Anti-theft system upgrade anyone?

Hi tech team,

Has anyone here installed any additional or supplemental Anti-theft Security System equipment in your 5'th gen 4R? When I had my 3'rd gen 4Runner SR5, I never usually worried about the truck getting stolen or broken into when near home. It came equipt with the engine immobilizer, door/hood breach sensors, and a Glass Breakage Sensor Alarm; which could be adjusted for a variety of ambient sound level environments. But ever since I bought the one I have now, I've sometimes wondered (not being able to see it from the apt.) if it was ever being tampered with e.g., via broken glass, or a 'Flat-bed Hijack' heist. :spy:

Maybe some of you have had some of those same thoughts or concerns and went a step further than what Toyota provided, and added an extra measure of security to the existing system, or... just ripped the oem system completely out and installed an entirely new, High-tech security system. Tomorrow, Fri 8-21, the wife is getting a 'Remote-start System' in her Camery... and I was thinking maybe to get one too, or at least a security system upgrade for the 4Runner. I have. I had to put one in as a requirement for my insurance on my photography gear. I went with the CompuStar system and have been VERY happy with it. Forum member [MENTION=93434]gshadow325[/MENTION] is the guru here, and definitely guided me through it several months back. In the past I owned a Viper system on my FJ Cruiser. It worked but is not in the same league with this one in my 4Runner.

I also went with a full Compustar alarm and remote start. I purchased it through [MENTION=93434]gshadow325[/MENTION] and installed it myself. The most useful thing is the Drone Mobile. I can lock, unlock, start, and check on it from anywhere. You can set it to get as many or as little notifications as you like. I was also a DEI (Clifford, Avital) person at one point but I highly recommend Compustar now.

Does compustar change the locks to a timed rolling code to avoid that new jack people are using to gain entry?

After my right rear door window was broken I decided to go with an aftermarket system. They broke into my T4R at night and got away with some cool stuff like my Grohmann belt knife, a pair of binoculars that were from my grandfather, some spanners, .40 S&W ammo, etc.

I went with the Viper 5906V Amazon.com : Viper 5906V Color Remote Start & Security : Electronics
I got a return for $175 and install was $39 purchased through Amazon. I also installed the glass break and tilt sensors. Everything altogether ran me less than $300.

An alarm is not going to stop anyone intent on stealing your goods from your 4R. It may be annoyingly loud enough to make them miss an item or two, but they are still going to break in and get your stuff.

So sorry to hear about the break-in, and the loss of your grandfather's binoculars that were given to you... I've lost a lot of stuff 'through moving' that were my mom's so I understand the impact of losing those personal things! ...And thanks for your post! Best!

I agree. I live in an area where break-ins are inevitable, so I've just learned to not leave anything out in view. I think it's really the best strategy. I feel like just having an alarm deters people a good amount too.

My friend's wife leaves tons of crap in her car, like trash, water bottles, empty grocery bags, and their car gets broken into all the time.

I leave my car spotless on the inside, and it's only been hit once. According to the officer "Your car looks nice, so they probably just figured you had nice things in there." Which I did, but I don't want to drive anywhere without a few tools on hand.
