which should work perfectly. You would need to notch out a crossbar for the shark fin antenna too. At least in theory, you could make it perfectly flat.

I don't feel like I need to tighten the mounting hardware even tighter to the crossbars cause I got it pretty snug. Any thoughts?

On the Prinsu site, you can get risers that I am thinking could work well with a tent to avoid this weird noise. But also don't want to spend $120 for four...

I got tired of having to remove my awning every time I added, removed, or moved something on my Prinsu rack. So I took all of the cross bars to a local machine shop and had them mill access holes to drop in or remove carriage bolts.

Other folks who have done this had all four in a row, but that seemed to me like it would weaken the bar, especially right on center. So I had mine staggered and offset one inch either side of center. There are no access holes on the bottom. This ought to make it easier to work with!

I don't know. I asked them to use whatever end mill they had that was barely larger than the head of the carriage bolts I'm using, which are .580" OD. And I can't get to my calipers that measure ID.

You would want them to fit whatever carriage bolts *you* are using, anyway. Not what fits mine.

I had mine milled with an .600 mill. I haven't run across a 1/4" carriage bolt that won't fit yet.
