Antenna Removal

Mine is doing the same thing (power motor makes obnoxious noise). My antenna looks just fine (not bent or damaged). Can I just unplug the motor and leave the Antenna in the extended position permanently? Or will unplugging the power to the motor also effect the antenna's reception ability?

None Power Antenna for a '98 4-Runner

Hello Folks,

This is my first post. I am on my third power antena replacement for a '98 4-Runner. I ain't going to do it again. I want a simple durable antenna.

I am hoping to hear from you all that I don't have to pull the radio out and tune it to a universal antenna, like the old days.

Please recommend an antenna for 4X4'ng. I don't need anything fancy.

I have the stock '98 AM/FM/Cassette system. All I need is good FM reception locally.

I have no problem pulling the fender well out. I can defeat the power line to the antenna motor there. Is there an easy way to get at the motor relay for the radio under the dash? Do I need to mess with the relay? My concern is the battery drain.

FYI- I am pretty good at trouble shooting '81 and '82 4X4 Pickups. I still have mine. I bought it in Nov '81 and unfortunately use it to go to work every day, instead of getting into the boonies. I know I know more about that vintage truck than the experts at Toyota. I have no problem trying to answer questions on that great vehicle!
