That article sources from Facebook posts lol. The degree of misinformation is impressive.
Obama’s state dept estimated 4K construction jobs which you’re calling temporary, plus 16k ongoing jobs directly related to the pipeline and a total of 42k jobs where most are indirectly tied to the pipeline but created due to increased economic activity brought by the project.
Obama downplays Keystone, ignores State Department research on pipeline - Washington Times
The article I linked mentions Facebook posts saying that between 11,000 and 83,000 jobs were going to be lost, which a lot of people are crowing about. The authors attempted to verify this and could not.
What TransContinental will *estimate* is that about 10,400 temporary US jobs *would have* been created and 2,800 Canadian jobs. These are construction, not full time jobs. What they do confirm is that the Biden order stopped work for about 1000 jobs right now. And the US State Dept estimates 50 jobs would have been permanent, with some of them in Canada.
That Washington Times article you linked is from the *Obama* administration’s State Dept estimates from over 5 years ago. It’s pretty old information and pretty optimistic for job creation. For example it says in addition to the *16,000* it estimates for temporary construction jobs,
“Another 26,000 jobs would come as an “indirect” result of Keystone. Those jobs would include, for example, retail and service positions in areas around the construction zone.” What? Who would build stores, restaurants, hotels, etc that would have customers for only two years? Even if that were to happen, that infrastructure would also be temporary.
Look, I’m not anti oil. I’ve thought for years that the Keystone XL ought to be built as long as the safety and land use issues could be resolved. There already is a pipeline from Canada to the US, this one would mirror some of that and send more oil each day. Canada is going to sell tar sands oil to someone, why not us? Otherwise it will go overseas.
But what I don’t believe are these stories of massive jobs “lost”. They are highly inflated to stir up emotions.
