Hahah, Not sure the extra grip/tire would have helped that situation, but maybe. It's hard to say. I still have a lot of life left in my Duractracs unfortunately so it's going to be awhile for me.

I am feeling the same way, I am leaning towards the 255/75/17s though since I am going to have a very minimal lift.
The only thing I can't decide on is if I want to just go with a standard loaded tire like an AT3 or Yokohama Geolanders to save money. I live in Colorado, and go dirt road driving for camping and plan to start doing some easy/moderate 4x4 trails. Any opinions?

Dpending on which tire in 285/70-17 i ordered a set of 265/70-17 and i put them on a scale and it was in the mid 50's heavier then my AT II which are around high 40's. My next set of tires i will be trying these also. Since duratrac dont come in 255/80-17

I am assuming you have somewhere around a3/2 lift to get them to fit with very little rubbing?

I am still having my current tire debate we all I am sure have had at some point. I am probably only going to go with a 255/75/17 since my lift will basically be similar to a daystar 2.5/1.5 but I am doing it with FJ springs and budget booster lifts from daystar.
I have been recommended the Duratracs over and over again, but then just read the sidewall/handling issues. I really want to get the ST Maxx, but everyone I have talked to at Discount or coworkers claim they may just be too heavy and truly a Mud Tire rather than an AT and I will hate the road noise. Have you noticed any crazy amounts of road noise and do they handle like an AT?
My third option was the Hankooks but the getting louder over time definitely has scared me away from them. Any review from you would be helpful, or anyone else on this thread.

Whoever you're talking to is flat out lying, or uninformed about the St Maxx tires. The quietness is their selling point. They are just as quiet as the factory tires. You should read some reviews of these tires, once you do you'll buy. Every. Single. Review... talks about how these tires are super quiet and perform exceptionally. 4xoverland talked about them being the only tires they use now, after running BFG for 15 years. Being a 255, weight is a non issue. These are slightly more aggressive than the BFG but nowhere near as aggressive as a MT tire. I read about 10 professional reviews before buying.
I suggest you do too.

I think you may have just sold me on them. I have read reviews over and over again and the only negative thing I have seen is that they are definitely more aggressive and the reviewers were looking for more of the Yokohama or atp tread type. Plus I can get them in load range c which makes me feel more comfortable when I haul my pop up.
I am sure any tire would work for the mild off roading I plan to do since I am just upgrading to bilstein shocks. But I definitely like the reviews and looks of them.

I dont have the Stt maxx on my 4runner YET, but my father has them on his 02 suburban 2500, which has seen its fair share of different kinds of AT tires.. and they are by the best the best tires in every aspect so far.
The duratracs have an exceptional tread design for snow and decent offroad, with that said they are built poorly, have a terrible sidewall and I have seen them fail and puncture on friends rigs more often then should be allowed.

Yes, Bought these tires, coming from 285/75/17 ridge grapplers, and in this size 255/85/17 mounted on SEMA edition TRD pro wheels. I only have some around-town mileage on them so far, and a 1200+ mile road trip coming up next week with offroading thrown in there.
From a very short-term perspective, they seem like an excellent tire, smooth, quiet considering how aggressive they are, and look great. That's all I can comment on at this time.

How will fitting 255/85 compare to something like 285/70 or 285/75? I have a Dobinsons lift going on this winter as well as SuperPro LCAs, already have JBA UCAs on. Assuming BMC is still required.
