Anyone get way worse MPG on the highway?

2014 TE. 100% stock.

I'm averaging about 16.5mpg in 50/50 driving (And not even getting on it.)
So I did some experimenting:

55mph: 19.5mpg
60mph: under 19mpg
65mph: 17mpg
70mph: 16mpg (About 2000 rpm)
70+ forget it.

The truck IS shifting into 5th.

Lucky for me, about 20% of my 25 mile commute is a surface street with a 55mph speed limit.

I keep ALL my records, my summer driving was 16.8 mpg on average.
I had one 18mpg record, when I took an all highway road trip.

Of course, the truck was brand new in the summer. Break in + getting a feel for it may have artificially deflated the MPG numbers.

Running 75-80 my 5th gen gets 17.5 mpg which I don't think is too bad considering it is lifted with BFG ATs on there. Have you checked your tire pressure and alignment?

even if the "instant" mpg isn't accurate, it's still a good comparison. Mine sits just under 20mpg at 75, yet over 30mpg at 45. But when you sit idle at lights it makes it sort of a wash. Luckily for me I have a lot of roads that are 45mph and long distances between lights. I probably average my interstate mpg. It is normal for all vehicles to get it's best gas mileage at lower speeds, the reason why city driving is listed lower is because of the amount of time spent idling.

In order to accurately trend what your vehicle is really doing efficiency-wise, you have to use a moving average to take all the outliers (highs and lows for whatever reason) out of the equation. What you have left is a nice smooth trend. If you have your numbers in a spreadsheet send them to me (pm me and I will give you an address) and I will do it for you.

The chances are high that your graph will look like the one I did for Andy though!

All the speeds you listed would be considered highway. City mileage won't beat highway all things considered, though there is a sweet spot above which driving a brick really fast will cause bad mileage.

It's a brick. Driving with a tail wind or up in the mountains really helps.

I got better mpg climbing in the mountains than I did on flat hwy at 75mph last summer. I also had my roof rack loaded up, so it was horrible ~15 on the hwy. I was getting 17 around town at the time.

less wind resistance and rpms @ 55, as you go faster the more air you have to push out of the way with the brick that you drive and more rpms to keep you pushing thru that air.

also if you stomp that pedal a few times, a 1/4 of tank goes by pretty dam fast

Yeah it seems most bigger vehicles are more sensitive to highway mileage (wind, hills etc) vs expected or stated mileage. If it's windy I have a tough time getting better than 17.5 mpg. I rarely get above 18 but I have got at good as 20mpg at 75-80mph.

the warden's last tank in her 12 Tacoma was 8.2, tank before 11.4, and before that was 12.5

now granted she has been using the remote start a lot but that's the price you pay for a truck + negative temps and remote start.

mine hasn't been any better, last tank was 13.3, before that was 12.6 and same scenario as the warden, cold + remote start.

that is about right. 50MPH is about the best fuel economy you'll get in this kind of vehicle. Going 120 KM/H (75 MPH), I get a bit under 20MPG on an average american road at 80 deg f, as far as I know. A little bit better and a lot less, depending on the conditions.

2010 TE stock size Wild Peak tires , sliders.

13 MPG combined city / freeway in SoCal mostly flat few small hills.

The motor is gutless so you have to bury the loud pedal.

Costco regular gas.

Freeway average speeds in my area are 85mph , the brick drinks fuel at 90 plus.

2015 trail here and got 20.2 mpg today & near 22 mph last fill up. I live near Houston so it's about 60 degrees today & 3/4 easy city driving. It's doable with some effort.

15 tep. Ive been getting 20-22 highway at 85ish (our highways are posted 80mph). 17 around town. Pretty much spot on the EPA. Stock size wrangler ats tires. My first tank new on the highway it was -20f and snowy and at 45mph I got 23.9 tank average. Probably won't see that again.

had mine for almost exactly 12 months -averages 17.6 mpg in 50:50 mix of highway and city - seems pretty normal.

25-40 = 16-20MPG

40-50MPH = 22-23MPG

50-65 = 20-21MPG

65-70 = 19MPG

70-85 = 16-18 MPG

The only mods on my SR5 are a Borla Exhaust. Still have a speedo error of +3 at 70MPH. Once I correct that, I may see 24/25MPGs. =D Haven't measured actual MPG's yet.
