Anyone have their steering ever quit working?

Just driving around a corner just now I felt a tug and tge steering went unresponsive. I parked figuring it was a tiered of something letting go. I inspected the suspension and found nothing out of the ordinary. I started the motor back up and everything was back to normal.

Thoughts?

Unresponsive as to how? Like power steering quit, wheel would spin in hands with no steering, steering locked up, etc.

I'd check in this order: power steering pump, steering shaft, steering rack. Did you give the power steering fluid level a check?

More info would be helpful.... If the power steering goes out you will still be able to turn the wheels, it will just be much harder to do so. If something became disconnected, I don't think a simple restart would solve the issue.

It was weird. After making the thread I realized that it was the 4th Gen that had the drive by wire and 5th Gens went back to normal.

Regardless I think I did mess something up in the suspension but I'll be damned if I can see where it's at. It's rubbing on the control arm now.

mine certainly has a power steering pump. im not sure what you mean by that.

anyway, the tire is rubbing? so did you hit something then?

Not recently. I was offroading a few weeks ago. Might have finally given up the ghost. I'll get it checked out tomorrow.

Did you check your tie rods? Not that hard to bend one on the trails if you hit something just right. See if the toe on your alignment looks ok too. I hit a rock once and it spun the alignment cams and threw the toe out.

You've been towing that Corvette around again, haven't you?

I got married and traded the Corvette out for a Yukon XL which was subsequently traded out for a Ford Explorer Sport.

But thanks for paying attention to my life so closely.

Ryan's corvette life..... one big sink hole :fencing: :rapture:

(either that.. or it's the hole he hit trying to pull one out that messed up his steering...)

Okki

Nothing in his bantering makes sense. Is there an issue? Kind of sounds like someone on drugs. lol. Cannot keep thoughts on one track...

Found it - I was looking at tie rods earlier. Didn't think to look up. The rod that pins the upper control arm in place - the bolt backed off completely and the rod had pulled up and into the engine bay. Dealer will address and do the alignment tomorrow AM.

Holy shit make sure you don't drive it till it's fixed!!! Have it towed or jack it up yourself and shove the bolt back through and get a nut on there! Isn't that one bolt all the way through holding both sides of your upper control arm on? That looks to be an OEM arm... Did that get removed for some reason when they put on your spacer lift?

It's at dealership now. Had I realized it before I definitely wouldn't have driven it to dealership
