Anybody tell me how to open up my map lights to change the bulb?

As the title states, can anybody tell me how to open up my map lights to change the bulb?

I've got some LED panels to go in there, but can't figure out how to open them.......

I used a small flat head screwdriver. There are 2 small gaps toward the front of the car you put the flat head into and pop it out. Right on the edge of the clear lens.

screw driver but you have to do it a certain way.

the pressure point is directly on the face of the map light but on the glass windshield side. you should be able to apply pressure and it will pop off VERY EASILY. However if you try from any of the other sides it might not work.

Just did this to my 98 over the weekend. I don't think the light covers themselves pop out on a 98 (maybe they do on later models). Or, if they do pop out, I couldn't figure out how to do it.

I had to take the whole casing/module off. Just run a flat-head screwdriver between the module and the roof liner. The whole thing pops right off easily with just a little bit of pressure. The tabs are about 1/4 of the way in on each side (don't worry, you'll find them pretty easily). Replace both lights and you're done. Takes about 5 minutes.

They are super bright, and come with adapters for several different styles, and are super cheap. I bought a couple different styles of these for my map lights and overhead lights, and they put out alot of light. They may be low quality, but for the price, who cares if they go out in a couple years.

Yeah, my maplight area doesn't look anything like that. It's the smaller version with the holder that holds a little bit more than a credit card. I'm away from my car right now, or I'd post a picture. What year is your console there?

That's a field monitor from a Hilux Surf pictured, yours won't look anything like that, but it should open up to access the bulbs the same way.

same way i did mine. looked for the smallest flat head i could find in my garage. be careful not to damage the plastics around the lens!! those gaps up front is where they pop in/out.

easiest way to find the bulb size, take it out and take it into the place that sells the LED ones and match up the size. at least, thats what i did.

changed the map lights, dome, and rear. soooo bright! theyre polarity sensitive so if it doesnt work the first time, put the LED's the other way.

Mine didn't look like that when I got it. I had the sunglasses holder (sounds like you have the same thing). The cover is exactly the same except that the buttons are different. That is actually my stock cover moved over to the field monitor unit.

The bulb guide shows a DE3175 bulb #. This is the bulb for the dome light, not the map light.

The map light has a small round type bulb which you turn to lock in.

The type of bulb that you require, will be based on which year and model of 4Runner you have.

You must tell us what year your 4Runner is, and we may be able to help.

I can tell you that my 98 4Runner Map lights and Dome lights all used the same kind of bulb. It was a tube type bulb, with pointy metal ends on them.

The 2 pointy ends are contact points, and simply slide into tabs on either side of the fixture.

I ordered some panel LED'S that have an adapter which fit in the bulb socket.

They look like this:

Is that how you did that? I assumed you painted the plastic, and I was going to say you did a very nice job of color matching, lol.

I did paint the FMU case, and yeah, the paint match came out extremely close to the stock color. All the info in the link in my sig. I moved the clear cover and my window control electronics over from my stock control panel and put it into the FMU case. The FMU came with the old design, which had a separate button for tilt and slide. The cover and electronics are interchangeable though, so all of them should pop off the same.

That is what I had too, the festoon style. That is the 48 LED panel which is too big for the maps lights, but works great for the overhead lights in the middle and rear. Those things put out TONS of light. I put one in the cargo area, but left the stock bulb over the back seat as I didn't want to blind myself or passengers every time the door was opened.

I've got an '02 4Runner. My map lights are the exact same as pictured in that thread. I'm running a "screw in" type LED bulb. To be exact, they're labeled as - HID 6K White LED bulbs. Type of bulb is Ba9s.
